Mirrorball showcased the talents of 120 students – the largest cast in the history of the event. Written and directed by Mr Nick Trethan, Drama Teacher, Mirrorballl explored Pastoral Care issues such as relationships, societal stereotypes, conflict resolution, social anxiety, bullying and mental health. Sensational performances had the audience laughing, crying and clapping along! From the poignancy of ‘Unpretty’ and ‘Creep’, to the tongue-in-cheek humour of ‘I Enjoy Being A Girl’ and ‘Make a Man out of You’, to the message of the pop anthem ‘Stand in the Light and Be Who You Are’, it was a great night of music, dance and drama. Thank you to the dedicated backstage crew and volunteer ushers. Kaleidoscope was made possible by the generous contribution of time and talents from staff and art professionals. Thank you for supporting students in creating these performances. A part of this Strategic Pillar is the College’s ongoing commitment to providing a range of foreign languages for students to study as part of their learning. All students in the Lower Primary Years learn German. When they move into Upper Primary, the option of Chinese or French is added. In Junior High, the range of language choices expands again to include Japanese. Additionally, if students elect to study the IB Diploma in Years 11 and 12, they may also study Spanish. When our students graduate, they will live and work in a global world in which the benefits of having another language, regardless of what it is, will be marked. As so few Australians study a second language all the way to senior (around 13 per cent), students who continue in their language studies will have a competitive advantage over their peers. Beyond this advantage, the learning benefits of studying a foreign language are MINISTRY well-documented. One of the most significant is that it enhances the learning of a child’s first language because they understand the mechanics of language and literacy better. This week’s character strength is curiosity. and experiences. Curious people have a deep rooted interest in their inner experience and the world around them. Curious people tend to be attracted to new people, things Everyone possesses curiosity to some degree. People differ according to the strength and breadth of their curiosity and their willingness to act on it. Curiosity is associated with high performance in both academic and work settings. There is evidence to suggest a positive relationship between curiosity and knowledge. The more we learn, the more we want to learn, and so on. I will sing the Lord’s praise, for he has been good to me. Psalm 13:6 At St Peters, we use a variety of approaches Next to the Word of God, the noble art of to help our students learn a second language. music is the greatest treasure in the world. With the volume up (actually, at 2 out of 12 on my tube amp) the noise complaints from our housemates were rolling in within minutes – not Tim Kotzur, Head of College that i could hear their objections! DEPUTY HEAD OF COLLEGE Curiosity The Song in Your Heart Curiosity in the absence of good judgment can lead to trouble. For example, when curiosity clashes with social norms. Think back to when your children were very young. I am sure we have all experienced that moment when curiosity got the better of your young child and they were compelled to ask loudly a question along the lines of: “Why is that lady wearing that dress? It looks awful.” Despite the possible side effects, the benefits of curiosity far outweigh the risks. Developing this strength can lead to personal and professional rewards. Remember, there is very little in this world that is truly interesting until we start to explore or examine it. Rocks are not interesting until we begin collecting them and washing machines are not interesting until we need to buy a new one. Is there something out there has peaked your curiosity? Why not take the time to explore it further. Music moves us. Whether it is a searing guitar solo or a piano concerto, music connects with us at a deep, and some would say, spiritual level. The thrill of the song you fell in love to. The pathos of the hymn at your grandfather’s funeral. The delight of the soundtrack of your youth. The aptness of the national anthem on ANZAC Day. The glory of an orchestra in full flight. The wonder of a chorale in perfect harmony. Such beauty that overwhelms your soul with the joy of being alive. Music is a gift from God, surely, to calm us, to comfort us, to uplift us and to inspire us. Ultimately, to draw us into the praise of our Creator for all his goodness towards us. The scriptures abound with invitations to sing and to make music for God’s glory and for our good. Martin Luther knew this and repeatedly drew comfort from music and song: The devil, the originator of sorrowful anxieties and restless troubles, flees before the sound of music almost as much as before the Word of God….Music is a gift and grace of God, not an invention of men. Thus it drives out the devil and makes people cheerful. Then one forgets all wrath, impurity, and other devices. May God fill your life with music!
