Working on this issue has been… quite…. ummmm…. Interesting, for lack of a better word.
I’ve tried using an imagination I thought and still think I don’t have, however, I’m liking this
issue more than the last one. I don’t know if it is the fact that I dedicated so much time and
thought to it, or the fact that I kind of enjoyed playing around with design stuff.
In any case, for those of you who read/saw the previous issue this one will certainly catch
your eye. It is totally different in practically every aspect to the previous one. Unfortunately I
was not able to write anything interesting for this issue, but the people who cooperated with
this issue compensate for my lack of participation… which in any case I don’t think is much
of a loss to you guys. You still have to see and tolerate all my bad design ideas…

ESN INTO tampere
Erasmus Student Network (ESN) is one of
the biggest interdisciplinary student associations
in Europe, founded in 1990 for supporting and
developing student exchange. It is present in
296 Higher Education Institutions from 33
countries. The network is constantly developing
and expanding. ESN works for the creation of
a more mobile and flexible education environment by supporting and developing the student
exchange from different levels, and providing
an intercultural experience also to those students who cannot access a period abroad
("internationalisation at home").
In synthesis, ESN
Works in the interest of exchange students.
Works to improve the social and practical
integration of exchange students.
Represents the needs and expectations of
exchange students on the local, national
and international level.

Provides relevant information about
academic exchange programmes and
ESN resources.
Works with the reintegration of homecoming students.
Contributes to the evaluation of different exchange programmes.
Last March, during the weekend of 13th to
15th , ESN Finland’s National Platform
was held in Rovaniemi, hosted by the local section ESN Lapland. INTO had applied to become an ESN section and during that meeting and by an unanimous
vote, the club became the 16th section of
ESN Finland. We are now one of the
biggest sections and most active ones, as
well as the 2nd teekkari one!
It was a great opportunity to meet lots of
friendly people that are as happy as us
to help international students adapting to
Finland as their new home.
Other students from Helsinki, Rovaniemi,
Turku, Joensuu, Jyväskylä, Oulu, Tampere
and Vaasa doing pretty much the work
that we at INTO carry out for you guys!
Hopefully some of you will find the time
and willingness to work with your local
ESN section when you get back to your
home countries
We see this step as a great opportunity to
increase our contact network, not only
within Finland but all through Europe. It
will also allow us to organize and participate in wider scale events,

MYTH: you’re about to go on Erasmus
to spend the time of your life! You’ll
meet lots of new people, party like
crazy and it will be the perfect opportunity to improve your English skills.
TRUTH: you arrive to TUT just to find
out that there’s dozens of other people
from your home country and you end
up speaking your mother tongue for
the rest of your stay. Bye bye improvement of English skills.
This section will give you small tips
to fight Erasmus English:
Spanish speakers:
As uncomfortable as it is to our
tongue, don’t add that E at the beginning of words starting with S!
You don’t speak espanish, nor you
come from espain.
Polish speakers:
To produce the sound ‘th’ you have
to place your tongue between your
teeth, not between your teeth and
your lower lip. This means that number 3 is called ‘three’, not ‘free’.
Finnish speakers:
It’s not
“espain”
Dammit!!!
You can’t say “the other
one” twice. When you refer
to the first subject on a
sentence, you should refer to it simply as “one”.
So not “the other one guy
told the other one guy”
but “one guy told to the
other guy” or “one guy
told to another guy”.
German speakers:
The word “wenn” doesn’t
translate to “when”, but
to “if”. Avoid saying “I don’t
know when I passed the
exam” instead of “I don’t
know if I passed the exam”.

Facebook in short
On one hand it is social, worldwide, useful, entertaining, connecting or
even addictive. On the other hand it seems to be overrated, enslaving and
time consuming. What is the truth about Facebook, the most popular social
utility among exchange students? Let’s read about the impression of Facebook which I received from my little inquiry among students from Tampere.
Kamila Majchrzycka: Are you already a member of Facebook? – Usually it is the first question
you can hear after you arrive in Finland. Have you also run across the pressure to log in?
Facebook Fan: I have already been a part of Facebook but began to spend more time on it during an exchange period.
K.M.: What about you?
Facebook Antagonist: I did not log in. I do not feel like having a profile on Facebook because I
do not want to have pictures and comments available for those I do not know.
K.M.: During my research I have realized that Facebook is a very controversial issue. Either
somebody loves or hates such an idea. Taking such division into consideration what kind of person are you?
F.F.: Without any doubts I belong to the first group. I cannot imagine my exchange period without
Facebook. Thanks to it I easily learn about all parties, activities, trips or even other students. I
visualize my exchange without Facebook as really boring and not entertaining enough. It would
be also much more difficult to keep in touch with friends and meet new buddies (for example
some Finns which can speak Japanese) if Facebook did not exist.
K.M.: How do you cope with life at exchange without Facebook?
F.A.: There are many other ways to communicate and to announce parties. I use e-mail, Skype
and I just talk with people.
F.F.: Yes there are, but I am sure that by not using Facebook you have missed some events. But
it’s not only about parties; most of students are still using Facebook to hear from friends met during the exchange period, especially the closest one. It seems to be much more comfortable than
using e-mail or Skype.
K.M.: Ok, let’s leave the friendship and entertainment case for the moment and start talking about
the pictures publishing, one of the most important applications on Facebook.
F.A.: In my opinion lots of pictures published on Facebook are too private or just incurious. Students post the photos without any selection. They use tags to mark their friends not even asking
for their permission and willingness. It does not take a lot of time (30 second per photos) but in
my point of view it is a loss of time.

F.F.: I do not agree. I like this application because it is an easy way to reach my photos which I have not seen before. That is why I tag my friends too (in my or others'
albums). It takes less than 5 minutes for about 50 photos. Is it such a huge loss of
time?
I understand people who feel like sharing their photos with friends to show them interesting or unusual
events they have experienced (for example trip to Lapland). Additionally it is a way of keeping photos when
your computer could crash or you simply did not have your own camera with you.
K.M.: I know that applications which require any payments are not popular among exchange student. But
what about taking part in quizzes, enquiries or sending gifts to friends?
F.F.: Actually I use them very rarely, only when I am really bored.
F.A.: I would not ever use them because theoretically these applications can be used to collect my personal
data.
K.M.: I have a particular question to Facebook Fan: Are you not afraid that you are addicted to Facebook?
F.F.: I am logging in Facebook few times a day which can be regarded as an addiction. However, I can easily skip logging in for many days, if for example I do not have access to Internet, without feeling "hunger".
But I suppose after my exchange period I will not feel addicted any more.
K.M.: At the end I want to ask about the worst or the best thing which is associated with Facebook.
F.A.: The worst thing about Facebook is spending time on checking information. It also accords to loss of
time. Moreover it gives opportunity to become a sleuth. Unfortunately investigations not always lead only
into pure entertainment. It can turn into looking for social scandals, betrayals or compromising stories.
F.F.: I see it in a different way. I do not care about scandals on Facebook. I am rather looking for funny stories which connect people. For example friend of mine created an event after she broke her leg. It was a
party which theme was a broken leg. She has got a mail from a guy who has a group about broken legs and
compiling a book about leg injuries etc. He wanted to be friend with her to share broken leg and the party's
photos. I find it very entertaining and friendly which is the most positive thing about Facebook.

exploded at the beginning of the decade in New York
has committed musical suicide. They decided to drop

Hey you internationals, don’t just sit there!
What are you waiting for? WAPPU IS
HERE!!! The best time of the year has arrived, and it’s time to celebrate. The number
of international students coming to TUT increases year by year, and it’s one of INTO’s
missions to integrate them to the local culture, so hopefully this guide will help internationals to be more active during these happenings.
Wappu is definitely the biggest celebration for
engineering students in Finland. And by biggest, we really mean biggest, this time having
52 events in 11 days! The perfect occasion
to liberate stress, to be happy, joyful and to
wear you overalls all day long. Heck, you
can even sleep in them! And so that you
don’t miss out these great happenings, here’s
a small guide to show you through day by
day. Those marked with a (FP) mean that
fuksipoints are given. Oh and no, there’s not
a mistake, we intentionally replaced all the
V’s with W’s because it looks cool (or so
us Wappu freaks like to think :-).
DISCLAIMER: the following guide represents

Opening of Tamppi Magazine (FP)

Ewery year the official Wappu magazine, Tamppi, is
published bringing humor to all teekkaris and fuksis. The rewealing of each year’ s edition is taken
as the official kick-off for Wappu, and hundreds of
students gather in the Isosali in Festia to presence how Tamppi will look like this time.

The traditional first party during Wappu time. It
is organized by PerSe (the teekkari traditions
club) in our belowed Huuma.

I hawe newer seen this before, but it sounds at
least a lot of fun to watch! The race is open of
course also for guys, but the rules state a minimum
height of 6cm. Let’ s see how that goes.

22:00 Love Hotel
The first ewer Wappu International Party organized
by INTO in cooperation with the international students club of UTA, TAMK and PIRAMK. Music from 6
different host countries played in hourly turns,
and traditional drinks from there sold for cheaper.
Egg competition

TARAKI, the Ciwil Engineering guild organizes this
crazy competition where you basically can buy eggs
to throw at people. Sounds weird huh? Better go
check yourself then.
Wappu mowie (FP)

Ewery year, for no know reason, Blues Brother is
screened and eweryone goes crazy about it. There’ s
a huge queue waiting for seweral hours before the
show, and once inside the theater eweryone seems to
one ewery single line of the mowie. People ewen go
dancing to the front of the theater ewery time
there’ s music. Total Wappu craziness indeed. You
can cut the line if you dress up as any of the
characters in the mowie, and there’ s a 2nd show at
19:00.
Tupsula’ s Outdoor Concert (FP)

You can think of Tupsula as the Mikontalo of teekkaris, or rather the one of the craziest teekkaris.
The kind of ones hawing a committee deciding who is
accepted to liwe on the place and who call each
other wiwes. On this day they organize an outdoor
concert, which basically means that they go out to
their balconies and try to play uhm… music? (not

Tammerkoski beach
Come and share your hangower with hundreds of other
fuksis and teekkaris, just by the riwerside of Tammerkoski. Hawe a few more drinks to reliewe your
pain, grab some food and enjoy good company. The

The weirdest teekkari ball game in which the rule
is that there are no rules! There is one referee
who can come up with whatewer rules he wants for
the moment, but if the players just don’ t like him
they can throw him to the water and choose a new
one. A 2€ bus ride from the Obelisk takes you to
the place, and it includes sima and a bun. This one
is organized by Skilta (Electrical Engineering
guild)
Herwanta’ s Strongest Man competition

I don’ t really know what this is about, but coming
from teekkaris I can imagine the sort of stuff that
has to be lifted…
Badge exchanging party

Huuma
If you were lazy enough not to sew your badges to
your owerall by yourself, this is the perfect party
to attend! The cute girls from TVIK (Textile Engineering guild) can do that for free, and moreower
with a professional job thanks to their sewing machines :-)

Another brand new ewent this year. Usually this is
just a typical garden grill gathering but this time
a strange competition of grill-pimping (tuning)
will be held. Remember also to bring the jäynä
documentation before 15:00!

A couple of years ago the biggest Wappu party was
organized inside a huge tent somewhere in Herwanta.
The amount of people increased so much that nowadays they hawe to do it in a regular night club,

A speech by the chairman of the Student Union is
followed by the announcement of the jäynä competition winners, as well as this year’ s superfuksis.

If you hawen’ t been actiwe enough and therefore
don’ t hawe enough points in your fuksi passport,
this is your last chance to make it to the rapids!
All the guilds will be giwing crazy tasks to their
lazy fuksis to help them reach their goal. The exact place of this happening will be announced later
on.
Capping of the Finnish Maiden

City Center – bridge
The first day of May is now starting, and so is
Wappu day. Ewery single teekkari and fuksi gathers
here to presence the capping of one of the statutes
in Hämeensilta’ s bridge, moment after which fuksis
are also allowed to wear their own caps. A rain of
champagne follows this huge celebration. Most importantly remember that during this night your not
supposed to sleep, but to party all the way to the
next morning!

Morning sauna
6:00 – 9:00 UTA – Atalpa
If you need to sober up a bit after partying all
night long you can come to the Atalpa sports facility of UTA and take a refreshing sauna.
Morning breakfast
9:00 – 12:00 Saha
Time to gather some energy and sawe it for the
last, yet best day of Wappu. And no, don’ t even
think about it, dj Cliff will not be playing!
Fuksi parade
12:00 Orthodox Church

Now is the time to show off how well the fuksis did
with their jäynäs and to impress the whole city of
Tampere with their marwelous härwelis. The parade
starts from the Orthodox Church and carries on towards the Tammerkoski rapids, where the dipping
will happen. Prepare your lungs to sing out loud.
Teekkari dipping

This is it. The efforts during the first academic
year in a fuksi’ s life pay off when he gets dipped
in the rapids to become a real teekkari from then
on. Thousands of people gather around the Tammerkoski to presence this ewent, including the families and friends of the fuksis to be dipped. The
word says that the temperature of the water is
measured in centimeters rather than Celsius degrees, if you know what that means… howewer there
is a bus taking people straight to the Atalpa
sauna, so you won’ t die freezing.
Wappu closing party

Sadly ewerything comes to an end and so does Wappu.
The last chance to party in the name of this huge
teekkari celebration, and also the place to return
your Teemu’ s round scorecard. Hopefully lots of internationals will become Emäteemus this year!
Teemu’s round
Teemu's Round is a traditional actiwation round. The purpose is to get teekkaris and especially fuksis to take
part in seweral Wappu happenings. This year there are 12 happening and you must take part in at least 8 of
them to go through the round. You need to get a scorecard from the Tamppi magazine opening and then ask
for a stamp ewerytime you go to these ewents. If you collect those 8, return your scorecard in the closing
party at Huuma and you will receiwe your prestigious Emäteemu 2009 badge, which will make you an elite

So as you see, we will all have a pretty busy schedule. Oh and yes, we have to remind you that this is
time for partying, but also to keep on being responsible with your school duties… If you have any questions,

Student Union, pro clubs?
In one point of view Student union of TUT, that’s to say TTYY exists to ensure and facilitate all student activities in TUT. But what does it mean? What’s
the role of student union when there already is every kind of guilds and clubs
to arrange events and services?
It’s in TTYY’s interest to make student activities possible and easy to arrange. So by TTYY
it’s much easier to establish guilds or clubs like INTO when compared to establishing a totally own and independent association. Sub-association of TTYY is responsible to TTYY, not
to patent- and registration administration. This makes easier and cheaper to take care of the
club’s economics and administration. It also means that to get some help it’s not necessary
to call public administration, in normal cases it’s enough to go to Päätalo building.
A lot of TTYY’s activity is the same for finnish and international students. Even though it’s
not visible, when TTYY takes part in taking care of student’s benefit, it’s all the student’s
benefit and not regarding to the language. When it comes to services, it’s more difficult to
provide the same in Finnish and in English. The official language of TTYY is Finnish.
So everything cannot be provided in English. The problem is to define which activities and
services should be. International clubs like INTO are a good forum to think a little bit about
international side of TTYY. Several international heads together and a little brainstorming may
lead to ideas of how English should be used in TTYY and by that to even more active an
international activity and usable international services.
Functional student union leads to functional guilds and clubs and those to active student life.
Active student life leads to fun and a lot of newborn teekkaris from Tammerkoski rapids in
first of may!

drinking:
“Because one is
just not enough”
e A long winter as gone and with it the lack of sunlight, these days Bar Passion
the day time is getting longer and brighter. Everything is getting
y filled with energy, quite soon the flowers will blossom and the Tullinaukio 1, in Tullintori, beside Klubi
grass will get green. In few words: Springs is just around the corner.
This place has the best tables in town to enjoy of the sun and a
beer or long drink. Prices on drinks are quite accessible, beer
s Warm days are just around the corner and with them a very Fin- starting at 2.90 from the tap. There is nice music played in the

thing that you have to worry about here is to find a place because

“Terassille” is the action of going to a terrace, which could mean

visit.
My advice: Early birds get their
prize in here, so if you come
around 4:00 pm you should be able
to find a table. Otherwise you
will need to be hunting a table
for some time. Sometimes is just
a matter of luck. Enjoy the sun
and some beers with your mates.
Ale Pupi

“HomeBar”
Ale Pupi is one of those bars with the after mentioned Ale word,
which stands for “offer”. This bar is located in the corner of
Hameenkatu beside Stockmann offers economic prices on beer. A
beer in this place would cost you no more than 3€. For this price
you enjoy a cold one and a perfect view of the street filled with
tons of stressed people walking through the sidewalk.
My advice: Whenever you are shopping in downtown and you feel
like a thirsty mouth, get a beer
there, find a free chair and relax,
shopping
can
be
a
very
stressful activity.

Yes it feels like home! Even though this bar doesn’t have a terrace,
this is one of the few places where you can go with your friends
and enjoy a different night with them, not just drinking, but also
talking and actually enjoying your friends’ conversations. You will
get a beer for around 3.80€, but there always different offers.
Place gets full on weekends around 11 – 11:30 PM. Live music,
DJ’s and short films display in different days of the week.
My advice: Go there if you want to
drink a beer or two in this nice
place and move on. If you are
with several friends and you feel
bored with the same night club
routine this is probably one of
those places to be.
What’s cooking
in Our Kitchen
As you know, INTO is composed
of many different people and
many different cultures. And as
one of the best ways to get to
know different cultures is
through food, we are proud to
present INTO’s kitchen, a section where YOU can submit
things worth trying from your
country.
Gnocchi
Ingredients:
1 kg of potatoes (red ones!, it is better! they “absorb” less flavour, they taste better…)
1 egg
300 g of white flour, the same you use for pizza, not the one for cakes;-)
1 schiacciapatate, http://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schiacciapatate
2 friends
Procedure:
1. Peel potatoes
2. Boil potatoes for at least 30 minutes adding to the water as much salt as you put when you
cook pasta
3. Strain water + potatoes in a “colapasta” as like as you do with pasta
4. While potatoes are still hot you crush them with the schiacciapatate
5. Knead the mixture with your hands
6. Make a hole in the centre and you add the egg (white and red)
7. Knead again
8. Add the flour and you knead again again again
IF the mixture is too sticky THEN you add a little bit of flavour ELSE well done, mixture is ready!
9. Cut one piece of pasta, more or less a knock
10. Prepare a kind of long and thin salami
11. Cut this salami in little pieces long more or less 5 cm, but it is not a rule, it depend on the desired size of the final gnocchi!
12. While you are doing step 11 your friends produce gnocchi trying to transform the little pieces
in balls
13. Friends put their creations in big plates, in order to separate each single gnocchi from the
others (just one level, gnocchi do not have to be as the people on the 30 on Saturday night

Warning: These last 4 steps have to be performed with flour on the table, when you realize that
flour is disappearing you add flour on the table, flour help gnocchi not to stick each other.
GNOCCHI is ready to cook!
14. Prepare at least two pots with water and salt (as much as you put when you cook pasta)
15. When water boils you add the gnocchi in a slow way, one per one till one level is full as
soon as the gnocchi come up to the water surface you remove them with whatever you
want, a big spoon, the hands of your friends… :)
16. Add them directly to another pot with “condimento”
17. Replace their place with other gnocchi
18. Loop of step 15-18 until you take out the last gnocco!
Hyvää Ruokahalua!!!
NOTE: “Condimento” is up to you. For a perfect italian dinner I suggest to prepare three pans
with “condimento”:
WHITE: butter + salvia
RED: sugo, you need another recipe, next Intozine… (it is mainly made by tomatoes)
GREEN: pesto and a bottle of red wine, of course;-)

500g mince meat
1 egg
1 red paprika chopped finely

Place all ingredients in a bowl and mix thoroughly. If mixture is too dry, add some oil; if too wet,
add some flour. Roll balls of the mixture and fry flat in a pan. Serve with your favourite sauce, or
just some tomato ketchup!

MilkyWay Cake
Ingredients :
Chocolate cake box
1 cup flour
2 eggs
1 cup oil
1 1/2 cups water
Frosting
2 Mars Chocolate bars
200 gr cream cheese
1 can condensed milk (You can get this at an oriental shop)
250gr butter
2 table spoons cocoa
Procedure
Cake: You can use the cake box instructions and just mix it with water or you can mix all the ingredients together, whichever you prefer, both should be fine. Preheat oven at 175C, and put butter
and flour in the cake mold so it doesn't stick. Leave for 30-40 min or until you think its ready.Let it
cool down and put on a plate which can contain a lot of frosting.

Frosting:First mix the 200gr of cream cheese and half of the condensed milk in a blender. When
mixed set apart and put in the refrigerator to cool down.
Second, use a glass kettle if you have one, if not a metal one is fine, just make sure it doesn't have
the "none stick black covering" (it messes up the frosting). At low heat put the butter in until it all
melts. Then put the other half of the condensed milk and mix it until both the butter and the milk
mix well.Once that is done add the cocoa and mix, try to filter the cocoa when addind so it doesn't
create little cocoa balls. After that cut the 2 chocolates in little squares and put them in the mix,
stir constantly until everything looks mixed and chocolately. Wait until it cools down a bit then put
on the cake.Wait again until cooled then add the white frosting you prepared earlier and enjoy!

5 dl flour
2 tea spoon baking soda
1 tea spoon salt
4 dl sugar
2 tea spoon cinnamon
3 3/4 dl oil
4 eggs
225 g grated carrot
Mix all and but in the oven to 175C for 20-30min (This depends on the size of the cake mold)

The dark secret behind
Inna Our Ship
TRUE HERWOOD STORY
Ok, so now that we’ve all been to the Love Boat (shame on you if you haven’t!) we know by heart the incredible anthem going
by the name of “Inna our ship”. It got stuck to our head better than that grease in your old frying pan in Mikontalo but the big
question arises: where the hell does this song come from? Not even I personally knew the answer to this mystery, so that’s
why I decided to ask directly the masterminds behind this tune. Joose Kumpulainen and Lauri Pynnönen and old loveboateers (yes, you read right, I just invented a new word now ;) and they are the ones who taught it to me. This is what the
first one answered:
"Hehehe... I actually have video footage from the moments when we came up with it, me and Lauri. I
was like: Lauri, move away to the walk way to the hallway to the walk way! I is coming, have no fear, I
is here! Sing along, these are really good lyrics: Meidän laivassa, meidän laivassa, suuri reikä pohjassa, pliis abandon ship pliis abandon ship!" ...later on we were singing the actual song with brand
new lyrics in the corridors with Lauri, to the megaphone.”
…uhm, thanks a lot Joose! but your explanation leaves us a bit intrigued still. So let’s go ask Lauri
now and get his version of the story:
“After getting the idea of translating the rest of the song into English we did in fact meet a young
cleaning girl in the hallway in front of the stairs, possibly on fifth or sixth deck. The girl was a bit
chubby, but not so much that it couldn’t have been fixed with the vast amount of alcohol we were
carrying.
I have this blurry memory of that moment so I’m not sure if she actually let us get her drunk, but
she did like the progress we made with inventing the new words. The 'love me tender' was a
must, for it was the legendary love boat, and who knew more about love if not old man Elvis (and
captain Stubbing of course).
Our alcohol induced brains refused to record the amazing new lyrics, and we decided to practice it until it would be printed on
our frontal lobes for the remainder of our lives. I think it might've been around the 15th time shouting the song when the
cleaning lady decided we were too concentrated on the future hit, and not in getting to know her better, so she decided to
abandon us, wishing us a nice trip.
Proud about the peace we had made we wanted to share it with the rest of the world, and luckily Joose was carrying the best
tool for the case - a megaphone. Guess everybody in the ship got to know the song in let’s say fifteen minutes.
The song became immediately a hit, and it sold gold in sixteen countries, platinum in five. Success wasn't new to us however,
so we managed the fame as true tutors know how. The song lived on, and everybody were making covers out of it, performing it on their own gigs. We did one comeback with Joose performing the new funky rap karaoke mix at teekkarisauna, but the
audience didn’t know how to appreciate our talent, and the karaoke mix was soon forgotten.
We still stand strong to one of the best songs ever made. Joose is spreading the love of sinking ships in Spain, I continue to
do the same in Helsinki.”
So there you have dear readers, the truth behind our precious Love Boat anthem. And if you still happen not to know what
we’ve been talking about, here are the lyrics:
