New Student Experience
2014
We welcome you to experiences that will both educate and delight you! This page only provides
a ‘bird’s eye’ view; your complete syllabus and calendar are on Blackboard, which you should
consult daily. It is your out-of-class communication mode with your professor, and you will find
many aids there!
Course Description
All new Baylor students are required to complete a New Student Experience (NSE) course,
which is designed to help you transition to college life and make a strong connection to the
Baylor community. Transitioning from high school to university is challenging, even for the
most academically prepared students. For most, the opportunities to develop academically,
personally, and professionally are greater than they have ever experienced…but great also are the
expectations.
Baylor offers a broad range of excellent opportunities designed to help you develop and prepare
for world-wide leadership and service. How will you make informed decisions about what to get
involved in? How will you coordinate your priorities to find time to accomplish your goals? Do
you know what your long-term and short-term goals are? We will help you consider these!
This first semester is a time for exploration. We want you to discover all that Baylor has to offer
and make good decisions that are going to help ensure your success. So think of this course as a
gift. As you navigate through your first few weeks on campus, this class will meet and provide
you with some dedicated time for intentional reflection. Let us explore together!
Course Goals
The mission of Baylor
University is to educate men
and women for worldwide
leadership and service by
integrating academic excellence
and Christian commitment
within a caring community.
The specific goals of NSE Spanish 1401 are:
• Connect to Baylor
• Succeed Academically
• Develop Personal and Professional Goals
• Understand Baylor's Mission
Both our in-class and out-of-class activities will develop these goals and support Baylor’s
mission.
Attendance and Grading
The Department of Modern Languages and Cultures (MLC) requires 80% attendance; this means
that at 15 absences (or 11 absences for classes meeting 4 days/week), excused or unexcused, you
fail the class. However, let’s hope you never approach this number! In order to succeed in this
course, you need the daily practice in class with the teacher and your classmates. We are a
community of learners, interacting and supporting each other. If you are absent, you must email
the teacher before the class meets if at all possible; if you do not, the teacher will pursue you!
Please plan to NEVER be absent.
The New Student Experience is 10% of your grade; it will consist of 5% for special NSE in-class
activities targeting the above goals, and 5% for special NSE out-of-class activities targeting the
same goals. Specifics of these requirements will appear on Blackboard.

New Student Experience--POLICIES
Fall 2014
In addition to the requirements of general 1401 classes, all instructors of the New Student Experience have
agreed upon the following policies:
 For all ten chapters, the instructor will require students to complete activities from “Practice” and
“WebSAM”.
 Tutorials of VISTAS, designed to help students complete Practice and WebSAM, will be encouraged as
needed.
 Instructors will incorporate quizzes into the final grade breakdown so that students are encouraged to study
and learn concise amounts of information during the semester.
 The first quiz will be about the syllabus.
 Late work will not be accepted for any reason, nor may missed quizzes be made up for any reason. In order
to accommodate students who miss assignments for legitimate reasons, instructors will consider
dropping/excusing the lowest homework and quiz grade(s).
In-class activities: (5% of grade)
 All essays will be written in class and will reflect NSE objectives. Their errors will be marked by the
instructor, returned to you, and corrected by you in class. Minimum: two.
 Some in-class activities will be designated as NSE experiences and the grades for those will be entered under
the “In-class NSE Activities” classification. These will be announced at the time.
Out-of-class activities: (5% of grade)

Your goal: 50 points
