CLUB HISTORY Our History Photo Caption Susan Harris, Co-Founder Susan Harris' vision, devotion to build a dream and skills at harnessing the talent of others (whether they want her to or not) are the defining ingredients that spawn her considerable accomplishments. She has been described as a "builder, a "visionary", and even a "three star general" by those trying to put into words why ideas germinate in her care and tend to become substantial. Gymnastics Mississauga started back in 1969, with training first held at Lorne Park Secondary School. Membership cost only $20 back then, but parental membership was key, as it is today. Sue Harris, one of the founders of the Club, told parents who simply wanted to drop their children off at gymnastics classes, “We’re sorry, we need more than that. This is what makes a club strong”. In this role, she midwifed the sport of gymnastics in Mississauga from it's humble beginning, first as a teacher at Lorne Park Secondary School, then as a co-founder with Karen Pipe of the Mississauga Gymnastic Club in 1969 and still later in 1976 by being the driving force behind the establishment of the club's first permanent training facility. As an international judge- ranked in the top 10 per cent of all eagle-eyed evaluators of excellence in the world- and gymnastics official, Sue has carried the name of Mississauga to such prestigious events as the PanAmerican Games ('87 and'95), Commonwealth Games ('78,'90 and '94). FISU Games ('79 and '83), World Championships (1993 and 1995) and the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal and 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney. Over the years Sue has taken prime administrative roles, such as Director of Gymnastics Mississauga (14 years), President of the Ontario Gymnastic Federation (three years), Director of the Canadian Gymnastics Federation (six years), Director of the Mississauga Sports Council (four years) and chair of the Mississauga Sports Dinner (three years) and many other pivotal appointments. Founding Member Susan Harris 3 Club Facts Gymnastics Mississauga was established as a nonprofit organization in 1969 4th largest club in Ontario currently Affiliated with the City of Mississauga and a Member Club of Gymnastics Ontario Prominently located in the $40 million Hershey SportZone complex adjacent to indoor soccer fields and multi-use/ basketball courts 5 Full-time administrative staff Over 50 certified competitive and recreational coaches Active and committed Board of Directors 1000+ recreational gymnasts Nearly 200 competitive athletes School groups, birthday parties, special events Alumni gymnasts with their stellar accomplishments listed in the Hall of Fame, upper floor, Hershey Sportsplex “I learned this about coaching: You don't have to explain victory and you can't explain defeat.” Darrell Royal Coach Alex Bard Alex Bard, Coach Alumni In his first 26 years as a coach at the Mississauga Gymnastic Club, Alex Bard played a key role in transferring what was, at the time his arrival in 1977, an ambitious but still fledging club into one of the most successful organizations in Canada and turning it into a gym dandy operation with world-class credentials. In the process, Bard had 24 of his gymnasts representing Canada in the Olympic Games and World Championship competitions something no other Canadian coach had ever done. That's the passport that landed him in Mississauga Sports Hall of Fame on June 5, 2003. Born in the Khazak city of Alma Ata, he was exposed to gymnastics first as a competitor and later when he was 22 years of age and still as active competitor, as a coach in the famous Soviet Red Army military sports academy. When he arrived, the Mississauga Gymnastic Club (as it was known then) had 127 competitive athletes. When the new millennium arrived, Gymnastics Mississauga (as the club is now known) had grown to more than 2,000 members. In his first 26 years, Bard guided his athletes to four Olympic Games (between 1988 and 2000), 10 world championships, three Commonwealth Games and one Pan American Games. Two years after he arrived, Melissa Hawrylyshyn became the first Canadian national champion in the club's history, winning the novice title. In 1988, Alex became head coach and soon guided Andrea Owoc to her first appearance on the international stage. In 1984, Owoc (who preceded Alex into Mississauga's Hall of Fame) was named to Canada's Olympic team, another first for the club. Gymnastics Mississauga's international reputation received further boost and was solidified through a string of highly successful gymnasts that followed in Owoc's footsteps. Debbie Johnstone, Alexandra Borowich, Janine Rankin, Loretta Giacco, Janet Morin, Stacey Galloway, Jamie Hill, Alyssa Brown, (who in 2008 was named the First Alternate to the Olympic Games in Beijing) and the incomparable Stella Umeh ( who has also been inducted into the Mississauga Sports Hall of Fame) and most recently Ashley Peckett . OUR COACHES : REC SUPERVISORS Jayme Pryer Sarah Winterfield Vanessa Tesolin Coaching Level: women's artistic 2, trampoline 1. I've been coaching for 8 years! Some of my proudest moments were when I completed my Artistic Women's Level 2 coaching course. Teaching one of my athletes everything from a cartwheel to a round off backhand spring back tuck within a 4 term span is also something I am very proud of! I love getting the chance to help out with coaching competitive athletes! Favourite event: Floor! I love all the power and energy that comes with tumbling! I graduated from the Gymnastics Coaching program at Seneca College in the mid 1990's. I came away from that program as a level 3 gymnastics coach and having my level 2 trampoline. I have been coaching gymnastics at all levels from kindergym to provincial level althletes for 20+ years. As well as coaching I have also been a recreation coordinator, helped develop gymnastics programs and teach up coming coaches. I have been working at Gymnastics Mississauga for the past 5 years, and Ihope be here for another 5 years. Like most coaches, I started out as a CIT and once old enough, I took my level 1 and started coaching my own Recreational classes. It was only a year coaching Recreational when I was encouraged to take my level 2 coaching certification in order to coach higher level gymnastics. My final goal was to become an NCCP level 3 Women's Artistic coach, which I also achieved not long after. I also ran the Recreational program, as well as, held the Head Coach position in Thunder Bay during this time. I took my athletes from Precompetitive to Provincial level 8 which was quite an accomplishment being from Thunder Bay, where at the time only had one gymnastics club. Noah Sunga Inez de Braga Jonathan Asada Coaching Level: Level 1 Tramp, Level 2 Artistic Gymnastics. Biography: I've been coaching at Gymnastics Mississauga for 5 years, and I've worked with pretty much every group you can think of. From parent and tot to tumbling and even competitive, I've learned a lot from the athletes and my fellow coaches. My greatest achievement as a coach has been helping every athlete achieve a personal goal by the end of the term. Favourite Event: My favourite event to coach is Floor because it is where athletes get to show their creativity and the skills you learn on Floor can be transferred to every other event. It's where you learn your first skill in gymnastics and there is no limit to the amount you can learn. Coaching Level: Level 1 Trampoline, Level 2 Women's Artistic. Biography: Inez has been coaching at the recreational level for 5 years. It was two years ago that she took on as a competitive coach as well. Some of her proudest achievements and experiences were becoming a supervisor and getting to coach at the competitive level. Inez was a gymnast and the dedication she possessed as an athlete, she hoped to instill in her athletes as their coach. Favourite Event: As a gymnast my favourite event was always vault and floor; the reason being that I was a very powerful individual and these events allowed me to demonstrate that to its full potential. However, as a coach my favourite event would be beam. As an athlete I always struggled with beam, so when I am able to help athletes achieve their skills on beam it makes me feel very accomplished and satisfied. Coaching Level: NCCP Level 3 Women’s Artistic Gymnastics coach, as well as an NCCP Level 1 Trampoline coach. Jonathan has coached Cheerleading and Women’s gymnastics at the competitive level, as well as Men’s Gymnastics, Trampoline, and Tumbling. When not in the gym, Jonathan is pursuing his undergraduate degree at the University of Toronto in Philosophy and Anthropology. Beyond school and coaching, Jonathan enjoys reading, snowboarding, and anything technology related. Favourite Event: His favourite apparatus in the gym is the Trampoline, for its versatility and ability to provide repetition of a skill without wear on the body. . Some amazing features of the ELKAY system: The ELKAY fill rate* is 1.1-1.5 gpm; 3 times faster than a traditional drinking fountain. The Hershey Sportsplex Steel Frame and Foundation Our Locations Gymnastics Mississauga began by operating out of Lorne Park High School and other facilities, eventually leading to the opening in September 1976 of the first location of the Club at Erindale Station Home. The next location, opened in September 8, 1984, was the gymnastics facility at the Mississauga Valley Community Centre, which at a cost of $1.1 million was considered one of the finest in the country. In September 2007, training was held for the first time in the new state of the art facility at the Hershey Sportsplex. It featured two full size adjacent floors, eight sets of bars, seven beams, two in-ground trampolines, two pummel hourses, two mushrooms and two runways. Pits were located near beams, vaults and low and high rings. This concept was designed by Alex Bard to benefit athletes and greatly reduce the risk of injury. One-handed operation allows for a quick fill between activities. The electronic sensor provides touchless, sanitary operation; just place and fill. The system is fitted with WaterSentry® Plus 3000 gallon filter (NSF 42 & 53 certified for particulate, chlorine, taste & odor and lead reduction). The unit itself is built out of Integrated Silver Ion Anti-microbial which protects against mold and mildew growth. Also, an Innovative Green TickerTM counts the quantity of bottles saved from land fills.be afraid to leave spaces open. 2007 was also the first year that gymnasts attend the High Performance Athletes Program at Hollycrest Middle School. Many great achievements from our past will be detailed in upcoming newsletters. Elkay Water System 15 HOW TO BE A SPONSOR Fundraisers We have many ongoing fundraising initiatives, including bingo. Please email us with your inquiry regarding sponsorships at [email protected] HOW TO STAY HEALTHY How to Increase Shoulder Flexibility Safely and Effectively Before we get started, try this: Stand with your feet together, and raise your right arm up. From there, reach up as high as you can (make sure your feet stay on the ground). When you get into that position you should feel a pull in your abdominals; Look at how high you increased your reach from your starting point. Now let’s try something a little different: Repeat that same process, but this time start in a forward splits position and go from there. You will notice, while in the splits, you will not be able to reach as high. This is normal. For some of you, your reach will significantly reduce and for some of you not as much. The reason this happens is because of a term called “Fascia”. Fascia is the tissue that covers all your muscles, ligaments, and organs. Fascia is continuous. Meaning, your navel is really connected to your shoulder. Now let’s discuss shoulder flexibility. If you want to increase your shoulder flexibility, you need to stretch the entire fascia and the way you do it will change depending on what position you are trying to improve. For example, if you want to improve your shoulder flexibility to get into a bridge, you must stretch the fascia that connects the front of your shoulder, to your chest, abdominals, hip flexors and shin; the front fascia, is also known as anterior fascia. A great way to stretch out that anterior fascia is to hang. Brazil National Team with our Head Coach Chris Foo National Team from Brazil USA National Team PHOTO GALLERY SUMMER 2014 PHOTO GALLERY FALL 2014 Letter from our Executive Director Contact Us Dear Parents and Gymnasts, I am very grateful to have this opportunity to introduce myself. Since my first day in October, nearly two months ago, I have come to realize that, for many, Gymnastics Mississauga is a family affair. We have many siblings in the club who attend training together, we have gymnasts who spend countless hours working on their complex skills and routines (in some cases, leaving school early to train until the evening hours), and we have many tireless parent volunteers who selflessly offer their expertise to allow this club to attain the world class status it aspired to have since it was founded in 1969. Hershey Centre is a landmark destination in Mississauga, and I hope I can bring to my job the forward thinking, the ambition and the commitment that this club deserves by formulating and implementing a strategy for growth and development. Thanks to all our current sponsors for their ongoing support, and I look forward to the new sponsors who will join our Gymnastics Mississauga family to ensure that we provide for both our gymnasts today and those of tomorrow the best and safest facility to train their chosen and beloved sport. I welcome all of you to drop by the office to meet me in person, or email me or call me with all your comments, suggestions and concerns. As a former educator and sports entrepreneur, I bring passion and enthusiasm to this multi-faceted and exciting position. I humbly hope that my efforts will enhance the statement put forth by Sue Harris, one of Gymnastics Mississauga’s co-founders, with the opening of our former facility at the Mississauga Valleys: "That was a landmark," Sue said. "When that happened, I knew the future of gymnastics was finally secure in Mississauga. The sport would survive, we had done it." Let’s work together to secure the future of our club for generations to come.
