It’s that time of the year again for Deerwood
School’s Annual Fun Fair!
This year we have chosen a “Mardi Gras” theme!
Fun Fair
Feb 17th, 2017 PM
Here are some things that we need assistance with in order to
make our fun fair a success:
First of all, we ask that you take a few minutes to de-clutter so
that we may be able to inherit your unwanted, gently used items
for our “White Elephant” sale. (no clothing please) All other items may be dropped off
at the office anytime during school hours. Keep in mind that “one person’s junk is always another person’s treasure!”
We are also asking our bakers to get creative in the kitchen! Use your imagination and
whip up a cake (or cupcakes) for our cake walk! These donations of baked rewards are
always greatly appreciated as our kids have a great time with the cake walk, and truly get
to enjoy their winnings!
We will be pre-selling tickets during the morning if you wish to send money with your
child at that time. We will also send a letter with additional details later in the month to
keep you informed so please watch for that in your child’s backpack and online!
Friends & family are more than welcome to come & enjoy the fair as well. We also
welcome volunteers who wish to help at the various stations throughout the school.
Your assistance is always appreciated & we thank you in advance!

February is I-Love-to-Read month and we will be celebrating reading in many
ways at Deerwood School. There will be school wide reading periods
throughout the month, a daily reading trivia contest, a day to encourage
children to put away all video and computer games and READ as well as many
other activities. In honor of I-Love-to-Read month you could also pick a time to
do family wide reading at home. Let’s pick up a book, magazine, newspaper
and READ. HAPPY READING!
Our Junior High
basketball
season is in full
swing!
Convenience Store
ATTENTION:
Parents and staff of Deerwood
Elementary School! Just a reminder
that Mac’s Convenience store has
selected Deerwood Elementary
School to be part of their “Circle K
Fueling our Schools Program”, for
the 2016-17 school year. Circle K
has a long history of supporting
educational programs and they are
committed to raising funds for our
school this year. There will be
events running throughout the year
and for every litre of gas pumped at
Mac’s Convenience, we will receive
a percentage as a donation. With
that being said, if you are on empty,
think of supporting Deerwood and
filling up at Mac’s.

Don’t forget to
bring in your tabs!
By collecting can tabs at home,
school & work, the staff &
students of Deerwood School
can continue to assist in the
purchase of wheelchairs for
those in need.
Please continue to collect your
tabs & drop them off at the
office so we can help make a
difference in someone else’s
life!
Because of the continued
support of so many people, the
program continues to be
extremely successful!
The girls and
boys schedules
are posted on the Deerwood website.
Come on out and cheer on our Dragons!
As the days start to slowly get longer and
hopefully warmer, get the whole family
outside and enjoy the wonderful winter
activities Thompson has to offer.
We have access to downhill skiing at
Mystery Mountain, free cross-country
skiing on wonderfully groomed trails, free
skating at numerous outdoor rinks and
some great lakes to try ice-fishing on!
There is something outside to keep
everyone active and happy!
On Thursday, March 2nd, the Deerwood Science Fair
will be held at our school. Student participants are
asked to set up their projects between 8:30 and 8:45
A.M. on fair day. Judging will occur in the morning
with students being briefly pulled out of their classes
to be interviewed. From 1:15 to 2:15 P.M., classes
and families will have the opportunity to view the
projects. Before 3:30 P.M., the winners will be announced. The projects will be
disassembled and taken home at 3:30 P.M. Projects in grades four to eight may
be invited to go to the Northern Regional Science Fair which will be in late
March or early April. The participants will have plenty of time to “spruce up”
their project for the big fair. (More information will be given to those students
after our fair.)
Please direct any questions to Ms. Clare at the school. Entry forms are available
from Ms. Clare and are to be submitted by Friday,
February 17th at 3:30 P.M.
Anyone who has a science background who would like
to be a judge, please contact Ms. Clare at
204—677—6125 by leaving a message, or email
[email protected]. Thank you

What’s new?
Pink Day has been set for February 22nd district-wide. Staff at Deerwood
Ms. Voigt
are busy planning school community activities to commemorate the day.
Remember to wear your Pink shirt!
Kids Help Phone has a great interactive website. There are activities for
children and teens and helpful information on several categories such as Dating, Bullying, Emotional Health, LGBTTQQ,
Internet Safety, etc. Take some time and tour the website at www.kidshelpphone.ca!
Monthly Practice
Father Winter takes a toll on all of us. Get ahead of the “winter blues” by developing a self-care plan. A self-care plan
doesn’t need to be expensive or time consuming. Pick an activity and do something for yourself every day. Here are a few
examples:
 Reading
 Visiting with friends
 Reflecting, mindfulness or praying
 Keeping your environment bright and cheerful with art, plants or flowers
 Watch a movie
 Take a long bath
 Listen to music
 Go snow shoeing, skiing or sledding
It is important to take the time to take care of ourselves. Use healthy coping strategies to continuously renew yourself by:
 Eating a well-balanced diet
 Drink plenty of water
 Limit caffeine intake
 Exercise
 Get enough rest
 Know and respect your limits
 Listen to your body and note any changes in your habits, attitudes and moods
