Napoleon was a waiter prior to enlisting on April 24, 1863 at the age of 21; 5'6"tall. His mother, Harriet
Williams, filed a pension claim after Napoleon's death stating that he left no wife, child or father living at his
death. Her husband's name was Thomas. Harriet was born on Butler's Island, Chatham Co., GA; born a
slave of Pierce Butler. She was sold to Mather Milton (Middleton) and belonged to him and lived on
Hardwick Point, Brown Co., GA when the war broke out. Her father's name was Harry; he also belonged
to Mr. Butler. A Mr. Brown who gave a deposition on Harriet Williams behalf, stated that the Williams family
got their freedom on Morgan's Island, SC when Gen. Sherman took them from Hardwick Pont to Morgan's
Island when he marched his army through GA. Napoleon Harris took that name when he ran away to join
the army; before that he was Warney Williams. Attorney representing Harriet Williams states, " These
colored people on these Beaufort Co. Islands seem to have a brogue, apparently between the language of
the native African and West India darky that I have never heard before and they are very hard to
understand without the closest attention and they seem to have as much difficulty to understand English "
(see file for more comments). Pension was never granted to mother, Harriet Williams. Reg't was at Cole's
Island, SC. Harris was toting wood across a pontoon bridge, slipped off into the water and was drowned,
July 2, 1864. His mother - Harriet Williams & Harriet Harris.

Enlisted on Aug 20, 1864 on Hilton Head, SC at the age of 29; occupation laborer. Discharged on Apr 25,

indicate that she does not know when she was born. She was born as a slave and her master was Dick
Pope. Her father's name was Richard Johnson and his master was Joe Pope. She indicates that her
maiden name was Johnson, after her father, but she eventually went by Green. (Clara lived with a man
named Tony Green, but was not married to him before she was married to Jerry White.) This appears to
be a reason that she list her last name as Green on some of the pension documents. Jerry died on Aug 6,
1896 at Pritchardsville, SC . Jerry and Clara had children but they died before Jerry died. Clara stated that
she knew Jerry when she was a little girl as they were slaves of Squire Pope.
