NOTICE OF DECLARATION OF PARTICULAR TREES AND PARTICULAR GROUPS OF TREES
''CHAMPION TREES" UNDER SECTION 12(1) (A) AND (8) OF THE NATIONAL FORESTS ACT,
1998 (ACT NO. 84 OF 1998), AS AMENDED.
Published under Government Notice 890 in Government Gazette 33614. Commencement date: 15 October

By virtue of powers vested in me under Section 12 (1) (a) and (b) of the National Forests Act, 1998, I, Tina
Joemat-Pettersson, Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries hereby declare that all particular trees and
particular group of trees set out in the schedule below as protected trees. These include the renewed
declaration of existing Champion Trees (with the exception of trees that partially collapsed or died and which
are hereby de-listed), as well as new Champion trees to be added.
The effect of this declaration is that in terms of Section 15 (1) of the National Forests Act, 1998, no person
may cut, disturb, damage or destroy any protected tree or possess, collect, remove, transport, export,
purchase, sell, donate or in any other manner acquired or dispose of any protected tree or any forest product
derived from a protected tree, except under a licence granted by the Minister or in terms of an exemption
from the provisions of this subsection published by the Minister in the Gazette on the advice of the Council.
Contravention of this declaration is regarded as a first category offence that may result in a person who is
found guilty of being sentenced to a fine or imprisonment for a period up to three years, or both a fine and
imprisonment.
