Summary
Lulworth Student Company is operating as a private hall provider and is pleased to support the
Bournemouth University Travel Plan 2014-2018. The Student accommodation has a capacity of 250
and offers for all residences bike storage and is located right next to the Lansdowne campus with
good access to bus transports. As a relative new Student Accommodation Building in Bournemouth
we are committed to improve travel habits, options and the environmental impact in and around
Bournemouth.
The trends of high travel demand and rising congestions lead to the conception of a sustainable
project, which works towards a more sustainable travel attitude. The Travel Plan is a central part of
the Lulworth Student Company and Bournemouth University to promote a sustainable travel
initiative expansion of transport services, improving infrastructure and a better use of existing
capacity. The long term strategy can assist in increasing accessibility to transport while reducing
congestion, local air pollution, greenhouse gases, noises, which is an outcome inspired by collective
behaviour change.
This Travel Plan has been produced for Lulworth Student Company in Bournemouth and in
incorporation with the Bournemouth University primarily for Students.
This document provides an overview of the current transport establishment and travel patterns of
BU Students. It also sets out the measures which we intend to introduce in order to meet our travel
plan objectives. The delivery of this action plan requires effective leadership, communication and
investments.
Lulworth Student Company aims:





To encourage students to a ‘green’ and ‘active’ modes of travel to and from the campus.
Managing student’s use of cars to travel to campus
Raising awareness amongst students of the impact of their travel choices on their health and
local environment.
Improvements to the quality of facilities for the whole range of sustainable travel modes
(e.g. working with partners to improve cycling facilities, quality of public transport, service
and facilities)
Improving information and communication (through websites, Apps and other sources) with
other institutions for transport and travel information give students a better navigation of
travel choices and options.
Bournemouth University launched the first travel plan in 2003 in response the national and local
transport policy, outlining the need of more sustainable travel options. Their primary intention was
to reduce the numbers of staff and students travelling to the university by car alone. After
monitoring the new implemented travel plan, which indicated achievements but also revealed area
of improvements. The published travel plan in 2008- 2012 was successfully implemented with new
3
investments in the subsidised university bus services and showed the first positive result in reducing
the number of students travelling by car alone.
Key numbers of success:


Staff driving alone to work decreased from 67% in 2003 down to 49% in 2010.
Numbers of student travelling by car alone reduced by 8% from 2008 until 2010.
Despite the positive numbers, the long term objectives of the travel plan is to reduce the numbers of
staff travelling to work alone significantly. Our collective aspiration is not only to increase the usage
of bikes and promote cycling options and services but also to additionally increase the proportion of
car shares across all distances travelled.
This travel plan attend to measure the accessibility of Lulworth Student Housing and Bournemouth
University for staff, students and visitors with a range of travel options.
This document will be regularly reviewed, reflecting our belief that a developed travel plan can
mitigate adverse traffic impacts and the Government recognises their importance at the local level.
LSC genuinely believes that a travel plan as such is a continuous improvement, requiring monitoring
and revision to ensure it remains relevant to us and those using the site.
The key objectives for this Travel Plan













To capture commuter and business travel data for carbon foot printing purposes in order to
Satisfy the Planning Process and set the baseline for future reductions;
To improve the choice of transport options and facilities available to staff, students and
visitors travelling to, from, and between University sites;
To implement travel initiatives through behaviour change that reduce transport-related
emissions and thus meet our strategic targets to reduce the environmental impact of the
Student residence travel demand locally, nationally and globally;
To reduce the use of single occupancy vehicles by staff travelling to and from and between,
Student accommodation site and increase the use of cycling, walking and public transport
use;
To promote more sustainable ways of working;
To improve the health and fitness of staff and students through the promotion of walking
and cycling;
Deliver a leading Travel Plan
Support the Estates Development Framework and associated planning applications
Provide and continue to improve real and affordable transport options and facilities
Manage the demand of car parking within current and future levels of provision
Reduce the impact of travel associated with the Student Housing on the local community.
4
Targets
In order to access whether we are successful in achieving these objectives, a range of output and
outcome targets will be used. By the end of 2018, with the proposed initiatives, the Lulworth
Student Comapny will: Raise awareness of sustainable travel options open to University staff,
students and visitors;





Student travel habits
The 2010 student travel survey highlighted that the average student commute is 4.7 miles with 83%
of students living within 5 miles of the university and 67% living within two miles. Analysis of the
2010 students survey revealed that there was a significant decrease in the numbers= of students
driving alone on three days a week or more to the university from 2007 to 2010 (from 15% to 7%).
The reduction in student’s car trips resulted in an increase in more sustainable modes. Walking 115,
cycling (1%), and bus travels (4) all increased between 2007 and 2010.
The previous Travel Plan has produced significant improvements in students travel over the last five
years. This demonstrates the benefits of rolling out measures over the long-term and embedding
them within the overall student experience package. The number of staff choosing to travel alone by
car to the university has risen between 2007 and 2012. The up to dated Travel Plan will address this
trend as well as managing the levels of single occupancy car use as future development plans
implemented.

The Initiative on offer through Lulworth Student Company and
Bournemouth University.
By walking Lulworth Company is provide walk and cycle maps and commission a permeability and
accessibility review of walking and cycling routes from popular postcodes our staff and students live
in.
By bike gives staff and students the opportunity to cycle safely and cheaply to the university. If you
subscribe to the BU scheme you will be given the loan of a refurbished bike with lights and a D lock
for the academic year, along with a cycle voucher, access to a free cycle skills training course, and
access to a free bike maintenance workshop. The cost for subscribing to BU by bike is minimal.
By bus offers students and visitors a direct and convenient way to travel to/from and between the
university campuses. Staff can travel for free between the Talbot and the Lansdowne on the U1 and
U4 services. The Bournemouth University subsidises the U1,U2,U3 and U4 services. Staff and
students can also use the 15, M1 and M2 services, as well taking advantage of cheaper fares through
‘the Bus for BU key card’. The benefits of using the key card rather than include cheaper fares,
convenience, security, less waster faster boarding times! You can use the key on all other More Bus
services (except night buses) after 9am Mondays to Fridays, anytime weekends and pay just child
cash fare to the driver. For more details: https://www1.bournemouth.ac.uk/about/directions-andmaps
BU Car Share Group
Whilst we hope to make alternative transport choices more attractive to car drivers, we
acknowledge that sometimes sustainable travel methods are not possible. However, there are
changes that can be made to reduce the environmental impact of car use. Lulworth and BU offers
staff and students the opportunity to save money. BU has its own free car sharing database which
matches people making similar journeys. The Travel Plan hopes to encourage lifts sharing by offering
dedicated parking spaces and other incentives for car sharers. Members of the BU car sharing group
will qualify for the ‘Lift Home Policy’; if your driver has to leave without you, the University will pay
for a taxi. More info under: https://www1.bournemouth.ac.uk/about-bournemouthuniversitytransport_and_maps/car_sharing.html
BU Travel Champion, the Travel Plan will seek to identify walking, cycling, bus, rail and car share
champions to enhance the profile of each travel type. The modal champions will be passionate
about the benefits associated with their mode and keen to tell other about why travelling that way is
so beneficial. If you are interested in being a travel champion, or would just like more information
about the BU Travel Plan, please email: [email protected].

others to travel by alternative means, but it will also reduce journey times for bus shares and bus
8
passengers and car sharers, whilst making walking and cycling a safer and better travel options.
Reducing the number of car journeys to/from the university will improve air quality and reduce
congestions on the local road network.

Management of new arrivals and departures.
Arrival
On commencement of the new academic year we have allocated for the new intake of students a 35 day arrival window and a given time allocation on a certain day for the students to arrive at the
premises. We have highlighted all local car parks close to our student halls of residence for students
being dropped off by family/friends in cars, by spreading the arrivals over the course of a 5-day
period this will help with any congestion issues that might arise. All students that will be arriving by
car will be given a time slot and day for them to come down to the residence, by monitoring this we
will not have any issues.
Students arriving by train / coach will be given directions by email on how to get to our residence
and bus times if needed, they will find all the relevant maps and timetables in our travel plan or on
our website.
18
Departure:
As the student’s courses and exams differ towards the end of the academic year, this allows the
departure of student from the residence to take place over the course of the month. All students
being picked up by cars have their allocated car parks to be picked up from and all students leaving
by train / coach have the information to them in their travel plans.
