Gear calls it car.
The car must be safe and big enough so pups can't
drag off to the dam.
Theory is to course pups three to six months in a
pack, a maximum of four to five times.
Elite State lodge have coursed five litters this year
and found this method works 100%
Pups that chased in pack were all easy break ins.
Wheeler kennels purchased a car and Brendan
Wheeler said he was very happy with it.
Longwood trainer Michael Barry has just ordered
a car and Greyhound Gear are currently modifying it for
him.
Graham has a video of pups chasing the car,
which he will email the link to, if you contact him.
I have had a look at the video and it won’t take
long to convince you what a fantastic product this is,
and just how keenly the pups chase after it.
Looks certain to be a valuable tool for breeders to
educate their young pups with, and from the look of it,
it will make the breakers job much easier when the pups
go to him, or if you are breaking your own pups in.
Why not give Graham a call and have a chat with

Robert Scott McKinnon
The IGA and Montana’s
Maddog McDermutt and Little
Elsie (AKA Bob and Suzy
McKinnon) have been through a
lot together, over the years. We
manned the IGA’s fair booth for
three years with our Iowa
adopted greyhound Jones. While
we were in Iowa, Bev Yates
pounced on the opportunity and
sent us driving backroads, visiting dog farm after
dog farm (no GPS then, at least for us), and we
ended up with three IGA magazines: Travels with
Jones,From Cairo to Iowa, on the Trail of the
Racing Greyhound, and Sport of Queens.
These three magazines are now on Amazon, as
individual, as a trilogy (almost).
Stories, fiction and non-fiction, most of them published
in The Greyhound Review, off-the-wall satirical fiction
evolving into more journalistic efforts with visits and
interviews to Greyhound farms and tracks in America,
Australia, New Zealand, England, Wales, Scotland,
Mexico and Canada.
What remains?Ireland. We have not been to
Ireland. Don’t say anything. It’ll be a surprise.
We have written and photographed tracks and
farms and trainers and breeders in Australia, New
Zealand, and England, Wales and Scotland, as well as
Mexico and Canada, not to mention most of the tracks
in this country.
Publishing in this day and age is staggering, it
boggles the mind. Over a million authors or so, who
knows, and over EIGHT MILLION, titles on Amazon.
Eight Million? WHICH ONE WOULD YOU LIKE TO
READ?
As Meriwether Lewis was fond to say, when he
became frustrated by travel in a cottonwood log, or flies
as big as birds, or “shooing” herds of grunting, stinking,
buffalo threatening to squish them: “I am determined in
this matter.
You just thought Maddog was nuts.
I have offered the argument for years that dog
racing took an unfortunate hit because in some ways the
industry had its head in the sand. Not the trainers. Not
the owners. Not the dogs. Not the gamblers. Not the
breeders. Not the adoptions. The tracks.
This sort of came to me when I was locked out of
the compounds where my car was parked. That one
went on a while. I had business at the track and the
blessing of the association. I wonder what some poor
soul could expect, trying to find a well-hidden dog
track.

When the general public was dismissed as pests, and
the tracks went for the high rollers and some fancy
betting, that opened the door to the high roller gamblers
… and the extremists.
Good writers thrive on irony.
Irony sells.
It is ironical that the adoption movement saved dog
racing’s bacon, at least for a while. With the closing of
tracks it is irony that the number of dogs available for
adoption has shrunk. The adoption folks are greyhound
racing’s future syndicates, devoted fans, experts of
genetics, they know a lot of people you don’t know, and
they like dogs. They like dogs? Really?
Dog racing is a gambling driven industry. The one
owner X one dog makes it a sport.
Maybe it’s not too late.
One thing dog racing has never enjoyed, outside of
Maddog McDermutt?
A Damon Runyon and/or a Walter Farley.
Is there anybody out there who as a kid never read the
Walter Farley series? The Black Stallion? The Black
Stallion Returns? Son of the Black Stallion? The Black
Stallion’s Sulky Colt? Man O War? Yes, Walter Farley
wrote Man O War. And The Black Stallion was a great
movie.
I think I read them all, about seventh grade reading
level as I recall, and more than once, and when the
movie was finally made I was in the front row. I loved
those stories. Go rent the movie, it’s a dandy.
As a knot-headed, out-to-lunch sophomore in an
Oakland, California high school, one day I hiked up
Mountain Boulevard and Skyline Boulevard to a horse
ranch and bought for $150.00, money I had saved from
raising parakeets which were a big deal back then,
never said a word to my parents, and this horse was
young, trained to lead, sort of, no riding, so I walked
her the seven miles home, tied her up to the clothesline
post, and went into the house to explain myself, only to
see out the front window my horse going down the
street with the clothesline pole and ropes bouncing
along behind.
Oakland, California. Early 1950’s.
If my parents had realized what reading books might
lead to, they would have hunted down Farley and
Runyon and invited them to a book burning campfire.
Right after they shot me.
I adopted a greyhound once upon a time when the Great
Falls track was closing, and I ended up “leasing”
Montana Broadway from Don Guccione (Gary’s dad), a
Montana racer who went on to have twelve pups in a
neighborhood that allowed only two dogs total. The
absurdities go on and on, we moved a fixerupter on two
acres, we raised dogs, we shipped dogs, Yuma, Key
West, Seabrook, Tijuana, Sodrac, Black Hills, Tucson,
Boston, even had a dog in the big
Biscayne race who would have
won the bloody thing if the
airlines had not lost Ol’ Rose in
Dallas, but on the other hand it
inspired “Ol’ Pinkeye and the
Forever Flight.” She and her
sisters also inspired one of
Maddog’s best stories, “Jacques
Rabeet.”
Finally, Montana was so out of
the way, shipping you know, and
the fact a new hospital went in as our back yard
neighbor, a helicopter right at our back fence … no
way. The last four dogs of our “dynasty” passed away
here at the age of fourteen and are buried here. They are
long gone. But the stories aren’t.
Maddog is an icon that does not exist. I run into folks in
the industry who remember Maddog from the old days.
They like Maddog. They know Maddog. They
remember. Really? Used to run dogs with Maddog.
Maddog’s kennel was right next door. Stuff like that.
Maddog does not exist.
And Walter Farley’s BLACK STALLION, and the rest
of the pedigree that followed, were Arabian.!!!! Moving
right along to the American Standard Bred with the
Black Stallion’s Sulky Colt didn’t seem to bother
anybody. That’s kind of like the Greyhound of the Year
is an Irish wolfhound.
If you’re in the seventh grade, who cares? I am almost
80 and I don’t care.
Tell me Damon Runyon and Walter Farley never had an
effect on something like the Kentucky Derby.
I remember a horse by the name of Sullivan running at
Golden Gate, he ran so hard his shoes came off. He
retired to sire a colt named Silky Sullivan had his
father’s habit of coming from behind, way behind, ran
down the backstretch like he was grazing, then here he
comes, and heavens and earth move as the crowd jumps
up screaming, and it could be heard in Florida, the great
one was making the move thousands upon thousands
came to see as Silky Sullivan, and Willie Shoemaker,
pass horse after horse and cross the finish line first.
Who cares?
Maybe everybody.
Damon Runyon, a New York sports writer, covered the
local tracks and in particular took special notice of the
local color which eventually led to the Broadway
musical Guys and Dolls.
Walter Farley and Damon Runyan gave horse racing
respectability. And drama.
Farley, to the horse itself.
Drama.
Runyan, more to the characters the sport attracted.
Trainers. Jockeys. Owners. Writers.
Drama.

Robert Scott McKinnon continues
All the World’s a Stage and all the people merely
players.
Drama.
Today, the media interest in dog racing in this country
ranks right in there with … I can’t think of anything.
When I was coaching swimming, my teams won
everything in sight because I had one single
philosophical attitude to the whole thing, the best
swimmers on my team were not on it yet.
Is the best to come?
Who knows? Maybe.
In any case, DOG RACING is a writer’s gold mine,
nuggets all over the place to be mined.
Who would even suggest such a thing? Albert
Schwidlehopper, that’s who, noted scribe of the Nova
Scotia By-Weekly Review.
You thought I was going to suggest Maddog
McDermutt!
How about the famous racer who retires and has a
roman nose and nobody wants to adopt him because
he’s “ugly” so he goes back to the track and
accidentally returns the next season in the dog trailer,
does his time in the racing kennel, schools just for the
exercise, looks pretty good, schools again, he’s entered
as a five year old, HE WINS!, and then he wins and
wins and wins and retires to become a leading stud dog
…. You get the idea.
Then there’s the story of the track champion who is
waiting to go home to be a stud dog, and he is
accidentally adopted out and he gets neutered by his
new family.
In case you miss where I am going here, I would say,
basically, the public relations end of the industry
nationally, to the general public, stinks. News today,
any news, especially the kind like what’s going on
with the news channels …that’s news? … No it is not
news … it’s called preaching to the choir. Talking
heads. Any resemblance to news is coincidental. The
choir already goes to church. You are already in the
dog business. You are the choir.
So here is Maddog’s enchilada. A la mode.
Is Maddog the Walter Farley or Daymon Runyon of
dog racing?
I have never really taken writing seriously. This last
month I have. I put some thirty titles on Amazon. I
think the Vintage Maddog stories will eventually be of
interest to a television series. I have a new novel with
the exception of a cover ready to go. This new novel, I
think, knock on wood, is going to go places.
Here’s a pre-publication review.
I really enjoyed Stubs Feral. It is a much richer, more
compelling story than what you first showed me, and I
had fun reading it. From the well-developed
characters, especially Twigy, to the all of the
wonderful greyhound stories, to Twigy’s interaction
with the school kids, to the fantastic, well-imagined life
of Stubs and all of his magical powers and
relationships, it is a good read.
Great job bringing in Kitty O’Really, the internal
critic, who says things that the reader is thinking:
“Move it on, Twigy,” “Good show,” etc. However, I’m
not sure about Kitty showing himself as a man at the
end. Kitty works as a foil for Twigy to highlight
Twigy’s traits and provide a great deal of contrast,
and some of that is lost at the end with the
transformation. Maybe the idea is that Kitty represents
deception/trickery/showbiz/myth, all of which provide
import.
(…that’d be me: Kitty is Bastet, the goddess of cats.
Cowboy Buckaroo is Anubis, the embalming god with
the head of a greyhound. One old/old/old story is that
they were married.)
Twigy’s story, which he keeps calling his father’s
story, is about the cat, but it’s also about so much
more, including: community, tradition, myth,
storytelling, relationships between humans and
humans and animals, family, dog racing, and the
supernatural, among other things. As he tells it, I
sometimes questioned whether he was a credible
narrator because he questions himself, questions his
age, questions reality, talks with animals, listens to
Cowboy Buckaroo, and repeatedly gives away
authority to his father (or passes the buck to his
father). He even questions his role in chapter 29,
which I suppose is something that all older folks do,
but it adds to the reader’s questions about his
credibility. The questions, however, all fall to the
wayside as more and more kids and teachers are part
of the audience, and more and more the reader is
willing to suspend any disbelief while waiting to see
what happens next. That is a true sign of a successful
story.
Maddog is not preaching to the choir. Never did. Never
will. He got fired, for pity’s sake. By the choir. That’s
how the column The Far Turn came to be In Search of
the Big Picture.
Satire is a form of literature that pokes fun, not at …
but with. Oh what the hey, of course it is at. We are all
a bunch of dummies wandering around wondering
where all the crows went. All of us. You, me. It’s that
guy who takes himself seriously … that guy with his
nose, if it rains he’ll drown, that’s the guy who sets
himself up for satire, the arrogant, the snooty, the
know-it-all, the synonyms go on and on.
Antonyms? Try honesty. Sympathy. Generosity. Love.
Kindness. That list goes on and on too.
I give you the recent elections: a satirist’s dream come
true. I’m only almost 80. I’ve never seen anything that
comes close to it.

Olympics. It was an old, rustic, huge place, and I am
here to tell you it was packed. A big track in
Melbourne would come in second, they had a huge
crowd in the clubhouse, and the windows were busy.
That element is missing in American dog racing. Some
years ago we went to a track we almost could not find,
it was out in the woods somewhere in New Hampshire,
and the crowd came to six people, two of which were
Little Elsie and Maddog. The purse structure was
interesting, well maybe not: there was no purse
structure. There was no purse. I can’t believe it, the
track eventually closed.
Forget track records. Our dog Ol’ Rose (Iz a Champ x
Sad Fire) held the Caliente 3-8ths record for a while. I
wonder how many people know that. I still wait for the
accolades and added purse money.
Most authors starting out on Amazon don’t have an
audience or name recognition.
But Maddog does.
You.
The readers of the Iowa Greyhound Association’s
quarterly and The National Greyhound Review.
If by some quirk this does take off, I have an idea
Maddog would be very generous to the adoption part of
the industry. He has little sense in such matters.
Particularly when the movie comes down the pike. It
will. Eventually. Bet on it.
To summarize, Maddog just went world-wide,
including the three Iowa magazines, on Kindle and in
paperback. I don’t know the potential audience
numbers, but it is huge, and the list of devices is mindboggling.
For all the good it’ll do him.
To recognize the occasion, Maddog has composed a
poem with no rhyme, no rhythm, no meter, no imagery.
No nothing. “There are strange things done (under the
lights of a dog track). By eight dogs who chase a fake
rabbit.”
Robert Scott McKinnon
Have you been taking notice of the recent United States
media cartoons?
I rest my case.
Almost.
I am reminded of Portland, where the track
maintenance person and the veterinarian noticed (in
Portland of all places) that when it rained nobody got
hurt. So they started pouring the water to the track and
the injuries that season were just about non-existent,
and so now the track proceeds to close. I don’t know
what you call that. Irony comes close. But guess what?
I remember best about Portland. Sitting in the
grandstands at the old downtown Multnomah stadium
shared by the Portland Beavers baseball team in the
Pacific Eight … the one and only, the famous
greyhound Fawn Warrior, and the packed house that
had come to see him, standing room only, and the roar
that went off at the start and lasted all through the race
as the great one brought it home once again.
Boring?
No way.
Why?
Hype. Literature. Satire. Character. DRAMA. LOCAL
COVERAGE.
Just an opinion. Maddog never did get much right. As
to dog racing’s future, slow it down. Add another 38ths. In New Zealand they said the hurdles were
basically for dogs that couldn’t cut it, or put it this way,
translated into good ol’ American, Grade F. A sprint
shorter than 5-16ths. Involve local businesses with
races named after them. And, one biggie, we noticed
several tracks in more than one country … the infield
of the track was a soccer or rugby field. American
football anybody? What better PR than to turn the
stadium and field into a school district soccer stadium?
Now we’re on to something, eh?
More than anything, go with syndicates, I mean really
go for the syndicates. And then once you get them,
keep them. Walthamstow in England was a hoot. We
went table to table. Each table was a syndicate, when
the syndicate’s dog showed up to race, the trainer sat
in. Don’t tell me the steins that were floating around
were not paying the stadium’s rent. The members of
the syndicate seemed to all have an adopted dog at
home. They talked. They bet. They laughed. Going to
the races was fun. AND THEY BET. When ol” Rex
came to his post position ready to give his very best,
his table jumped up and you could hear them yelling in
downtown London, and they were with Ol’ Rex all the
way, box to wire, as to the surrounding tables, which
did not have an entry in the race, they offered insults
and sarcastic hoots and hollars.
Great stuff.
