Alternative Text - eText Guide

Dear Student,
Welcome to the University of South Florida and to the Students with Disabilities Services (SDS)
office. As the Assistive Technologies Services Coordinator, it is my mission to provide you with
appropriate adaptive technologies. One of the services that SDS provides to students with a
disability that significantly affects their reading is access to electronic text materials. To receive
these materials the student must be enrolled with SDS and have a significant vision, physical, or
learning disability.
The materials in this packet are provided to assist you in obtaining electronic text materials.
Time is of the essence when it comes to obtaining e-text; every means for obtaining e-text
materials takes upwards of 4 weeks to complete to ensure your e-textbooks are ready. I
strongly encourage you to order your books as early as possible and to confirm your class
schedules a minimum of one-month prior to the start of the semester. Please do not wait until
classes begin to order you course textbooks. Instead, visit the USF Bookstore and ask about
required books, email your professors to find out what textbooks will be used, and speak with
applicable department office managers for the courses that you are taking.
I look forward to assisting you with your electronic text material requests during your
educational program at USF.
Best regards,
Robert E. Kindya, MBA

Procedures for Purchasing Course Textbooks in Electronic Format
Students should first attempt to purchase textbooks in electronic format directly from the USF
Bookstore. Todd Urbanski, USF Textbooks Manager, will work with the publisher to order the
electronic textbook materials if they are available.
There are many ways to purchase electronic materials. For efficiency, SDS recommends the
following:
1. Students visit the USF Bookstore and rent/purchase course textbooks. Once textbooks
are purchased, request electronic versions from the bookstore manager Mr. Urbanski. If
the electronic versions are available the publisher will email them to SDS for processing.
Students need to submit an Electronic Text Materials Request form along with proof of
purchase to SDS prior to receiving electronic textbooks.
---OR--2. Students rent/purchase textbooks from the USF Bookstore and deliver them to SDS for
cutting, scanning, and comb binding. A completed Electronic Text Materials Request
form and proof of purchase must be submitted to SDS before processing begins. This
process may take up to 4 weeks.
Book rentals from the USF Bookstore can be cut and scanned and the USF Bookstore will
accept the book back at the end of the semester per your rental agreement. SDS is not
responsible for any fees incurred from books rented and cut for scanning from other
rental sources such as Amazon or off-campus bookstores; cutting rentals from
alternative sources will void your rental agreement and may result in additional fees
from the rental source.
---OR--3. Students obtain memberships to Learning Ally and order text from them. Learning Ally
offers need based memberships to qualifying students with approved application (see
Alternative eText Sources for listing of other e-text sources).
Please visit the Cashiers Office in Student Services room SVC 1039 if you are told you are not on
the list for textbooks by the bookstore manager and you are on a VOCREHAB, VA, or receive
other financial scholarships that pay for your textbooks.
