Limiting Student Access in Renaissance Place Security is always a concern at Renaissance Learning™ which is why there are several built-in features to help you customize your Renaissance Place™ applications for your specific security needs. With the inclusion of Renaissance Home Connect™ in Enterprise versions of Accelerated Reader™ (AR™) and Accelerated Math™, which is available on the Internet, it becomes even more important to set security restrictions. By default, teachers can access Renaissance Place outside of school. They can run reports and complete other tasks to manage their Renaissance Place activities. Students can also access Renaissance Place from home, although taking Accelerated Reader quizzes or STAR assessments from outside the school is prohibited by the Renaissance Place Site License agreement, which can be viewed by clicking About Renaissance Place at the bottom of any Renaissance Place page. In order to grow as readers, students must spend time outside of school reading, not quizzing. Students should be quizzing in a secure, monitored environment, which is not guaranteed from home. The purpose of Accelerated Reader quizzes is to check general comprehension of books that students read on their own. This information makes it possible for teachers to monitor their students’ daily reading practice and keep them reading at a level that will promote growth. When students take quizzes in a non-secure environment, they may be tempted to look up answers or quiz on books that they haven’t even read. When this happens, an AR quiz measures only their ability to look up answers. This type of quiz data does not represent comprehension ability, it does not help teachers guide students to appropriate books and it is, in effect, meaningless. There is one way to prevent students from quizzing at home – restricting locations where students can access Renaissance Place. By following the steps below, district administrators can restrict students' access to Renaissance Place software to the computers you identify. You can use these restrictions to make sure that students can only log into the Web-based Renaissance Place software from computers in your school or district. This can prevent students from doing practice, taking quizzes, or taking assessments from home. Note: These restrictions do not affect separate client programs that you download and install from the Renaissance Place software. However, students still cannot log in from home using these programs if they do not have the programs installed at home. 1. 2. 3. After you log in, you'll see the Home page. (If you are already working in the software, you can go to this page by clicking Home at the top of any page.) If the Renaissance Place tasks are not listed, click Show Details next to "Renaissance Place." In the list of tasks, click Product Administration. On the Product Administration page, click Set Security Options for Students and Parents. P.O. Box 8036Wisconsin Rapids, WI 54495-8036(800) 338-4204www.renlearn.com © 2013 Renaissance Learning, Inc. In the Restrict Student Workstations section of the Access Security options (see previous page example), you can enter the IP addresses or a range of IP addresses for the computers that students may use to access this software. You can enter a list of individual IP addresses, a range, or a subnet range (IP addresses that begin with the same numbers). See the previous page example for details. Be sure to include all computers at the school or district that students may use to access the software. For assistance, contact your technology/computer coordinator or network administrator. For Renaissance Learning Hosted sites refer to Service and Support KB Article 6873121. Note: These restrictions apply to students only, not parents, teachers, staff members, or administrators, or Renaissance Home Connect™ functionality. Regardless of the IP addresses entered for student access, teachers can still login to the management application from any computer with internet access. 5. When you have finished entering the IP addresses, click Save to save your changes. There are also supplemental things that you can set up to restrict student quizzing at certain times. Date and Time Restrictions: Date and time restrictions are to prevent students from quizzing when students are in the school buildings during non-school hours. 1. 2. 3. 4. To setup date and time restrictions in Accelerated Reader, click Preferences under the Accelerated Reader tab. Under School Preferences click Date and Time Restrictions. Edit Date and Time Restrictions. You can then enter in the specific dates and times that you wish to restrict students from quizzing in Accelerated Reader. Monitor Password Preference: The Monitor Password Preference is setup to ensure that the correct student is taking a quiz. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. To turn on the Monitor Password Preference, click Preferences under the Accelerated Reader tab. Under School Preferences click on Student Quizzing. Edit Student Quizzing. Next to Monitor Password Required, put the check in Before Quizzing for all quiz types. This will ask the student for a monitor password every time they start a new quiz. P.O.
