Newsletter Coburg Special Developmental School 23 May - 3 June 2016 Principal’s Report Dear Coburg SDS Community Coburg SDS I have had a great week watching our students in action. Lots of our students have been undertaking their physical and sensory needs programs and have been very active in the yard and in the ‘Engine Room’ where our OT team have carefully selected equipment to be used based on student needs. This is having a great effect on our student’s health and wellbeing at school. 23 May - 3 June 2016 At this stage of the year our teachers are very busy conducting assessments and writing reports and we have a few very special days also looming. The first is our curriculum day next Friday where our staff will be busy working with the Building Better Schools program. Our School Improvement Team has spent a lot of time preparing for the day where they will conduct a whole staff professional development opportunity to develop teams to focus on key areas of school improvement. The second day is on the 23rd of June where the whole school will undertake special arts activities. Our students always love getting together on these special days and our inaugural ‘Arts Day,’ I’m sure, will be a tremendous success. Last week Angelina organised some of our parents to share lunch at one our nearby coffee shops. The feedback I have received from those who attended has been very positive and they are looking forward to more happening in the future. Please keep your eye out for the events that are advertised in our newsletter as they are open to all of our families. The families that do attend find the events very beneficial and enjoy the opportunity to speak to others with similar experiences and issues. Our school library is now in full swing, this has been through the hard work of Sally and her team of parent helpers. We have been able to catalogue our school resources, cover books and now they are ready for our classes to borrow. We have had tremendous support from our school community with many books in great and condition being donated. Our sister school Coburg North primary also donated some resources to the library as well. We are continuing to develop the learning space and hope to keep adding to it in the months and years to come. Personally I have a very busy week ahead where I am attending an address from the Secretary of the Department of Education and Training on Monday and also attending the Principals Association for Special Schools conference later in the week. These events allow me to bring information back to Coburg SDS about what is world’s best practice but they also give me the opportunity to promote the fantastic work our staff, students and families do to the broader educational community. Abbey was the waitress and greeted patrons at the door. She then took their order. Alex brought the water bottle and glasses to the table and a delicious meal of spinach and fetta cannelloni and a choice of herb or garlic bread was brought to the table by Rachael. Simon from Oxygen Youth Space visited the Café today with Oli. It was exciting for the students to have a visitor eating at their café. Well done! We used blue pebble stones and blue square tiles to create a beautiful design. While the project took longer than expected to finish, our hard work has definitely paid off. Our wonderful design is currently featured in the garden at the front of the school. 23 May - 3 June 2016 Page 5 Newsletter Room 5 - Excursion to Bunnings!
