TRY FALL RYE FOR
A GOOD CASH CROP'
Don t overlook fall rye as a cash crop, farmers are urged by the
Soils and Crops Branch of the Manitoba Department of Agriculture,
Fall rye is of real value in many areas it is pointed out,
particularly on lighter textured soils. It is also adaptable to heavy,
well drained soil but it is later in maturity on these soils,
Here are some of the adventages of the crop as outlined by the
branch:
- It is extremely winter hardy and will winter over in all
districts of Manitoba.
- No seeding is necessary in the spring - an important advantage
in years like 1953 and 1954.
- Full use can be made of early spring moisture
- Weeds such as Canadian thistle and sow thistle, meet with competition early in the season.
- A winter cereal gives protection to land vulnerable to
wind-erosion.
- Rye can usually be harvested ahead of all other crops, giving
better opportunity for fall tillage.

Current Experimental Station, seeding in August exposes the crop to more
serious root rot infection. In Manitoba, good yields have been obtained
from seeding as late as September 30.
To combat ergot, most serious rye disease grass headlands should
be kept mowed and only ergot-free seed or seed at least one year old used.
If year-old Seed is not obtainable, seeding to a depth of 2i" will
reduce danger of infection from ergot bodies sown with the seeds.
Tests carried out by the Manitoba Fertilizer Board have indicated
that the use of Ammoniuft Phosphate fertilizer sown with the seed will
speed up maturity, inorease yield and start a much stronger plant resistant
to winter kill on exposed areas.
