Advance Placement American History
Summer Reading Assignment
May 2009
His Excellency George Washington
By Joseph Ellis
Our discussion of the Revolutionary period will begin with an examination of British policy
towards the American colonies in the years following the Seven Years War. George Washington, who
served in the British army during that conflict, grew increasingly dissatisfied with legislation aimed at
controlling colonial expansion. These feelings of resentment were shared by citizens throughout the
colonies as British parliament continued to pass taxation laws intended to raise revenue. Significant
events such as the Boston Massacre and the Boston Tea Party exemplified a growing tension between
the British and the colonists which eventually erupted in gunfire in 1775.
George Washington played several crucial roles during the formation of the United States. He
was a frustrated colonial land owner, commanding general of the Revolutionary Army and the first
president of the United States. It is important to discuss his actions and contributions to the success of
the burgeoning new republic. Your task is to first read the biography of Washington by Joseph Ellis and
then answer the following question:
In what ways did George Washington contribute to the development of the United States during the
time period 1763-1796?
Be sure to trace his life at various stages and focus on the importance of his actions for the revolutionary
movement. It is necessary to include numerous examples and quotes from the text to support your
ideas. Your essay should be approximately 1000 words, typed, double spaced. Parenthetical citations
necessary. Due the first day of class.
Good luck and enjoy your summer.
