This year marks the 28th year LAKE-SUMTER COMPUTER SOCIETY
has been in existence. We have seen the Internet grow from its nonexistence to a major part of our society. We can read just about anything we want on our
laptop, tablet or any of the other electronic devices. We can find nearly any fact by asking Google, Alexa, Siri or other electronic search engines.
We don’t need to type a message if we don’t want to...just speak into our “devices”.
Try to buy a typewriter...there are none available. Our English language is changing. We
may find “LOL” in a message from our grandchildren, meaning “laugh-out-loud.” How
about “BRB”? We find out it means “be-right-back.”

The tenth annual Social Event
of the Lake Sumter Computer
Society was held on Thursday,
January 19, 2017. It was held
in the beautifully appointed
Magnolia Room on the campus
of Lake Sumter State College.
It was attended by 44 people,
including Society members,
guests and some College personnel. The Event was an opportunity for the members to get together to socialize and to meet and informally talk with each other and with the speakers . The
speakers had been invited as a special thank you for their efforts and for sharing
their expertise and time for the benefit of the members of our Society. It was
delightful to meet them and talk with them individually in a more casual atmosphere.
The Magnolia Room had been decorated with spring and Valentines Day decorations and was, as always, a beautiful location.

Roger Ehrig, President, opened the meeting with a greeting
at 2:15. Then the members enjoyed the buffet-style hors
d'oeurves that had been provided by the TLC Foods. These
included his delicious pork and beef meatballs, meatballs
alfredo, quiches, bread bowls and dip, fresh vegetables and
dip, cookies, punch and water. As always, the selection and
abundance was met
with numerous
compliments from
the Society members. After a brief
period of time to
enjoy the food, Mr.
Ehrig continued
with the meeting,
thanking Society
members and the
Executive Committee members who have also given of
their dedication and knowledge to keep the Society going.
The Society could not continue to exist without their
knowledge, their willingness to share it and their dedication.
At the end of the meeting, a drawing was held for door
prizes. Items available for draw by the members were two
refurbished laptops, several flash drives, a digital clock
with USB ports, various cases for electronic equipment and
other items. All the recipients seemed very pleased.
It was a wonderful time to relax, enjoy, and get to meet
other members and locals of the community. It was a time
greatly enjoyed by all.

Spring Flowers
By Editor
I have always enjoyed the Spring of the year because of all
the new growth that comes out at this time of year. But over the
last few year even more so because I have been growing amaryllis and I enjoy watching my new beds of amaryllis bloom.
I have included blooms from
three of last years flowers. These
pictures represent a beautiful green
verity, a very frilly red variety, and
a multi-blooming pink variety. For
the pink amaryllis I have had as
many as five on a stem and for the
red, as many as eight on a stem.
My latest project is growing
amaryllis from seeds. Not all flow-
Are you interested in having some smaller versions of Microsoft Office programs are your devices? If you are, Microsoft is
giving free access to the most popular of these applications Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and OneNote. All you need
to do is sign up for a free Microsoft account. You can then
download the mobile apps free to your tablet or smartphone
from the iTunes store (Apple) or Google Play store (Android).
The Office apps include the most popular and useful features in
this powerful suite. The limited version of Word, for example,
may not allow a user to put shadows behind a photo or add section breaks. But it does include a large collection of fonts and
styles, margin settings, the ability to insert photos, tables, and
headers and footers, plus many other tools needed to create a
quality document.
Requirements for Apple devices are iPad with iOS 7 or later
and iPhone 5, 6 or 6 plus. For Android devices, the requirements for tablets and phones are kitkat4.4 or later and an ARMbased or Intel 86 processor and a 7’-10.1’ screen on a tablet,
according the Microsoft website.
All the apps come with a large number of templates for easy
design looks. Excel has over 25 templates. PowerPoint includes
more slide types than the full-featured version. All the apps are
formatted for touch by streamlining the command ribbon and
putting more space between each icon. They also work well
with a keyboard.
The perfect accompaniment to the Office apps is the OneDrive
mobile app. This Microsoft cloud storage app includes a generous amount of free storage to non-Office 365 users: 15GB, plus
3 GB more if you enable automatic photo uploads and 5GB
more if you refer five people to OneDrive. That is more free
storage than iCloud, Google Drive or Dropbox. (Office 365

LibreOffice
By Dick Maybach
LibreOffice originated in Germany in 1993 as Star Office, which became OpenOffice, first under Sun Microsys-
tems and later under Oracle. In 2010 a group of developers, unhappy with Oracle's management of the
project, formed the Document Foundation, and used
the OpenOffice code as a basis for LibreOffice. Oracle later donated OpenOffice to the Apache Software
Foundation, where its development appears to be
lagging behind the vigorous pace of LibreOffice. Although LibreOffice and MS Office do similar tasks,
their operating details differ considerably.
If you have used MS Office for a long time, then
your first experience with LibreOffice will probably
leave you frustrated with illogical menus and unpredictable operation. I've used LibreOffice for years
(and OpenOffice before that) and those are exactly
my feelings when I try to use MS Office. If you're
thinking of installing LibreOffice and trying it for a few
minutes, don't bother; you won't like it, because it's
not an MS Office clone. If you are using MS Office
casually at home, you have little reason to change,
as LibreOffice offers no new capabilities. However,
you may wish to consider changing if your environment changes, for example if you purchase a new
computer or change operating systems.
Now it makes sense to ask yourself whether to
purchase a new version of MS Office or to make the
effort to relearn your habits. If you really need something “Just like MS Office,” then you should pay the
money. A good comparison of these two suites appears at http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/
Feature_Comparison:_LibreOffice__Microsoft_Office, but note that this is the Website of
the Document Foundation, the publisher of LibreOffice. The two suites have different capabilities and
features; if you do specialized work, check the Website referenced above for the features that are important to you.
The software is available at http://
www.libreoffice.org/download/libreoffice-fresh/. You
won't find a book on LibreOffice in your local bookstore, but you can download a good 388-page manual from http://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/
documentation/. If after reading this you need more
detailed information, the same site has manuals for
the individual LibreOffice applications, but they are
for earlier versions. There is also a 512-page tutorial
on document styling at http://
designingwithlibreoffice.com/, which you'll find inter-
esting after you've mastered the basics. Some books
are available from on-line vendors, but be careful,
many are for older versions, and others are printed
copies of what you can download for free. LibreOffice
is evolving quickly; as a result, even the latest manuals are somewhat out of date with respect to minor
details. Like all full-featured office suites, the LibreOffice applications are complex, and trying to learn to
use them by trial-and-error will be tedious and frustrating, making a good tutorial essential.
Although you can start the individual LibreOffice
applications directly, you can also open a general application
(Screen 1),
from which
all the individual applications as
well as the
recentlyopens files
are available.
Screen 1
Write is the LibreOffice word-processor, and is the
only type of office application that many home users
run (Screen 2). The two toolbars at the top are configurable, so you can populate them with the functions
you use most often. The top one is the Standard Toolbar and is nearly the same for all LibreOffice applications. Below that is the Formatting Toolbar, which
adapts to the
current application. The
right sidebar
also changes
according to
what you are
doing. In the

text and as a result the sidebar shows text styles.
However, all the functions in the sidebar are also

available on the menu bar and the toolbars, although
accessing them may require several mouse clicks. My
work requires little formatting, and as a result I usually
keep the sidebar closed to allow more space for the
document. Writer, like all the LibreOffice tools can be
customized by adding, moving, and customizing toolbars, but this can become a tar pit. Be sure you are
familiar with basic operation and carefully read a good
tutorial before you venture too far into customizing.
In both Linux and OS X, menu bars appear at the top
of the screen rather than at the top of the application
window where they appear in Windows. As a result,
the main menu bar isn't visible in the above screen-
shot. It appears below (Screen 3).
Screen 3
Like all LibreOffice applications, Writer can save files
in several formats, as shown in the drop-down menu
that appears when you select “Save as” (Screen 4).
Making Programs, Files, And Web
Sites Easy To Get To In Win 10
by Glenn Richards
I stuck with Win XP longer than most because it did
what I wanted to do and I knew how to make it do
what I wanted it to do. I had deleted excess files so
that backup images of the C-drive were about
300KB, and took about 2 minutes to create or restore.
The Quick Launch Toolbar pinned to the left side of
the XP Desktop provided one-click access to many
programs, files, and web sites, and the Favorites Bar
provided easy access to other web sites. Other
WinXP shortcuts were in the Start menu and under
folders in the Start menu.
Before I found out Win10 has a Quick Launch folder
(C:\Users\Default\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Intern
et Explorer\Quick Launch) I created on my Desktop a
Ishortcut to a folder I named QLT. In that folder I put
shortcuts to files and programs I want easy access
to. While this is a two-click access to targets I want,
versus the one-click access of WinXP QLT, it is far
better than searching for what I may not remember
the name of. I still don't know what the Win10 Quick
Launch folder is good for, though I know it can be
pinned to the Taskbar.
A Win 10 feature I also use is "Pin to Start." This creates tiles on the Desktop that are shortcuts to programs for which a right-click on the program, Pin to
Start, was clicked. "Pin to Taskbar" is also available,
which I have tried but don't use. "Pin to Quick Access" is something I have seen but not tried.

The QLT folder is kept on a "Data" partition because
I would not want it changed if I have to restore the
operating system partition from an image. Likewise,
a Notepad file in which I keep a record of things that
have been done to the system (Windows Updates,
programs installed or uninstalled, backup images
created, hardware changes. and other housekeeping
actions) is located on the Data partition and accessed via a shortcut on the Desktop.
Win 10's Internet Explorer Favorites Bar is still a
handy place to keep the addresses of frequentlyaccessed web pages. Find it at

site you want easy access to) that you do not need to
have showing on the FB, left-drag it from where it
appeared to the folder you added in the FB folder. If
the FB is not showing at the top of the IE window,

Acronis True Image
Cloud a major Advance
by Bart Koslow,
Review Chair, Channel Islands PCUG, CA
December 2015 issue, The Outer Edge
www.cipcug.org/review (at) cipcug.org
Acronis True Image Cloud (ATIC) is the latest update of the
Acronis Back Up and Recovery program. I have used it for
many years and in the past have found it to be the best
program of its type available. This update is a major advance in its change from a desktop backup program to an
Internet of things and multiple devices backup program. It
provides unlimited cloud backup for one year in addition to
the usual computer backups. The program interface has
been completely revised to accommodate numerous additional functions that have been added. There is a new
menu on the left side with seven categories, including
Backup, Archive, Dashboard, Sync, Tools, Account and
Help. Clicking on each category brings up a sub-menu.
I selected Backup. The submenu and screen contain all the
selections for image backup and restore choices for your
computer that previously existed, with various choices like
non-stop backup, full, incremental, etc., as well as a simple
selection to recover images or individual folders and files.
You now have a large selection of where to back up.
Choices are hard drive (internal or external), solid state
drive, USB flash drive, file server, NAS or NDAS, network
share, FTP server, DVD or Blu-Ray and memory card. You
may use password protection with 256-bit AES encryption
for your backups to prevent prying eyes from viewing your
confidential data.
The next category, Archive, searches selected folders and
files on your computer and lists them by size. It will then
archive in the cloud the folders and files that you check. I
selected a few files I do not use and 39 GB was transferred
to Acronis cloud storage. After archiving, the archived files
are deleted from your computer. When I went to Acronis
Cloud to view and restore the files I received a message
that Acronis Cloud is not currently available. This condition
Page 5
persisted, so I contacted Acronis Support. This is the reply I received:
“What you see in Web browser as ‘MYCOMPUTERBART’ is a link to empty container. 39.68 MB of data do
not exist on Acronis Cloud. Developers are aware of the
issue that a misleading error message is displayed:
‘server is not available’ instead of showing empty archive
with 0 bytes of used space. We are investigating when
and why data was deleted from Acronis Cloud. As of now
it is unclear what happened …”
In other words, my Archived 39.68 MB was erased, and I
have lost that data. I will report back at a later date on the
final result.
ATIC has added Mobile Device Data Backup for Android
and Apple devices. I downloaded and installed the Acronis Backup app on my Android phone, Android tablet
and iPad, and backed up data from each device to Acronis Cloud. Using the Dashboard category on my PC
takes me to Acronis Cloud. The first menu item, Devices,
showed the four devices on which I have installed Acronis: my phone, my PC and my two tablets. Using the
Dashboard, you may access and manage (delete, restore, back up, etc.), Archives, Syncs, and Backups from
any of your devices, back up data from any device that is
on, and synchronize backed up data between devices.
The third category on the main menu is Sync. When you
choose Sync, you are asked to pick the default data file
to sync across all devices, and you are taken to the Windows File Manager to choose the data to sync. Once you
make your choice, you are taken to Sync on Acronis
Cloud to send the data to the cloud.
Tools, the fourth menu item, contains utilities that allow
you to clone your disk image to a new disk, create rescue
media on a CD or flash drive to use if your computer is
not bootable, create universal restore media to restore an
image to dissimilar hardware, which includes migrating
your system from a hard disk drive to a solid state drive.
Other tools:
Try and Decide: When you turn Try and Decide on, your
computer is in the Try mode. After that, you can perform
any potentially dangerous operations without worrying
that you might damage your operating system, programs
or data. When you turn Try and Decide off, you decide if
you want to apply the changes to your computer or discard them.
Startup Recovery Manager: The Acronis Startup Recovery Manager lets you start Acronis True Image 2016 without loading the operating system. With this feature, you
can use Acronis True Image 2016 by itself to recover

Another Blonde Joke
A guy took his blonde girlfriend to her first football game.
They had great seats right behind their team's bench. After
the game, he asked her how she liked the experience. "Oh, I
really liked it," she replied, "especially the tight pants and all
the big muscles, but I just couldn't understand why they were
killing each other over 25 cents." Dumbfounded, her date
asked, "What do you mean?" "Well, they flipped a coin, one
team got it, and then for the rest of the game, all they kept
screaming was, 'Get the quarterback! Get the quarterback!'
I'm like, hello? It's only 25 cents!"
One Ups-Man-Ship
After 25 years of marriage, a husband took a long
look at his wife one day and said: "Twenty-five years
ago, we had a cheap apartment, a cheap car, and I
slept on a sofa bed, but I got to sleep every night
with a sexy twenty-six year old blonde. Now, we have
a nice house, a nice car and a big bed, but I'm sleeping with a fifty-one year old woman. It seems that
you're not pulling your weight."
She replied calmly: "Then why don't you go out and
find a sexy twenty-six year old blonde? And when
you do, I'll make sure once again that you'll be living
in a cheap apartment, driving a cheap car, and sleeping on a sofa bed."

damaged partitions, even if the operating system won’t boot.
Unlike booting from Acronis removable media, you will not
need a separate media or network connection to start Acronis
True Image 2016, and Acronis Secure Zone.
Acronis Secure Zone is a special secure partition that you
can create on your computer for storing backups. Acronis
Secure Zone uses a FAT32 file system.
The Account category shows details of your Acronis account,
including how much space you are using in the cloud. Last is
Help.
Acronis claims it is up to 50 percent faster than the competition. I can vouch for this as I have compared its backup
speed with many of the competitors. This is one of the many
reasons I have used Acronis. While cloud backup is the most
secure backup, I found that it is considerably slower than
backing up to a local hard disk.
ATIC comes with a free copy of Parallels Access. This is a
program that allows you to remotely access and control your
computer from a tablet or cell phone. There are apps for Android, IOS and Amazon. It sells on the Internet for $40.
The new Acronis True Image Cloud (2016) is a large, versatile program. With all its expanded capabilities it continues to
lead the field. It is relatively easy to use with its new menu
system. There is a manual you may download as well as a
comprehensive Help file. I recommend the Acronis local
backup program (see box above) for everyone from novices
to experts. It is still the best you can find. However, Acronis
has some problems with its cloud services. Once this is
cleared up, I will be able to recommend Acronis Cloud as
well. I will report on this in the future in an addendum to this

Using a VPN
security issues with the VPN providers. They are getting access to all your traffic, after all. Some providers like Hola VPN have had security issues, so you
should steer clear.

Have you ever wondered what a VPN is or does?
Basically, a VPN can help you access content that’s
blocked in your region and help maintain your anonymity around the web. All you need is an app that
offers VPN services for free.
A VPN (Virtual Private Network) is basically a way
to funnel all your web traffic through a remote
server. This makes it look like you’re in a different
location and obscures your real IP address. VPNs
encrypt the traffic passing through them, making it
harder for anyone else to listen in on your connection, even if you connect to an unsecured Wi-Fi network.
Since your connection appears to be coming from a
different area, you can access geo-restricted services
like the BBC. Some of the more popular ones like
Netflix and Hulu have gotten serious about blocking
VPNs, though. It’s also important to note possible
VPNs do add another “hop” to your connection, so
increased latency is usually part of the deal. A fast
VPN shouldn’t add a perceptible amount of delay, but
some free mobile VPNs will make it tough to do
things like video calls. Speeds also vary dramatically
from one service to the next, so you may wish to test
the speed of the VPN because there is no standard for
the industry. Speedtest is just one of the programs
you may wish to use.
You can also go your own way and use Android’s
built-in VPN tool. With a few tweaks, you can make
it a little easier to use, too.
