Unit 4 Extra Credit Task:
Some fifth grade classes are making cookies to demonstrate their understanding of fractions.
Some classes will make sugar cookies and the other classes will make oatmeal cookies. They
need to adjust the recipes to make larger or smaller quantities. They need your help with
determining the quantities of ingredients needed.
Step 1: Get ready to cook
1. Mrs. Konken wants to bring enough of each ingredient to make the sugar cookies and oatmeal cookies as they
are written on the recipes. How much of each ingredient will she need?
2. Which recipe uses more white sugar? How much more white sugar does it need?
3. Which recipe uses more baking soda? How much more baking soda does it need?
Step 2: Adjust the Recipes
4. If The Good News Club needs to change the sugar cookie recipe so that it will make 36 cookies, how much of
each ingredient will they need?
5. For Mrs. Huffschmidt’s I.F. group, the sugar cookie recipe needs to be changed so that it will make 6 cookies.
Determine how much of each ingredient will be needed.
6. The oatmeal cookie recipe needs to be adjusted so that it will make 36 cookies. How much of each ingredient
will be needed?
Step 3: It’s your turn to cook!
Visit http://www.bettycrocker.com/recipes/dishes/cookie-and-bar-recipes/cookies-to-bake-with-kids or another kidfriendly recipe site and choose a recipe that you’d like to cook. *Please do not make a recipe that includes peanuts
7. Print or rewrite the recipe neatly. Be sure to include the number of servings that the recipe makes.
8. Adjust the recipe so that you can feed the 28 kids in our class plus Mrs. Brewton! Explain how you adjusted the
recipe and rewrite your version of it.
9. Is it possible to get the exact number of servings by adjusting the recipe? If not, adjust the recipe to get as
close as possible (make sure everyone gets a snack). How could the left-over snack(s) be shared?
Step 4: Presentation
Part I - Create a display (digital or posters) that includes the following:
 The total amount of each ingredient needed to make the original Sugar Cookie Recipe and the Oatmeal Cookie
Recipe. How did you find the totals? Show your work and explain what important steps you had to take.
 The new adjusted sugar cookie recipes for The Good News Club and Mrs. Huffschmidt’s class.
 The new adjusted oatmeal cookie recipe
 Your chosen recipe (the original version AND the adjusted version) Explain how you adjusted the recipe to make
enough for our class. Explain how left-over cookies (see question 10) could be shared
 SNACK! Bring a batch of your homemade snack for us to sample  (If your child is unable to bring a snack for the
class, please contact Mrs. Brewton for an alternate assignment.) Remember to make sure your snack is already
cut or bagged up for easy distribution.
Part 2 – Real Math Talk Diary
Use language of the standards (math vocabulary) to explain how you solved these real-world problems. Create a
notebook or use a folder to keep your math diary. *If you choose to create the diary digitally, please scan in pages of
your computation. Please include complete sentences about the following:
 Information about the white sugar & baking soda (from questions 3 and 4). What steps did you take to find the
solution to these questions? Explain!
 Does 1/3 of the Oatmeal cookie make more cookies than 4/6 of the Sugar Cookie recipe? Explain how you know.
 What steps did you take to adjust the recipe for The Good News Club? Be sure to include the adjusted recipe!
 What steps did you take to adjust the recipe for Mrs. Huffschmidt’s class? Be sure to include the adjusted recipe!
 What steps did you take to adjust the oatmeal cookie recipe so that it can serve 36? Be sure to include the
adjusted recipe!
