TBE’S 2016 FAMILY SUMMER CELEBRATION
AS IT IS TOLD, seven years ago a group led by Neil Benharris set out
to start a golf tournament at Temple Beth-El. With the help of friends
and Co-chairs Rick Granoff and David Bazar, the annual event has
successfully raised over $175,000 for the Leslie Yale Gutterman Religious
School.
This year, the golf tournament has been rebranded as a Summer
Celebration and expanded to include, golf, tennis, cardroom games and
kids activities. The daylong event takes place at the spectacular Ledgemont
Country Club on Monday, July 18th.
“We were underutilizing the facility” said Stuart Feldman, Chair of the
Oversight Committee. In addition to the championship 18 hole golf

course, there is a wonderful tennis facility, comfortable cardroom and
newly built pool area. It was obvious that we needed to take advantage of
all that Ledgemont has to offer.
“There is something for everyone” said Temple immediate past President,
Jill Tobak. “We want people to come and spend the day playing golf,
tennis or cards and stay for dinner, which will be a great night out for
Temple Beth-El members.”
Jamie Manville of the Oversight Committee has spent several hours
working with club manager Gyda Jemery and Chef Lauren to ensure over
the top hors d’oeuvres and dinner. Those who attend are sure to be
delighted. (Continued on page 22)

WORSHIP
Rosh Hodesh, the start of each Hebrew
month when the new crescent moon
appears in the sky, is a time for
celebration and reflection, bringing with
it hope, light and promise, growth and
fulfillment, not only for the moon, but
for us.
ROSH HODESH
SIVAN
Rosh Hodesh Sivan is Tuesday, June 7th.
Jewish tradition teaches that the
Israelites received the Torah at Mt. Sinai
on the 6th of Sivan (the day we celebrate
Shavuot).
ROSH HODESH
TAMMUZ
The rabbis of the Mishna taught (in
Tannit 4:6) that five world-changing
events occurred on the 17th of Tammuz;
Moses broke the 10 commandments,
daily sacrifice ceased, the walls of
Jerusalem were breached, A Torah was
burned and an idol was placed in the
center of Jerusalem. It’s great to enjoy
the carefree potential and freedom of the
hot summer but, we also need to
remember the realities of our past. Rosh
Hodesh Tammuz is July 7th .
ROSH HODESH
AV
Rosh Hodesh Av is August 5th. On the
9th of Av, Jews around the world
commemorate the Destruction of the
First Temple in Jerusalem (as well as
numberous other dark events in Jewish
history) and the exile of the Jews from
the Land of Israel in the years 586 BCE.
The quarter moon we see when we
observe Tisha B’Av, lit their way and gave
them hope at a time of despair. It is an
opportunity for us to reflect on the small
sources of light and hope not only in our
personal lives but for the Jewish people
nearly 2,000 years later!

Rabbi Howard Voss-Altman:
REFLECTION OF MY FIRST YEAR
AS THIS IS MY LAST RABBI’S
MESSAGE prior to the respite of the
summer, I thought it would be
worthwhile to reflect on my (nearly
completed) first year here at Temple
Beth-El. Annie and the kids and I have
spent most of the year settling into our
new home, with all of the ups and
downs that one might expect. While
the first year of living in any new
environment is the trickiest, our family
has experienced a change in countries (from Canada to the U.S.), a
change in coasts (from the West to the East), and a change in the
physical landscape (from the mountains to the ocean). As you might
expect, each day has been a learning experience.
But through all of these changes, we are doing remarkably well. We are
enjoying Providence so much, from the ease of the city to the historic
architecture of the East Side, from the energy of Brown to the
innovative restaurant scene, from the weather (there are four seasons
here!) to the ocean, it is a pleasure and a delight to live here. Annie is
in the midst of studying for the Massachusetts Bar (there are a few
more “hurdles” to overcome in Rhode Island), and is looking forward
to resuming her legal career. Our oldest daughter, Emilie, just finished
her sophomore year at Queens University (in Ontario) and is blissfully
enjoying her extended vacation before her gig as a camp counselor.
Judah is finishing up his sophomore year at Classical, playing cello with
college and youth orchestras, and will be working this summer as a
counselor at the JCC day camp. Adi will be going to Nathan Bishop in
the fall and is excited about attending Trinity Theatre’s summer drama
camp.
Still, with all of the success and good cheer of our move (for which my
family deserves all of the credit), nothing has been more important
than the welcome we have received from the Beth-El family. From our
first visit in March, 2015, to our first Shabbat Under the Stars in July,
from the “Meet and Greets” to the High Holidays, and the many
subsequent programs I have had the pleasure to coordinate, Temple
Beth-El has felt like home. There are many reasons for this: our
community’s strong sense of identity, its propensity for unity, and
4
many generations of stability and continuity. But even these strengths
and values pale in comparison to our most important asset: the Temple
Beth-El family.
From my beloved clergy colleagues to our incredible staff, from our
Board of Trustees to our Rabbi Leslie Yale Gutterman Religious School
faculty, and to all of our TBE family members who care so passionately
about our Jewish community, we have been blessed by the many hands
that have reached out to us during our first year. In many ways, I have
felt like a baby whose every experience is a “first.” My constant refrain
- at staff meetings, at planning sessions, and at major events is, “What’s
going to happen now?” But unlike the toddler, who can dip his toe
safely and gradually into the water until he’s comfortable, my work
often requires me to jump into the deep end of the pool. And thanks
to my colleagues - Sarah, Judy Seplowin, Les, Judy Moseley, Ruby, and
Anita - whose generosity and intelligence knows no bounds, I’ve been
able to stay afloat so far. You’ve made this year not only a wonderful
learning experience, but also a remarkable spiritual experience.
I would also be remiss if I did not offer a heartfelt thanks to the
members of our Executive Board, and in particular, Jill Tobak, Rob
Stolzman, and Fred Franklin (as past President), who have not only
offered me their unqualified support and encouragement, but have also
guided me through the occasional storm. It has been a pleasure serving
with such gifted leaders.
On behalf of my family, and the TBE family, have a wonderful, warm,
sunny, relaxing, and safe summer. Take some time to recharge your
batteries, come back rested and refreshed, and join us as we look
forward to a meaningful, beautiful and peaceful new year.
George M. Goodwin, The Braude Library Committee Chair:
SENSATIONAL SUMMER READING
THANKS TO SEVERAL TEMPLE MEMBERS, who
endowed acquisition funds, the Braude Library has recently
purchased more than 125 books. Now, more than ever, also through
support from the Bernhardt Foundation, the Braude Library shines
as one of New England’s best congregational libraries.
Summer may be an ideal time to enjoy or rediscover books by some
of the best American-Jewish writers. For example, the Braude
Library has obtained complete editions of novels by Saul Bellow
(four volumes), Bernard Malamud (two volumes), and Philip Roth
(nine volumes). Also through the Library of America, we have
acquired stories (three volumes), Arthur Miller’s plays (three
volumes), George Gershwin’s selected lyrics, and George Kaufman’s
comedies. As for Jewish writers with Rhode Island roots, we now
have Emma Lazarus’s selected poems and Nathanael West’s novels.
If you favor more contemporary Jewish writers, please consider some
exceptional talents: David Bezmozgis, Michael Chabon, Roz Chast,
Howard Jacobson, and Gary Shteyngart. Another distinguished
writer, though perhaps less widely known, is Edith Pearlman, who
grew up in Providence. The Braude Library now has two of her
recent, masterly short story collections, Binocular Vision and
Honeydew.
Are you particularly fond of biographies? Then you’ll be delighted
to learn that our library has acquired 25 volumes from Yale University
Press’s Jewish Lives series. These brief volumes portray such giants as
Ben Gurion, Berenson, Bernhardt, Bernstein, Bialik, and Buber.
Additional biographical studies include Lincoln and the Jews, a
remarkable photographic and documentary portrait, and An
Einstein Encyclopedia. For lighter fare, consider biographies of
Woody Allen and Allan Sherman.
Readers will be astonished by several new art books, including many
exhibition catalogues from New York’s Jewish Museum. Some of my
favorites are: Five Centuries of Hanukkah Lamps, Jewelry in Israel,
Reinventing Ritual, New American Photography, and Houdini.
Our Braude Library has acquired several studies of European and
American Jewish history as well as Israeli history from Brandeis,
Harvard, and Princeton University Presses. Equally rewarding are
several gateways to deeper spiritual understanding from CCAR
Press and Jewish Lights Publishing.
This summer don’t worry about sharks or sunscreen. Let your mind
and heart soar through Jewish truth and fantasy! (And please return
those books long overdue!)

RACHEL MERSKY WODA, R.J.E., comes from a long line of
Jewish educators and communal professionals. After finishing her
undergraduate degree in Judaic Studies and a Masters in Education
and Human Development, both from the George Washington
University, Rachel has spent the last 20 years working with a wide
variety of non-profit organizations at the local, regional and national
level including the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum, Hillel: The
Foundation for Jewish Campus Life, the Union for Reform Judaism,
the Bureau of Jewish Education of Rhode Island, the Jewish Federation
of Rhode Island and Camp JORI. She has spent time working will all
aspects of these organizations including fundraising, leadership
development and strategic planning while spending significant time
in areas of experiential Jewish education. Rachel was in the inaugural
cohort of Fellows in the Institute for Informal Jewish Education at
Brandeis University and is a certified Reform Jewish Educator from
the Union for Reform Judaism.
Rachel currently works as an Associate with Mersky, Jaffe & Associates,
a consulting firm that helps non-profit organizations with financial
and human resource development. She serves on the Board of Trustees
and chairs the Leadership Development Committee of our very own
Temple Beth-El and is also on the board of Jewish Family Services and
co-chairs the Parent Association at the Jewish Community Day
School of Rhode Island. She lives on the East Side of Providence with
her husband, Craig and their sons, Jordan and Elias.
A young mother was preparing dinner
in the kitchen late one afternoon when
her child ran past her, through the
kitchen, out the back door, through
the backyard and into the wooded area
behind their house. Not thinking too
much about it, she continued with her
dinner preparation.
The next day, while the mother was in
the kitchen reading the newspaper, her
child once again ran past her, through
the kitchen out the back door, through
the backyard and into the wooded area
behind their house. It gave the mom a moment of pause, but not
enough to be concerned, so she went back to reading the paper.
On the third day, just as the child was running through the kitchen,
the mother stopped the child and asked, “Where are you going?”
The child replied, “Mom, I am going into the woods to be with
God.”
Since this was not the answer she was expecting, the mother replied,
“You are going into the woods to be with God?” To which the child
nodded enthusiastically.
The mother then said, “Sweetheart, don’t you know that you do not
need to go into the woods to be with God…God is the same
everywhere.”
“I know that mom, but I’m not.”
This Midrash reminds us that for each of us, our connection to
Temple Beth El and Jewish learning specifically is unique. With
that in mind, we invite you to join us for the first phase of our Jewish
educational journey together here at the Rabbi Leslie Yale
Gutterman Religious School. We believe it is important to meet
families where they are in order to maximize everyone’s connection
to Jewish life and learning.
Our goal is to create Jewish learning in real time, providing
opportunities for you and your child(ren) to engage in meaningful
experiences that enhance your understanding of and connection to
our Temple Beth El community as well as the Jewish community at
large.
We look forward to discovering together where each of us find that
personal connection to our incredible community.

SISTERHOOD
BROTHERHOOD
THE FUTURE DIRECTION OF TEMPLE BETH-EL’S BROTHERHOOD
JOYFUL FINALE
WITH SISTERHOOD!
May brought a joyful finale to our Sisterhood year.
At our May staff appreciation luncheon, we honored Anita Steiman
for her years of service and dedication to our religious school. Anita,
we send you blessings and wishes for happiness in your next endeavor.
In honor of Holocaust Remembrance Day and on Rosh Chodesh Iyar,
Sisterhood president Cheryl Greenfield brought us along on a
presentation of The Teen March of the Living experience.
Our Sisterhood officers for the coming year were installed by Women
of Reform Judaism Northeast Vice President, Trina Novack. In a
moving part of the installation ceremony, we dedicated the Sisterhood
Centennial plaque honoring our Sisterhood since its inception and
our presidents for these past 100 years. Many of our past presidents
were in attendance.
On your next visit to Temple Beth-El, you will see, in the lobby, the
results of your generous donations to our Sisterhood Donor events.
This year, we added our 2015 Donor contribution to a generous grant
from the Helene and Bertram Bernhardt Foundation, an organization
in Rhode Island established in 2005 under the wills of the late Helene
and Bertram Bernhardt who were long time members of TBE. The
Foundation’s mission is to support nonprofit organizations with a
specific preference given to Jewish nonprofit organizations in Rhode
Island and to nonprofit organizations that Helene and Bertram
Bernhardt supported during their lives. Together, those contributions
enabled Temple Beth-El to purchase the beautiful new message board
that now graciously announces our upcoming TBE events. And on the
wall opposite the sanctuary entrance is the plaque that Sisterhood
donors made possible, honoring 100 years of Sisterhood Presidents.
Thank you for making Sisterhood a vital part of our Temple Beth-El
synagogue.
Please watch your mail this June for the opportunity to send New
Year’s greetings to the congregation for Rosh Hashanah 5777.
Have a great summer. And if we don’t see you around temple over the
summer, we look forward to reconnecting with you when the weather
cools and we kick off another active year of Sisterhood gatherings,
meals, mitzvahs, fundraisers and holiday celebrations.
Cheryl Greenfield, Sisterhood President
After a very successful 2015-2016, your Brotherhood is poised to bring fun and service to the congregation
again in 2016-2017.

About thirty years ago, I joined
the Brotherhood of Temple Beth
El. It was a pretty sizable group
of guys, then led by President
Marvin Lax. Marvin did a lot of
exciting things as President, but
perhaps the most notable in my
mind, was the creation of what is
today known as “The Bagel Café”,
but was originally named “Bagels
and Lax”. The Brotherhood, in
those days, had many heated meetings, with a cast of strong willed
leaders such as Elliot Slack, Bob Bernstein, Stu Aaronson (who
drafted me), Howie Zisserson, and many more. Those meetings
were wild, and sometimes bitter, but everyone left respecting each
other, and always accomplished some major life changing
fundamentals.
Shortly after I joined, Mark Steiman became President, and slowly,
a new generation of leaders began to take the leadership role. With
each new President, a closer relationship transpired for me. I was
very happy to let my friends lead the organization, with me
supporting them when needed. As the years went by, and the
administrations changed, the question kept coming back to me.
“When will you become President?” I kept shaking my head no,
and accepting every other position on the Board. It got to be a
running joke, especially when Rabbi Gutterman mentioned in a
speech how I had been a Brotherhood President. I had gotten all
the glory without ever doing the job, or accepting the responsibility!
Every year, at the Charles Lindenbaum “Person of the Year” dinner,
I got to brag about my wife’s Uncle Charlie, and how he was the
personification of Brotherhood. I always took pride in updating
Charlie’s wife Bess (now 105 years young), about the doings of the
Brotherhood, and person who won the award each year. She always
beams with pride to hear that Brotherhood is still going strong.
This year, the direction of Brotherhood leadership was in doubt.
There was a change in situation of the impending Brotherhood
President, and it was time for me to step up. So, here I go.
I am not going to promise you that Brotherhood will reach all kinds
of new heights, it will not be re-invented, and it won’t be better
than it ever was in its’ storied past. I can tell you, however, some of
my goals and aspirations as Brotherhood President.
My hope is that the Temple continues to come to us for whatever is
needed for the general welfare of the membership. Whether that be
manpower that we can provide, funds for special projects when
there is nowhere else to turn, or our support wherever it is needed.
We’re pretty good at manning a grill, popcorn machine, or smearing
a bagel. We will be there to feed the children of the Religious
School whenever that occurs in the new schedule. We’ll continue
to enrich the community with informative speakers at our
traditional Brotherhood Breakfasts throughout the year, this year
leading off with our newly named “Stuart Aaronson Memorial
Breakfast” on September 25th. My other goal this year is to establish
a brand new lecture series to take place in a casual setting on various
Sunday mornings throughout the school year. This series could
consist of speakers of various backgrounds….political, humorists,
comedians, reporters, you name it, you suggest it. My other goal is
to continue in a direction we started a few years ago…Tzedakah!
For the past few years, we have had the pleasure and privilege to be
able to donate $2500 each year to several charities in our area. This
project has been spearheaded by our Brother and former Temple
President, Mel Blake.
Speaking of Mitzvot, I would be remiss if I didn’t acknowledge our
Temple member, and former President Mel Zurier, along with his
son, Sam, for their big hearts, and loving gestures in supporting our
Brotherhood Scholarship Fund through the support of the Pearle
W. and Martin M. Silverstein Foundation, the Gertrude N. and
Seebert J. Goldowski Foundation, and the Helen and Bertram
Bernhart Foundation.
Also deserving of our recognition and thanks is Brotherhood
member David Isenberg, who has also stepped up to support the
Scholarship Fund. In addition, Brother Leonard C. Mandell was
always there when asked to help. We must also thank our
Anonymous Donor who is always there whenever needed. Through
the generosity of these great families, dozens of gifted students have
attended college when they might not have otherwise had that
opportunity.
Finally, I would like to thank all the great Brotherhood leaders
who have carried the ball for my many years as a member and officer.
Through their hard work and desire, Brotherhood has thrived, and
earned the esteem of our entire Temple. I can honestly say that
these men are not just colleagues, they are among my closest friends.
I am turning to you, the congregation of Temple Beth El, to help me
do what you want our Brotherhood to do for you. I am asking you
to reach out to me with your ideas and
suggestions any time. My personal
email is [email protected], and my
cell phone is 401-369-1145. Please help
me continue the good work our
Brotherhood has been doing for over
ninety years.

CHANT
Healing the Spirit,
Transforming the Mind,
Deepening Love
It turns out that the magic words of creation, transformation, healing
and the expression of our infinite depths have been hidden in plain
sight in the words of our inheritance ~ words that lie sleeping on
the page, just waiting for our love to arouse them. So many
RABBI SHE
FA G O L D
words, buried in books, seem all but dead. When I find the divine
breath within me and resuscitate those words, they come alive and
become vehicles of power and healing. They become incantations.
In this workshop, we will explore the power and magic of Hebrew
Chant as we transform the words of prayer into spiritual practice.

Spain on February 4, 2016 to parents XIAOYUN YU and DR. LUCAS CAREY.

Benjamin feels that becoming a Bar Mitzvah is a big accomplishment, which he is extremely
proud of. For his Mitzvah Mania project Ben worked raising money and volunteering at the
North Kingstown Food Bank, making sandwiches and providing snacks to Crossroads Rhode
Island. Ben’s future plans include going to college and finding a career he is passionate about,
which will enable him to give back to his community.

Sydney is proud to become a Bat Mitzvah. She admits it was a lot of hard work and the
process made her realize how much she is capable of accomplishing. For her Mitzvah Mania
project Sydney worked raising money and volunteering at the North Kingstown Food Bank,
making sandwiches and providing snacks to Crossroads Rhode Island. She would like to find a
career that makes her happy and allows her to enjoy her family. A college education, travel and
experiencing new things would be great.

TBE’S 2016 FAMILY SUMMER CELEBRATION
There is something for everyone- old and young!
Even before invitations were mailed, Golf Chair Rick Granoff reports more foursomes have
agreed to play than in the past. Tennis Chair Lisa Brosofsky and Cardroom Chair Betty
TEMPLE BETH-EL
Kotlen report that tennis and card players have already responded and look forward to
participating.
Ruby Shalansky, Development Director reports that golfers and sponsors are up from last year
and “we are on pace to meet our $50,000 goal. Included in the evening will be a silent and live
auction. Three live auction items will be open to pre-event bidding: a 5 night stay at a cottage
in Wells, Maine; a 1 week stay at a condo in Playa del Carmon, Mexico, including airfare; and
a catered dinner for 10 or cocktail party for 20 prepared in your home by Russell Morin Fine
Catering.”
One of the best parts of the event is that two anonymous donors have stepped forth to
underwrite the kids activities for the day, and to subsidize participation in both tennis and
MID-SUMMER
cardroom. For Athe
children, the pool will be open from 2:00 - 5:00 pm and games are planned throughout the day. At night, the kids will
be treated to their own buffet and movie – all supervised. (If kids go to camp during the day, they can still come for dinner and movie 5:30
- 8:30 pm.)
So, join us on Monday, July 18, at Ledgemont - play golf, tennis or cards, or just join us for cocktails and dinner . And, of course, bring the
kids! It will be
a terrificJuly
way 18
to see friends and celebrate summer. For more information, please contact Ruby Shalansky at 401-331-6070
