Newsletter #11_2017
17 March 2017
Dear Parents
If you read the newspaper or watch our news, you will probably have a dim view on what we are like as South Africans. All
our stories seem to be depressing, including corruption, theft, violence and the like. So against this backdrop we have had
Cape Town residents come together to help the fire victims in Hout Bay. What an incredible response this has been. Words
to describe what we have seen include generous, gracious, caring and compassionate. At Camps Bay High School the parents
and teachers mobilized over the weekend and on Monday the donations of food and clothing began to pour in. This has
continued. On Wednesday the whole school had a ‘bread buddies’ day where we made sandwiches for the fire victims. I have
been so proud of the response from our pupils, led by Interact and the RCL. To see them packing boxes every morning
reminded me that we really do care for others.
We have identified our own pupils whose families have been left destitute by the fire, and are able to help them in a more
focussed and comprehensive way. Going forward, it seems that they have enough clothing. So we are going to have more
focussed appeals for goods that are specifically needed next week. I have been told that the current need is for:
 Children clothing
 Small men’s clothing
 Shoes [all sizes]
Soccer Tour 17 – 21 March
Our soccer teams are off to a tournament in Port Elizabeth over this weekend. They left at 04h00 this morning and Mr
Jenneke says all is well and they passed through Riversdale at 08h15.
Waterpolo
The Waterpolo season for the Boys 1st Team ended on a high note with them winning the League. The final was played
against Pinelands High School at the Reddam pool in Tokai. The match got off to a shaky start for our boys, going down early
in the 2nd chukka. However, coach Leon was not going to allow the championship to elude us, and after some encouraging
words, we went on the attack. By the third chuka we were on top of our game and in an exciting finish, where Pinelands
threw everything they had at us, we came through victorious with a 7- 4 win. This is a wonderful end to their undefeated
season. It was emotional for some of the matric boys who are ending their school waterpolo careers. Well done to the team,
their coach Leon and their manager, Mr Mileham.
Special Guest in Assembly
Today we welcomed a special guest in assembly. Steven the Penguin (female). She was present to promote fundraising for
SANCOB. We learnt that the African Penguin is an endangered species with only 50 000 left in the world down from a
population of over 6 million, 100 years ago. We were challenged to adopt a penguin by ACTA who have already ‘sponsored’
4 penguins. So if you want to be part of this, you can bring a R10 donation next week.
Easter Egg Collection
Interact is once again undertaking their Easter Egg Drive. We collect Easter eggs at this time and donate them to children’s
homes and local primary schools that serve under privileged communities. So please buy an extra box of Easter Eggs and
send them to school. Ms Mobsby is co-ordinating this collection.
Grade 8 Pool Party on Friday, 24 March
On Friday 24th March 2017 the prefects will run their annual ‘Pool Party’ for the Grade 8’s from 13h00 to 15h00.
Normal school will take place until 13h00 for the Grade 8’s. They will only miss Assembly. However we will allow the Grade
8’s to come to school in casual clothes on this day to protect their uniforms.
French Exchange
On Tuesday we welcome the French exchange pupils from Toulouse. They will be visiting until 28 March 2017. This is the
second leg of the programme, which started in September 2016 when we visited their school and spent time with them.
Now it is our chance to host them. On Wednesday we will treat them to a special ‘welcoming’ Assembly where our pupils
will perform.

Academic Programme
School work will continue up until Thursday, 30 March 2017. Pupils are to be at school for the rest of the term and work
will happen. If you hear otherwise, please call the school immediately and ask to speak Mr Mostert or myself. Do not keep
your child at home or believe statements like ‘I am doing no work in class’! We really can’t afford to lose any teaching time
and are determined to not let this happen now. If your child is absent we will be calling home to find out where they are.
Thank you for your help in this regard. Have a good long weekend.
Yours sincerely

Parent Driven Project Initiatives 2017:
NEW SPECTATOR STANDS
Greetings and salutations to all our wonderful CBHS parents and
guardians. As the first of our parent-driven projects for this year, we are
looking at purchasing of twelve of these Spectator Stands for the school.
We have countless events going on at our busy school and not enough
stands to facilitate spectator viewing and those we do have are massive and not easily relocated.
These ones we have selected and need can be easily moved by our estate staff
They’re 100% recycled plastic packaging, long lasting and maintenance-free - but not cheap!
So the idea is to get a drive going which will enlist the support and participation in this initiative by all parents, extended
family, guardians, past pupils, friends of Camps Bay High School as well as donations from corporate sponsors and businesses
in Camps Bay. Each bench will carry a plaque on it with the donors name(s) or corporate sponsors name on it.
Last year we raised donations for eight benches/tables for around the school for pupils to use as there was not enough
seating for pupils. Each bench carried a plaque on it engraved with the donor(s) names and or dedication.
Ways in which the donations can be made: Outright donations for the full cost of a stand from a company or family can be given ( total value of one stand R15 500)
 Alternatively a contribution by each member of each Grade of R300-00 then goes toward the purchase of a stand or
stands and the names of the grade contributing families (or child’s name is included on the grade plaque(s) )

This stand was donated by the following 2017 Grade 9’s:
A. Family name or pupils name
B. Family name or pupils name
C. etc
D.

Community Medics is a local citizen’s initiative and is an important part of your neighbourhood and community. This
volunteer group of qualified Emergency Medical Personnel strive to improve the quality of life within your community by
responding to emergencies in your homes, schools, neighbourhoods and your community 24 hrs a day, 7 days a week, often
providing life saving medical services in the shortest response time. Thanks to the sponsorship from ER24 they also have a
daytime medic on duty every day of the week. Additional volunteer members assist with calls after hours or during
weekends. Should their volunteers be unable to respond to any particular emergency, their 24-hour contact centre will
immediately dispatch the next appropriate service so that no medical emergency is left unserviced.
Please make sure you and your family members take note of the emergency number: 087 230 0404
