Yak’s Corner Favorite Book
Character Contest Winners
The Yak has
stayed up many a
night reading a fresh
“Harry Potter”
book. And he’s
read and read
aloud some of
the favorite
books from
Michigan
authors, like “Bud,
Not Buddy” by Christopher Paul Curtis.
His favorite character? Bud comes to
mind, Hermione, and also a smart classic
detective called Nancy Drew and even a
wild crazy toad from the classic “Wind in the
Willows.”
You have some of those same characters
as your favorites, too, and you’ve introduced
the Yak to many more in the annual Yak’s
Corner Favorite Book Character Contest.
Once again, more than 1,500 of you shared
with the Yak drawings of your favorite book
characters – from Clifford the Big Red Dog
and Captain Underpants to Harry Potter. A
lot of you continue to love Dr. Seuss, “The
Hunger Games” series and also books
on animals from “Pete the Cat” to the
“Warriors” series.
You wrote about what made a book
character special. Megan Cindric, a firstplace winner from Larson Middle School in
Troy, loves Firepaw, from “Warriors Book 1,
Into the Wild” by Erin Hunter. Wrote Megan,
“My favorite character trait of Firepaw’s is
his wisdom, with his brain power he can get
out of practically any situation and ends up
saving his clan multiple times.”
Or maybe you like a character
for a different reason like Farrah
Malachi Bieniek, 2nd grade, Troy, drew Moose in “If you Give A Moose A Muffin”
by Laura Joffe.
Ardwin, a first-place winner from Addams
Elementary School in Royal Oak, who likes
Bad Kitty in “Bad Kitty Gets a Bath” by Nick
Bruel, because “She is a Smarty pants!”
We’re publishing the artwork of the
first-place winners today. For the rest of the
winners’ list, check out www.dnie.com and
click on “Student Contests.” It’s a chance
to see a good reading list. And remember, if
you’re a reader, you ARE a winner. Although
Michigan celebrates great reads in March,
diving into a new book is a year-round ticket
to adventure. Keep reading, writing and
yakking!
