That means that a donkey looks like a horse in many ways. It has a tail and four hooves, but its ears are much longer than a horse's ears. A male donkey is called a "jack" and a female donkey is called a "jenny". Baby donkeys are called "foals". Donkeys eat grass and plants. They enjoy carrots, too. A donkey makes a loud noise called a "bray" that sounds like "HEE-HAW!" You can hear a donkey bray from far away. Donkeys can be very friendly, and are often used for giving children rides. 5 Donkeys are used all to help people all over the world on farms and in villages. They are used to pull carts. They are used to carry heavy objects. If a donkey is mistreated it can find a safe home at a donkey sanctuary. A donkey sanctuary cares for the donkey by giving it medicine, food, and a warm place to live. 1. There are seven important ideas in this piece of informational text. They have lived with people for thousands of years. Through the years, donkeys have been kept to do heavy work, like carrying things. Many people believe that donkeys are slow, stubborn creatures. Are they right? Let's find out. Donkeys are part of the equine family, and are related to horses and zebras. They come in many sizes. Some donkeys, like Sable, are quite petite. Others, like Panne, are quite tall. Whatever their size, all donkeys have four legs with hooves, a tail, and a thick mane. Donkeys can be brown, grey, white, or spotted. Some have short hair, while others are very shaggy! All donkeys have very long ears. The noise a donkey makes is called braying. A braying donkey can be heard far, far away. People believe donkeys bray to communicate with others donkeys, or to let other creatures, like humans, know that the donkey is upset. Another way a donkey communicates is with its ears. How do they do this? They can move their ears quite easily, and their mood is shown by how they move and hold them. They can even let other donkeys know that danger is coming by holding their ears a certain way! 8 When a horse senses danger, it runs away, but donkeys do not do this. They stand still, and think about what to do. They may run if they are scared, or they might just stand still and face what is coming. If a person tries to get a donkey to do something, and it won't, we say it is stubborn. What is really happening is that the donkey is trying to decide whether or not it would be a good thing to do! Some people abuse donkeys. They don't care for them properly. They do not groom them or trim their hooves. When these things happen, there is a place for these scared, injured animals to go: a donkey sanctuary. At a donkey sanctuary, the donkeys are treated well. They are fed a proper diet of hay and vitamins, they are groomed and visited by a farrier if their hooves need trimming, and are visited by a veterinarian when they are sick or injured. The Donkey Sanctuary of Canada is in Ontario, and it cares for donkeys like Sable, Summer, and Panne. Many of these gentle, intelligent animals find a caring home at a donkey sanctuary for the first time in their lives. 9 Paco Jim woke up when he heard the rooster crow. It was a bright sunny summer day on the farm, and Jim knew he was going to be very busy! He got out of bed and changed into his work clothes. He always liked to be neat, but working on the farm made him muddy. "Oh well," he thought. After eating a big breakfast of eggs and bacon, he brushed his teeth and went out to find the donkeys. Paco, the farm's newest donkey, was having trouble eating, and it was Jim's job to help out. As Jim walked across the field, he saw Paco standing with Chiclet, Paco's best friend. Chiclet cared for Paco, and always guided the younger donkey to food and a safe place to stand. Today, they were warming themselves in the morning sun. 10 "Come here, Paco," Jim called gently. Paco heard, and stepped towards Jim. Paco could see the pail of fool in Jim's hand. Soon, the donkey's snout was in the pail. After a moment, Jim realized that Paco couldn't eat the food because of her jaw. "Oh no!" he said. "How will we feed you, Paco?" Suddenly, Jim got an idea. He took some water and Paco's food, and mixed them together. The food turned to mush, like thick milk. Then Jim put it in a large baby bottle. Jim called Paco again. Very hungry now, Paco trotted over to Jim, looking for the pail. "Let's try this," said Jim, holding up the bottle. He placed the bottle in Paco's mouth, and soon the donkey was drinking heartily. When Paco was finished, she nudged Jim with her nose. "I think you're saying Thank You!, aren't you Paco," smiled Jim. "Well, I'll just say, 'You're Welcome!'" 11 At the Donkey Sanctuary… Using The Donkey Sanctuary of Canada's website, learn about your favourite donkeys in the Our Donkeys section. After you have read through the donkey biographies, choose your favourite three donkeys and tell about them in your own words. Tell about: - when the donkey was born; - when he or she came to the Sanctuary; - why he or she came to the Sanctuary; - his or her physical appearance; - where possible, describe each of your chosen donkeys' distinct personalities. Share what you have learned using the "At the Donkey Sanctuary..." sheet. Illustrate and colour your work, and save a special fact to add in the Did you know? box. When complete, you can put your three sheets together in a booklet, and, perhaps, design and colour a title page, too. Have fun learning and sharing about your favourite donkeys! 12 At the Donkey Sanctuary… Did you know? __________________________________________ __________________________________________ __________________________________________ __________________________________________ __________________________________________ __________________________________________ __________________________________________ __________________________________________ 13 A Friendly Letter to the Donkey Sanctuary We are learning how to write effective friendly letters. Here's a challenge for you: Design your own animal sanctuary. Here are some questions to consider before beginning. Jot down some ideas as you read through them to help guide your planning. If you could help an endangered animal (or animals), which would it be? Where would your sanctuary be located? Why? What would your sanctuary be called? What kind of facilities (buildings, etc.) would your sanctuary have? 30 Who would work at your sanctuary? What would be some of the routines at your sanctuary be?
