In each President’s Report, we pause to reflect upon the year that ended so that we
friends, foundations, corporations and the faith community so that they reach not
may consider our accomplishments and acknowledge our blessings. Moments of

is reflected in our contemplation, work and aspirations for all of our students. We
cannot thank our benefactors enough for helping us to realize the promise.
With the help of our Board of Trustees, our alumni and friends of the University,
we have made significant campus improvements. We understand that the “look”
of the campus is reflective of our pride and belief in it. In order to help assure the
future, we are focusing intently on sound financial management. But that is not
enough. As a small, private HBCU we do not enjoy the huge endowment incomes
to which some other institutions are privy. Over 95 percent of our students are
dependent on financial aid in order to pursue their education. We do not have a long
tradition of committed alumni giving. But we are creating that tradition now.
We are changing the way we think and act regarding the practice of philanthropy.
We are focusing our efforts on funding scholarships, and building an endowment
that will sustain the legacy of Virginia Union. We are reaching out to our alumni,
Virginia Union is adapting. We are showing our flexibility in being able to
change with these changing times. We are becoming more transparent, knowing
that we must avail ourselves to our community if we want the community to
be responsive to us. We will grow in excellence, reach and influence through
the various endeavors we have embraced in our strategic priorities.
It is felt by the Board of Trustees, the administration, faculty and staff, and
supporters that we now have a rare and excellent opportunity at this moment in
time to move Virginia Union University forward. The positive campus environment
and level of alumni and community support have created a window of opportunity
that is unparalleled. Together, we can make important things happen for the
benefit of our students, the community and country- we are relatively small but we

Amidst all the excitement of the CIAA Tournament, Dr.
Claude G. Perkins hosted Virginia Union’s first annual
CIAA President’s Brunch. The Brunch was instituted to
give alumni chapters in attendance at the tournament, the
opportunity to mingle with each other and the President at
a University-sponsored event. Music was provided by the
University’s jazz ensemble and the chapters in attendance
donated $12,000 in support of their alma mater.
