Literacy Services of Wisconsin Celebrates 50 Years 1965-2015
Literacy Services of Wisconsin
educates, motivates,
and inspires
engaged adults
to achieve greater
independence and
transform their lives.
Executive Director, Ginger Duiven and
Board President, David Hanson.
LETTER FROM LEADERSHIP
R
eading is almost like one of the senses.
You can't remember what it was like
before you had it; you don't want to imagine
what it would be like not to have it.
For 50 years, LSW has been filled with volunteers – on
the Board of Directors, on committees, and in the tutors'
seats – who understand how important reading is to
living, to participating fully in life itself.
One of the best things about serving as Board President
during our 50th year has been looking back, with gratitude,
to everyone who has given, in so many patient, personal
ways, to build LSW and keep it focused on the power
found in those quiet, one-to-one moments. One of the most
humbling things has been to look around, and look ahead,
and see how the work of LSW is nowhere near done.
David Hanson
Board President
OUR SERVICE
O
ur Adult Basic Education, GED, and English
Language Learning programs are as diverse
as the adult students who enroll. Using the proven
and powerful one-on-one format, trained tutors
work with their students to deliver life-changing
individualized instruction tailored to help them
reach their goals. More than just knowledge,
adults gain confidence in themselves and their
ability to learn, follow through and succeed.
4
GED Preparation
Adult Basic Education
English Language Learning
Our effective GED program is
aligned with the 2014
generation tests. Adult students
reading at or above the 9th
grade level learn computer
literacy skills, and build their
math, science, language arts,
and social studies knowledge
as they prepare for each of the
four credential tests.
Our Adult Basic Education
programs include intensive
remediation through a
multi-sensory phonics
curriculum proven effective
for those nonreaders through
the 4th grade reading level.
Our Pre-GED program is
provided for those readers
between the 5th and 8th
grade levels who seek help
improving their reading
comprehension, spelling,
grammar and mechanics and
hope to prepare to earn a
High School Equivalent
Diploma.
Our English Language
Learning program delivers
quality instruction and real
life practice in developing
speaking, reading and writing
skills for adults whose first
language is not English.
Individualized instruction and
conversation groups help
students build skills and
explore our community to
develop the civics knowledge
they need to navigate in their
adopted home. Preparation
for citizenship tests, TOEFL,
and driver license tests round
out the offerings for adult
students.
Our new Manufacturing and
Skilled Trades “Training Ready”
program provides one-on-one
instruction to refresh and build
on the math skills necessary to
qualify for local workforce
training programs.
In each program students
receive individualized help
with workplace soft skills,
computer literacy, health
literacy, and job search skills
based on their expressed
needs and goals.
5
Our 50th year delivered results! As we
reflected on our 50 years of service we
rededicated ourselves to balancing the
ever present pressure to meet the
demand from people in need of our
services and the commitment to deliver
high quality programs and impact:
91% of ABE students tested improved
their literacy scores
Our new Pre-GED curriculum helped
students double the rate of speed in
which they progressed and passed
the learning threshold to gain entry
into our GED program
90% of English Language Learners
increased their competency in at least
one area: speaking, reading or writing
87% of GED tests taken were passed
on the first try and the remaining 13%
passed on their second attempt
6
The outcomes for the 452 students
who participated in Literacy Services
programs in 2015 are varied and
substantial. Our students:
Earned a GED
Got a job, or a better job, or kept a job
when others at their companies didn’t
Got a raise
Increased self-confidence
Got a driver’s license
Passed the U.S. Citizenship test
Passed the TOEFL exam, a criterion to
enrolling in post-secondary education
for non–native English speakers
Improved personal health
Engaged in their child’s or children’s
education
Qualified for and enrolled in a job
training program

50 YEARS
O
urs is a story of adults who sought and found
a second chance to attain a basic education
and the volunteers who worked with them one-on-one
to reach for their goals. Over Literacy Services’
fifty-year history, more than 30,000 adults have
made this journey in partnership with their tutors.
The simple idea of “Each One, Teach One” has
proven to be a profound solution to the complex
problem of adult illiteracy.
8
Literacy Services was sparked
by this Each One, Teach One
idea. It truly captured the
imagination of a small but
mighty group of people who
went on to bring it to life here
and around the state. We are
humbled to be a part of the
literacy movement that spread
around the globe and honored
to be able to help it to take
hold here in Wisconsin. Our
grassroots, community-built
organization is a case study
in American ingenuity and the
power of the human spirit.
To mark this half century of
life-changing adult education
we hosted a celebration at
the Downtown Hilton City
Center in the beautiful and
historic Crystal Ballroom.
Over 300 friends came
together to raise important
funds for our mission today
and honor our most recent
students of inspiration and
tutor of inspiration. We
honored seven remarkable
organizations with our
Key-Maker Award for their
extraordinary foundational
support dating back to the
1970’s! (see the list page 12)
Our 50-year anniversary inspired a group of volunteers to
come together and produce a book full of the stories that mark
our history since our humble beginning in 1965. Unlocking
Potential is the stunning result of this volunteer team’s efforts.
The book is now available for sale on Amazon.com and
provides a wonderful account of our rich history along with the
inspiring stories of students and alumni.

INSPIRATION AWARDS
STUDENT OF INSPIRATION - Adult Basic Education
Joe Ramirez is an exceedingly bright young man who graduated from high school but struggled with literacy. By his employer’s request, Joe enrolled in ABE in May of 2012 to improve his
skills. Since then, Joe has become a star among the LSW
community. Joe impresses tutors with his wealth of knowledge,
as he can intelligently discuss nearly any topic at length. Joe
travels twice weekly from his home in Sheboygan County to
study at LSW. Beyond his lessons, Joe is often observed joking
with his peers, helping other students with their work, and
volunteering his services on projects around the center. Joe’s
skills and confidence have improved dramatically, his dedication and positivity are infectious, and his devotion to learning
inspires us all.
STUDENT OF INSPIRATION - GED Preparation
Cydney Hubbard enrolled at Literacy Services in 2014. After
previous attempts to complete her secondary credential were
repeatedly interrupted by serious life events, Cydney had one
final opportunity to finish before she would be required to start
over. Her persistence in the face of challenge and, ultimately,
her successful attainment of a High School Equivalency Diploma reveals a profound strength of character. Cydney is currently pursuing post-secondary studies in the health care field at
Milwaukee Area Technical College.
10
STUDENT OF INSPIRATION - English Language Learning
Jose Duran has participated in Literacy Service’s English
Language Learning program since February of 2012. He is an
incredibly hard working and dedicated student. Jose credits his
tutors with improving his English speaking skills which then
enabled him to improve his employment situation. After much
studying and preparation, Jose became a citizen last May. He
proudly invited his tutor to attend the ceremony.
TUTOR OF INSPIRATION - Adult Basic Education
Beverly Weeden has volunteered her time and talents for 25
years to help countless LSW students improve their literacy
skills. Over the years, she has tutored up to 12 hours a week in
nearly every curriculum and program LSW has offered. Now
primarily a reading tutor in the Adult Basic Education program,
Bev has helped dozens of students learn to read, spell, and
write. Her cheerful demeanor and kind smile help students feel
comfortable and welcome, and her “let’s learn this together”
approach puts students at ease with new content. As LSW’s
longest-serving tutor, Bev is well respected among her peers
and well loved by tutors, staff, and students (past and present)
for her generosity, enthusiasm, and devotion. Bev may be
humble, but she spreads inspiration and motivation throughout
the center every week.

PHILANTHROPY
L
iteracy Services of Wisconsin has held a special place in the
hearts of thousands of supporters over its 50 year history. This
organization, its mission, and its effectiveness, have inspired an incredible
number of individuals, companies, and foundations to provide their
important support year after year. 2015 was a special year as:
399 volunteers contributed 29,674 hours of service, valued at $943,185!
One of our amazing donors provided a $100,000 50th Anniversary
Challenge Grant for our endowment fund.
And 53 of you responded to the “Challenge!” You helped LSW add a
total of $200,000 to this important fund over the coming years!
Volunteer tutors make up our entire instructional team here and always have. Side
by side with those hundreds of volunteer tutors each year are volunteers serving on
our Board of Directors, working on fundraising events, welcoming people at our
reception desk and answering your calls, helping us with book donation drives each
year, and many, many more ways! In the following pages we recognize our volunteers and financial donors for 2015.

WAYS TO GIVE
Together we are changing lives
and our community!
Online
www.literacyservices.org
From online giving to employer matching
programs, there are many ways to support our
students’ hard work. A deferred gift can help
you balance your financial goals and your
charitable interests - all while possibly
achieving significant tax benefits. In-kind gifts
such as books, copy paper, or coffee can be a
simple way to contribute to the work of our
students and tutors.

Literacy Services has thrived for over 50 years,
thanks in part to generous donors who have
remembered LSW in their wills. Gifts of
appreciated stock and mutual funds from
supporters over 70-1/2 years old have also
benefited both the donor and Literacy Services.
Contact Ginger Duiven if you would like more
information or to make a contribution this year
to take advantage of the tax benefits.
