ABOUT
ITALIAN
DAY
Now into its sixth year since its return in
2010, Italian Day on The Drive represents
the celebration of Italian culture and the
contributions made to Vancouver by
Italian immigrants and their children.
Italian Day on The Drive is a vibrant cultural
street festival spanning 13 blocks and shares
all that is Italian in a day-long celebration with
Vancouver’s diverse and multi-cultural
community. Held annually on Commercial
Drive (‘The Drive’), the district represents a
rich history of over 50 years of Italian
heritage and is synonymously recognized as
Vancouver’s original ‘Little Italy‘, making it the
ideal event venue. Highlighting a unique
theme each year, consistent elements remain
at the heart of the festivities and bring
together Vancouver’s community via the
common affection of Italian culture, its
history, worldwide and local influence. Like
a piazza in full swing in a sea of green, white
and red, the street comes alive with food,
music, dancing, product exhibits and
activities.
The event is organized by the Italian Day
Festival Society in conjunction with The
Commercial Drive Business Society and
collaborating partner, The Italian Cultural
Centre (Il Centro); and is dependent upon the
invaluable support of our sponsors, community businesses and the City of Vancouver
without whom the event would not be possible. Each year the event grows, along with
attendance numbers, participating business
revenues, media coverage and an overwhelmingly positive event perception. With over
350,000 estimated attendees in 2014, Italian
Day on The Drive has become Vancouver’s
largest and most celebrated cultural street
festival of its kind. With this in mind, it is with
gratitude and enthusiasm that we extend this
sponsorship invitation to join us for next
year’s Italian Day on The Drive set for Sunday,
June 14 2015.
2015 THEME
ART
Thoughtfully chosen - each year’s theme
considers the Italian culture and how it
relates to our community and businesses both Italo-Canadian and other. This year we
weave a common thread which binds the
essence of the Italian culture and its impact
worldwide and locally, namely - Italian ART:
architecture, painting, sculpture, music,
cinema, performance, literature, design
and culinary art.
Italy has been at the forefront of western
civilization for over 2,000 years and has had a
profound influence on the development of
Europe and the rest of the world in almost
every aspect of art and culture: the birthplace
of Opera, music writing and ballet; the home
to the world’s greatest number of UNESCO
World Heritage sites and over half of the
world’s art treasures; mother to cinematic
masterpieces such as La Dolce Vita, Ladri di
Biciclette and in recent years - La vita e bella
and Il Postino; home to figures of artistic and
worldwide influence like Dante, Michelangelo,
Raphael, Leonardo Da Vinci, Gian Lorenzo
Bernini, Filippo Brunelleschi, Federico Fellini,
Roberto Benigni, Sophia Loren, Marcello
Mastroianni, Pavarotti, Bocelli, Armani and
many more.
Art involves many things: creativity, expression, values, purpose and progress; and is used
by one and all, knowingly or unknowingly in
different forms. It inspires, stirring emotions
and intellect, creating a profound influence on
society and mankind, as has Italian ART. It is a
theme, although Italian in focus, to which
everyone can relate; and a cultural element the
city of Vancouver seeks, as is evident in the
growing interest of the arts locally.
For Italian Day 2015, the celebrations continue
with Italian ART as the centerpiece highlighting Italy’s influence, local Italo-Canadian contributions (individuals and businesses), as well
as Vancouver’s fine and performing arts community. Thematic components will include art
exhibits, interactive sketch art panels, architectural displays, theatre, film presentations,
street performances and more.

PAINTING
Born on April 15, 1452, in Vinci, Italy,
Leonardo da Vinci was concerned with
the laws of science and nature, which
greatly informed his work as a painter,
sculptor, inventor and draftsmen. His
ideas and body of work—which
includes "Virgin of the Rocks," "The
Last Supper," "Leda and the Swan" and
"Mona Lisa"—have influenced countless
artists and made da Vinci a leading
light of the Italian Renaissance.

SPONSORSHIP
OPPORTUNITIES
Partnering with Italian Day provides a
positive platform for community alignment
given its large audience and inclusive
nature. Sponsors will benefit from the
multiple channels of engagement, including
ability to interact and capitalize on exposure throughout the planning process and
during event based on sponsorship level,
packaged benefits and related goals.
As a non-profit organization, the Italian Day
Festival Society relies on community partnerships and corporate funding to help
realize the many aspects involved to successfully execute the event. In turn, sponsors and partners are highlighted and promoted based on level of sponsorship, as
well as given opportunities to showcase
themselves and respective products via our
marketing avenues, including street presence and revenue generating options. This
year we provide the opportunity for up to 4
title sponsors, more added benefits and
publicity, and the ability to customize sponsorship packages to meet sponsor needs
on all levels.
Sponsor support is valued and used for
critical event components relating to promotion and print material, staging and
exhibits, entertainment, fashion show,
street closures and related services, administrative resources, street activation and
activities. The planning and preparation is
a nine month process and our goal is to
continually improve in the depth of what
we offer both to sponsors and public, and
therefore maintaining timelines, including
funding, are important. Our objective is to
secure sponsors and partners by January
2015 or earlier in order that initiatives are
secure.
Italy has a very broad and diverse
architectural style, which cannot be
simply classified by period or region, due
to Italy's division into several city-states
until 1861. However, this has created a
highly diverse and eclectic range in
architectural designs. Italy is known for
its considerable architectural achievements, such as the construction of
arches, domes and similar structure
during ancient Rome, the founding of
the Renaissance architectural movement
in the late-14th to 16th century, and
being the homeland of Palladianism, a
style of construction which inspired
movements such as that of Neoclassical
architecture, and influenced the designs
which noblemen built their country
houses all over the world, notably in the
United Kingdom, Australia and the
United States of America during the
late-17th to early 20th centuries. Several
of the finest works in Western architecture, such as the Colosseum, the Duomo
of Milan, Florence cathedral and the
building designs of Venice are found in
Italy. Italy has an estimated total of
100,000 monuments of all varieties
(museums, palaces, buildings, statues,
churches, art galleries, villas, fountains,
historic houses and archaeological
remains).

BICYCLE THIEVES
(ITALIAN: LADRI DI BICICLETTE),
ALSO KNOWN AS THE BICYCLE THIEF,
is director Vittorio De Sica's 1948 story of a poor father
searching post-World War II Rome for his stolen bicycle,
without which he will lose the job which was to be the
salvation of his young family.
Adapted for the screen by Cesare Zavattini from a novel by
Luigi Bartolini, and starring Lamberto Maggiorani as the
desperate father and Enzo Staiola as his plucky young son,
Bicycle Thieves is one of the masterpieces of Italian neorealism. It received an Academy Honorary Award in 1950
and, just four years after its release, was deemed the greatest film of all time by Sight & Sound magazine's poll of
filmmakers and critics; fifty years later the same poll ranked
it sixth among greatest-ever films. It is also one of the top
ten among the British Film Institute's list of films you should
see by the age of 14.

family. Important to the event profile,

coverage, as well as act as an event
endorsement. The alliance between event

given the exceptional community reach and
positive branding the entities share with this
signature street festival.
MEDIA
RELATIONS
AND
ADVERTISING
Promoting Italian Day on The Drive, its
sponsors and participating business
community is key to the success of the
event and invested partner interests.
Besides our website and respective social
media avenues, the Italian Day Festival
Society also fulfills marketing objectives via
engaging Media Sponsors, a Media/Public
Relations firm (Laura Ballance Media
Group), as well as the creation of our own
Event Magazine (Il Giornale) where
businesses can advertise and the event
and partners are also highlighted.
Each Media Sponsor has unique needs and
offerings and therefore is approached with
a tailored package in mind, based on form
and level of sponsorship. In turn, like with
other sponsors, the Italian Day Festival
Society offers promotional benefits as
detailed in the sponsorship grid on the
previous page (individual page insert),
along with other customized offerings as
necessary.
ADVERTISING
Il Giornale is a 48 page souvenir event
magazine which includes complimentary
sponsor and partner advertisements, theme
related content and local business advertising opportunities. With a distribution of
5,000 print copies and a newly introduced
digital version in 2014 (found on Italian Day
website) - it is a forum for businesses who
seek to support the event through ad placement alone. It is important to note that the
added value of the digital version is the
capacity to reach hundreds of thousands of
people by way of its website presence
(a one year shelf life) and social media
promotion. Advertising rates will vary from
$550 to $1,000 and will include both print
and digital inclusion.
SCULPTURE
Pope Julius II commissioned Michelangelo to build his tomb in 1505 and it was
finally completed in 1545; Julius II died in
1513. The initial design by Michelangelo
was massive and called for over 40
statues. The statue of Moses would have
been placed on a tier about 3.74 meters
high, opposite a figure of St. Paul. In the
final design, the statue of Moses sits in
the center of the bottom tier.
Giorgio Vasari in the "Life of Michelangelo" wrote: "Michelangelo finished the
Moses in marble, a statue of five braccia,
unequalled by any modern or ancient
work. Seated in a serious attitude, he
rests with one arm on the tables, and
with the other holds his long glossy
beard, the hairs, so difficult to render in
sculpture, being so soft and downy that
it seems as if the iron chisel must have
become a brush. The beautiful face, like
that of a saint and mighty prince, seems
as one regards it to need the veil to
cover it, so splendid and shining does it
appear, and so well has the artist presented in the marble the divinity with
which God had endowed that holy
countenance. The draperies fall in graceful folds, the muscles of the arms and
bones of the hands are of such beauty
and perfection, as are the legs and
knees, the feet being adorned with
excellent shoes, that Moses may now be
called the friend of God more than ever,
since God has permitted his body to be
prepared for the resurrection before the
others by the hand of Michelangelo. The
Jews still go every Saturday in troops to
visit and adore it as a divine, not as a
man made sculpture.”
Keywords: Michelangelo Buonarroti, Gian Lorenzo
Bernini, Benvenuto Cellini, Donatello, Bartolomeo
Ammanati, Lorenzo Bartolini, Vincenzo Danti,
Umberto Boccioni...

CULINARY
ART
Italian cuisine has developed through centuries of
social and political changes, with roots as far back
as the 4th century BCE. It has its origins in Etruscan,
ancient Greek and Roman cuisines.
It is characterized by its simplicity, with many dishes
having only four to eight ingredients. Italian cooks
rely chiefly on the quality of the ingredients rather
than on elaborate preparation. Ingredients and
dishes vary by region. Many dishes that were once
regional, however, have proliferated with variations
throughout the country. In 2013 Italian cuisine was
ranked by CNN as the best cuisine in the world.

DESIGN
Italian design refers to all forms of
design, including interior, urban, fashion
and architectural. Italian architect, Luigi
Caccia claims that: ‘Quite simply, we are
the best. We have more imagination,
culture and are better mediators
between the past and future.’
Recognized as a worldwide trendsetter
in design, Italy continues to exert a vast
influence in this aspect, supported by its
leadership and quality signature
‘Made in Italy’.
