Mercantilism is described as a large country taking a domain over a smaller set of land or a country to use their
natural resources and extend their influences and power. The English colonies were a great candidate for
mercantilism due to their ability to provide materials for Great Britain. The French and Dutch are also good
examples because they came to the new world in search of new resources and land. The English were upset
when they found out the colonies had been exporting materials to other countries, so they passed the
Navigational Acts, which restricted colonial trade. The French would do their fur tapping with Canada and due
to this they have a stronger bond with the natives.
The dutch came over to America and made a settlement called New Amsterdam to start a new life, however
they ended up going to war with the colonists and lost their dutch rule and became an English colony that
would be renamed. New Amsterdam became the state/colony of New York, and later on gave no vote towards
the passing of the Declaration of Independence. French Quebec, New amsterdam, and Pennsylvania were all
established for the benefit of business and religion. Pennsylvania was established by William Penn for quakers
who practiced religion tolerance and equality for women. New amsterdam, which was later taken by the british,
was in it for the business as well as trade. New quebec however, was in it for the business for fur trade as well
as the spread of catholicism. The economy in the english colonies was really diverse with fishing, farming, and
trading occurring there. Fur trapping was France's main source of income, while the middle colonies main
source of income was Tobacco.
