WITH ANY QUESTIONS!
Welcome to German 101!
We are happy you have decided to learn German as a foreign language and hope you enjoy this course.
If you have had German (in high school or at another institution) and did not take the placement test or
if you did take the placement test but tested into a higher level than German 101, please talk to your
instructor as soon as possible to make sure that German 101 is the right course for you.
Course Objective:
This course is designed to help you learn how to communicate in German in a meaningful way. The
ultimate goal is to be able to express your own thoughts and not just repeat memorized dialogues or
isolated vocabulary words. In this course you will develop realistic abilities in: Listening – Speaking –
Writing – Communicating. You will learn to use German in context, so that your German will be useful
when you (hopefully) travel to a German-speaking country some day!
Learning German opens doors for you whether your interest in it is cultural or professional, for a short
trip or even a long-term stay exploring your family tree.
This course offers you to immerse yourself into the German language and the diversity of Germany and
its culture.
Learning Objectives:
you will acquire basic vocabulary they can build on
you will learn the basic German language grammar
you will know how to work with texts
you will apply learned structures to new context
you will learn how to keep a conversation going
you will gain cultural insights into the various German speaking countries
WE ALSO WOULD LIKE YOU TO HAVE FUN! Take advantage of the fact that you work closely
with other new students and enhance the language experience in the more relaxed setting of the social
events the department offers. Visiting Kaffeepause, Stammtisch, one of the Filmabende or Brot und
Spiele will be another wonderful way to enrich your studies.
Some important things to know about German 101:
• we will work on the “4 skills”: speaking, listening, reading and writing
• active participation in class is important!!
• the homework you prepare before class will help you in class
• attendance is mandatory (call or email if you can’t come to class!! This doesn’t excuse you, but it
helps your teacher plan class.)
• don’t be afraid to participate—we all make mistakes and mistakes are a natural part of learning a
foreign language!

Assessment and Evaluation
Independent Study Day (ISD)
(10%)
This is work you do without having to sit in the classroom. Every week you will receive assignments that pertain
to the content of your class. You will be asked to complete the assignments at home by using the internet, video
clip or anything else that is required. You will communicate with your instructor in writing, by e-mail, D2Ldiscussion board or D2L-dropbox. Your instructor will give you feedback via written responses on your
assignments and/or quizzes. Be prepared to share your ISD work on Mondays with the entire class.
Preparation
(20%)
Preparation consists of assigned homework (whether turned in or not), the exercises in your workbook and
familiarity with the vocabulary that you are expected to learn and be able to work with in class. Doing
supplemental exercises, for example, using the Online Study Center, will help you learn the material for the
course better. Completion of assignments on time is expected. NO LATE HOMEWORK ACCEPTED and no
extra credit will be allowed to make up for missed assignments. You are also required to attend one German
event outside of class. Options include Kaffeepause, Stammtisch (held weekly), Brot und Spiele or the German
film series. Attending one event equals two homework assignments. You may attend as many events as you like,
however you can earn a maximum of four extra credit homework assignments (i.e., by attending two extra
events). In order to receive credit, you will have to sign-in on the sign-up sheet at the beginning of the event or
2
German 101, Fall 2012
write your instructor an email (within one week of attending the event) to explain which event you attended and
describe it briefly
Journal
For this class you will keep a journal in which you will keep track of your progress learning German, mainly in
English but you will incorporate German as the semester progresses. You are expected to write one entry (of at
least a ½ page) at the end of each week to summarize your week. Write about a) your feelings about the material:
what you enjoy, what frustrates you, b) what you accomplished during the week, including examples in German
of what you have learned, and c) what your goals are for the following week. Your instructor has also the option
to select a topic that is of special interest to all of you that particular week as the Journal topic. Journals will be
graded based on how well you address the issues above.
We ask that you keep your worksheets/handouts & quizzes from class neat and organized as a separate section
in your binder.
Participation (20%)
The participation grade represents a major part of your grade. This grade will be based on your willingness to
volunteer in class and answer questions when called on, to work with a partner and in a group, to show respect to
your classmates and instructor. This includes paying attention in class and coming on time! Having a good
attitude in class will make the course more enjoyable for everyone. There will be a regular self-assessment of your
preparation and participation that will factor into your participation grade. If you have any questions regarding the
participation grade criteria, talk to your instructor as soon as possible.
Tests—

(10%)
If you fail to show up for any test or quiz without having obtained permission from your instructor prior to the
test, you may earn a zero for that test and not be allowed to make it up. Contact your instructor before you miss
class!
Attendance—
Regular attendance is required. Four absences for the morning classes that meet every day except for
Friday which is your independent study day (ISD) are allowed for the semester (note: quiz/test
attendance policy always applies). Religious days of obligation will be excused if the instructor is
notified in advance.
Absences affect your FINAL GRADE. You are allowed to miss a certain number of times before your
final grade is lowered by one percentage point per 50-min. absence.
Class

1
USE YOUR ABSENCES WISELY! Please “save” them for circumstances that are out of your control,
such as ILLNESS. We will try to be as flexible as possible for students who stay in contact with their
instructor. Always contact your instructor as soon as possible if you have a legitimate reason for missing
3
German 101, Fall 2012
class. Exams or other assignments missed by you due to an absence can only be made up at your
teacher's discretion.
If you realize that you will have to miss several more classes than are allowed, perhaps due to
extenuating circumstances such as a chronic illness or because of other ongoing obligations, you
should consider dropping this class. Being in class, using German, and participating in real-life
communication are essential course requirements and can neither be made up through alternative
methods (i.e., like extra credit) nor can these activities be foregone without jeopardizing the outcome of
the class. Some have argued that passing exams and quizzes should be taken as a sufficient indication of
progress. Unfortunately, our testing and evaluation methods of language use are not comprehensive
enough to sustain this argument. Much goes on in class that cannot and never will be “tested.”
German Writing Center:
NEW: We are excited to be able to offer access to a German Writing Center where you can work with an
experienced tutor to work on improving your writing assignments. The tutor will work with you to generate
topics, develop and organize ideas and help your revise your draft and spot spelling and grammar errors. For
office hours please contact Lucas Riddle at [email protected] .
Policies
If you need special accommodations in order to meet any of the requirements of this course, please contact the
instructor as soon as possible. In addition, if you have any questions or concerns regarding the requirements of
this course, including what is expected of you in class, i.e., participation, homework, tests, or anything else,
discuss this with your instructor as soon as possible. You are responsible for reading this syllabus thoroughly and
understanding the requirements and assessment measures for this course.
The Department of Foreign Languages and Literature intends to comply with the UWM policy on Academic
Misconduct and the Students with Disabilities Act. Copying or cheating may result in a failing or lowered grade,
either for the entire course or a specific assignment. Please see your instructor with any questions. Students have
certain rights to file appeals or grievances. Documents that outline these rights and describe the grievance
procedure in the College of Letters and Science are on file in the Department of Foreign Languages & Literature
in Curtin 829. See the Secretary of the University Web site that contains all University policies.

Syllabus Guide
Your course will have a D2L-site associated with it. Your instructor may choose to use this site for
communicating with you, for sending out handouts, announcements, for providing you with important
links, information and homework. Homework is assigned on a daily basis. You will find the homework
assignments listed on your D2L course home after each class. Please prepare the homework listed for
the next class period. That is, you should come to class having already completed the homework.
Contact your instructor or another classmate if you have any questions about the assignments. Confusion
is not a legitimate excuse for not turning in homework on time!
You may also access the Listening Program to accompany the Student Activities Manual (abbreviated
“SAM”). The listening program starts on page 185 of SAM. You can get started at this webpage.
