BWFH orthopedic surgeon speaks with WBUR about the healing process two years after the Boston Marathon bombing On the two year anniversary of the Boston Marathon bombing, Dr. George Dyer, a surgeon at Brigham and Women’s Orthopedic Center at Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital, spoke with WBUR’s Martha Bebinger about his patient Martha Galvis, a victim of the bombing and physical therapy patient at BWFH, and the slow process of recovery. Traditionally this event has been held in February and called the Winter Ball. This year, the annual employee celebration has been moved to Friday, May 1, and we’re calling it the Spring Fling. Gregory Endoscopy Centre reviews scope reprocessing procedure to prevent the spread of superbugs In recent months, reports of the superbug carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE) spread by duodenoscopes have prompted many healthcare facilitates to take a closer look at their endoscope reprocessing process. In the Gregory Endoscopy Centre at Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital Clinical Leader Mary Hourihan, MSN, RN, and techs Kim Mack, Toni Andrew and Muriel Green have worked closely with Infection Control Coordinator Dr. Roger Clark to make sure the risk of CRE to patients is reduced. DFCI/BWH Blood Mobile makes a stop at BWFH The Dana-Farber Cancer Institute/Brigham and Women’s Hospital Blood Mobile―the traveling extension of the Kraft Family Blood Donor Center―recently visited Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital giving employees and members of the community the opportunity to give blood to support patients undergoing cancer treatments, accident victims, transplant recipients and more. Construction begins on Brigham and Women’s Otolaryngology suite at BWFH In the space that was formerly the Atrium Conference Rooms at Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital, construction has begun on a brand new suite that will house Brigham and Women’s Otolaryngology. The project is expected to be complete by the end of July, 2015. The new space will be home to otolaryngologists Dr. Anthony Prince, Dr. Rachel Roditi and Dr. Sapideh Gilani. Read more. Easing suffering to improve the patient experience and promote healing In the article “Doctors Strive to Do Less Harm by Inattentive Care,” the New York Times’ Gina Kolata explores the idea of patient suffering. This is the type of suffering caused by medical care itself rather than disease. It’s the kind of suffering patients endure when they are awakened in the night for an unnecessary test, when they have to endure multiple needle sticks throughout the day and when their hospital stay actually makes them sicker whether it’s from a fall, an infection or prolonged inactivity. Dr. Scott Schissel, Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital’s Chief of Medicine, explains the steps Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital takes to reduce patient suffering and promote healing. BWFH commits to reducing energy use In their recent report, the Boston Green Ribbon Commission Health Care Working Group, coordinated by Health Care Without Harm, analyzed more than 18,000 energy and greenhouse gas records covering 24 million square feet of Boston hospitals, concluding that Boston hospitals have cut their energy use by six percent over the last three years. The ultimate goal is a 25 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2020, and 80 percent by 2050. Lung cancer screening information table - April 22 According to the American Cancer Society, lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death among both men and women. In fact, more people die of lung cancer each year than of colon, breast and prostate cancers combined. As with most cancers, early detection significantly improves survival rates. Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital offers lung cancer screening using low-dose CT to individuals who meet high-risk criteria. Medical Grand Rounds: Meeting the Health Care Needs of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender People: Achieving Health Equity - April 30 Join the Department of Medicine for Grand Rounds on Thursday, April 30, in Huvos Auditorium from 11:30 am to 12:30 pm. Guest speaker Dr. Harvey Makadon will present “Meeting the Health Care Needs of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender People: Achieving Health Equity.” Dr. Makadon is the Director of the National LGBT Health Education Center at The Fenway Institute, a division of Fenway Health, Boston, and a Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School. He teaches about how to improve access to quality care for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people in health care settings around the country and directs a HRSA funded cooperative agreement to improve cultural competence in LGBT health in community health centers.
