A WELCOME FROM...
The Fraternity & Sorority Life Office
Located in the Student Leadership and Involvement Center in
Reeve Union, the Fraternity and Sorority Life Office (FSL) is
dedicated to all members of Greek organizations at UW
Oshkosh. I am here to help your students Connect, Learn,
and Grow.
I hope that your students feel a connection to their Greek
organization’s members, as they will become lifelong friends
and I hope they connect to their organization’s pillars learn
how to lead a values-based life. And, lastly, I hope that they
feel a connection to the University. Greek students are more
likely to graduate than non-Greek students in part because
they are provided a full time staff member to connect them to
the campus resources available in order to achieve their end
goal of receiving their degree.
On average, Greek students produce better results in the
classroom. However, that is not the sole focus of these
organizations. They also help young men and women learn
skills to help them succeed past graduation. They work on
skills such as financial planning, conflict resolution, time
management, and so many more. According to a new study,
reported on by the Wall Street Journal, college graduates who
belong to Greek organizations tend to be more financially
successful and happier than non-affiliated students. You can
read about the study here: online.wsj.com/articles/greek-lifeshown-to-be-linked-to-real-life-happiness-1401160205.
Lastly, I hope that your students leave UW Oshkosh and their
chapters feeling like they have grown as a person and as a
professional. While I understand the history and stereotypes of
Greek organizations, those days are done. These organizations
truly are a one of a kind experience in which you can only
accurately describe the amount of growth experienced in your
journey if you have been a part of one.
CHARACTER
As a parent/guardian, you will have many questions
concerning your Titan’s involvement in a Greek organization.
I encourage you to be supportive and learn as much as you
can by asking questions of your Titan throughout the
recruitment process. I am a resource for the students, but I am
also a resource for parents/guardians. I highly encourage you
to contact me with any questions you may have about your
student’s interest in joining a fraternity or sorority. This can truly
be a life-changing experience, and I love when families are
able to share the experience together. Once your student is a
member of a Greek organization, there are many opportunities
for you to share in this aspect of his/her college life! Almost all
chapters host family weekends or special functions. Chapters
recognize that when your student comes to college, you, as a
parent, also become a part of the University family!
As part of the fall recruitment process, the Office of Fraternity
and Sorority Life encourages you to attend family weekend.
This event, known as Fall Fest, is hosted the weekend of
September 19-21, 2014.
You can find more information about the weekend, hosted
by the University at www.uwosh.edu/fallfest.
I CAN’T WAIT TO SEE YOU THERE!
Sincerely-
Angela Zemke

SCHOLARSHIP
TO
University of Wisconsin Oshkosh
FRATERNITY AND
SORORITY LIFE
AT THE UNIVERSITY OF
WISCONSIN OSHKOSH
Congratulations on your student’s choice
to attend UW Oshkosh!
Throughout your Titan’s undergraduate experience, UW
Oshkosh will provide endless amounts of opportunities to get
involved and connected to our institution. An amazing opportunity
that UW Oshkosh provides is Fraternity and Sorority Life. These
organizations exist on campus to uphold their pillars of academic
achievement, dedication to community service, development of
character, leadership development, and social networking. This
guide will provide some insight as to what it means to be part of
the Fraternity and Sorority life community at the University of
Wisconsin Oshkosh.
Q:How will my Titan benefit from fraternity or
sorority life?
A: Membership in a Greek organization develops students beyond what classroom and other activities can do. It is one of the best ways to get involved and connected with the University within the first few days and weeks. Research has shown that involved students are more likely to
graduate and report greater satisfaction with their overall collegiate experience. Many student government leaders, orientation leaders, student organization executive board members, and student employees are involved in the fraternity and sorority community. Also, this is often the first time students are responsible for their own activities and living within their means. Greek organizations provide leadership training opportunities and professional skills
practice that will help them excel in the classroom and bring their resume to the top of the pile in job searches.
Q: What is recruitment?
A: Recruitment is a time of mutual selection between students and chapters. Not only do Greek organizations select new members, but your Titan selects a chapter with which they wish to be affiliated. Recruitment events are alcohol-free and held during the beginning of the fall and spring terms.
Attending a recruitment event does not mean a student is
obligated to join an organization, so we encourage
everyone to check out our interest nights to see if these
organizations might be for them.
LEADERSHIP
Q: How will joining a fraternity or sorority affect my Titan’s academic performance?
Q: What is my role in supporting my Titan’s
recruitment experience?
A: Fraternities and sororities understand that academics should be their number one focus. All of the organizations at UW Oshkosh require a minimum grade point average
(GPA) in order to remain active in their chapters and
provide members numerous resources to keep their GPA
at that level including study sessions, tutoring sessions, and connection to the campus resources available.
Retention and graduation rates are higher among Greek
students, which is attributed to their dedication to
scholastic achievement.
1. Encourage your Titan to attend as many campus events as possible during the first few days of the semester. Being involved is the best way to meet active Greek members
and learn about their chapters. Involvement in other
student organizations is looked favorably upon during the membership selection process.
Q: What is the financial obligation?
A: Each new member will have financial obligations when it comes to joining a fraternity or sorority. This money is
spent directly on services that will benefit your Titan, such as leadership development opportunities, social functions, support of the national organization, philanthropy and more. In most organizations, there is a one-time new
member or initiation fee as well as semester membership dues. Each organization has payment plans for students who may need more time to pay for his/her dues.
Q: Is hazing a part of the Greek culture at UW Oshkosh?
2. Students need support throughout the process of
recruitment/intake. Be supportive and learn as much as you can about Fraternity and Sorority Life by asking questions of your Titan as he or she meets members in fraternities and sororities.
3. Keep an open mind. Fraternity and Sorority Life has changed tremendously through the past few decades so they are not the “Animal House” organizations of the past. Also, Fraternity and Sorority Life is not for everyone.
Fraternities and sororities are different on every campus. Let your Titan choose the group that he or she feels the most comfortable joining.
4. Talk to your Titan beforehand about the financial
obligation, and other costs associated with their college experience.
A: UW Oshkosh has a zero tolerance policy regarding hazing, it is contrary to the purposes of their pillars and the ideals of the Greek community at UW Oshkosh. Each student, before joining, signs a pledge stating they will not
participate or stand by if hazing occurs in any way. The
students take this pledge seriously and are very cautious in their activity choices and allow each member to create their own path in their Fraternity and Sorority Life
experience, not one forced upon them.
