HISTORY BECKONS FOR DEFENDING CHAMPIONS STURT SABRES
H
eading into the 2016 Australian Helloworld Under-14 Club Championships, the Sturt Sabres
boys are prepared to defend their 2015 title.
Aiming to become just the fifth different club to go back-to-back
since the tournament’s inception in 1970, the Sabres have a history
of developing great players that have helped them to become one of
the most successful clubs in the country.
The Sabres had a tournament to remember in 2015, providing one
of the highlights of the competition when a three-point buzzer beater
from Taine Mitchell carried them over the line against Melbourne
Tigers in the Semi-Final, 57-55.
“Sturt have developed a number of great players from Phil Smyth to
Brett Maher, Jacob Holmes, Oscar Forman (all of whom have won
medals at an Under 14 nationals) as well as Nicole Seekamp and
four-time Olympian Laura Hodges to name just a few,” said Sturt
Director of Basketball, Scott Butler.
It helped ensure Sturt progressed through the 2015 campaign
undefeated with Sebastian Griffin and Joel Dyer leading the way.
“We have a strong belief that great player development leads to
team success at all levels and this has been a major reason behind
Sturt’s many medals at this event.
“The girls won the title in 1993 and the boys won in 1974, 2005
and 2015 which is a great record over a long period of time for a
relatively small club.”
That most recent Championship snapped an three-year streak for
Victorian clubs and non-Victorian teams have won the title just ten
times in the 45-year history of the Under-14’s.
Despite that record, Butler says that defeating Keilor Thunder in last
year’s Grand Final did not make winning the Championship any
sweeter.
“We try to emulate and better what the big Victorian associations do
as they are the benchmark for basketball in Australia.
“With a relatively small population base to draw from in comparison,
it’s great when a plan comes together and we get a big win in a big
game.”
2016 HELLOWORLD AUSTRALIAN U14 CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS
Jackson Allen and Aimable Rukundo Ciza Rutayisire are the two
returning players in the 2016 team, boosting their back and front
courts respectively and with Rutayisire having averaged 8.3 points
per game last year, he could be set for a big tournament next week.
“The 2016 team has some good size, good guard play and is well
coached by Ben Gliddon. It is always difficult to win a National
Championship but we will give it our best shot.
“The will to prepare is more important than the will to win and both
our boys and girls teams will be well prepared.”
That preparation is an important aspect in the development
of the players at Under-14 level and with the Helloworld Club
Championships providing the first chance to represent your club on
a national level, the tournament is a vital step in the pathway.
“We believe this championship gives our players great big game
experience that sets them up for higher age national championships
and hopefully Australian national teams.
“We have produced many players and coaches who are
professionals and make their living from basketball and this
championship is one of the first stages in their evolution.”

GAME REPORTS
GAME 1
Geraldton Buccaneers Girls 44 defeated Maitland Mustangs Girls 40
A close match throughout was finally broken open by Geraldton in the final term as they showed a steely resolve down the stretch while
hitting a number of big shots. Their first ever game at the Club Championships was led by a fantastic performance from Julia Teakle.
GAME 2
South Adelaide Panthers Girls 59 defeated Canberra Capitals Girls 50
Weight of numbers eventually got the Panthers over the line in a spirited contest from both teams as eight players hit the scoreboard. Tamika
Lindsay paced South Adelaide with 22 points, even knocking down a three-pointer in a strong showing.
GAME 3
Hawthorn Magic Boys 67 defeated Southern District Spartans Boys 57
Hawthorn’s press saw them gain the ascendancy early and combined with some hot shooting in the first half, the Magic were able to open up
a lead which the Spartans could never reel in despite a spirited second half..
GAME 4
Sydney Comets Boys 86 defeated North Tasmania Tigers Boys 29
Sydney showed why they are the NSW State Champions, jumping the Tigers early and running out convincing winners. Using full-court
pressure combined with a thirst to run, the Comets led 46-15 at the half and while the Tigers fought hard through Sejr Deans, foul trouble
to the likes of Zac Seadon made a comeback difficult. A spectacular play in the third quarter from Theo Kidd (16 points) who slammed one
down in traffic got the stadium on their feet.
GAME 5
Darwin Cyclones Boys 40 defeated by Coffs Harbour Suns 56
Coffs Harbour built an early lead then saw off a late Darwin rally to earn the victory. The Suns used defensive pressure to control the tempo
and take a 31-15 half-time lead with Lachlan Mihai (17 points) and Ashley Anderson (16) providing the scoring punch. Big men Connor Watt
and Monypin Malou were also dominant inside but the Cyclones showed they are an impressive team with Luca Tutty (17) and Braith Schloss
(16) fighting until the siren.
GAME 6
Knox Raiders Boys 60 defeated Canberra Capitals Boys 35
The Raiders showed their athleticism from the opening tip and that proved to be the main difference in the game. They were resilient on
defence and Canberra never truly found a rhythm despite the best efforts of Charles Potter
GAME 7
Kalamunda Eastern Suns Girls 33 defeated Manly Sea Eagles Girls 32
No team was able to gain any separation in this contest and while it was a low-scoring affair, the crowd was left on the edge of their seats
throughout the game. The Suns finally broke away late but a three-pointer in the dying seconds from Felicity Henderson ensured they had to
fight until the siren..

GAME 8
Diamond Valley Eagles Girls 136 defeated North Territory South Suns Girls 5
Diamond Valley were relentless in their attack against a Suns team that still saw some solid production from the likes of Shakira Richards
while seven Eagles players hit double-figures.
GAME 9
Townsville Flames Girls 62 defeated Southern Tigers Girls 44
Townsville surprised the Tigers with composed execution and solid half-court defence to break away to a 17-6 lead at quarter-time. The Tigers
never gave in, grinding down their opposition at times but strong leadership from Chailee Ward (12 points) ensured Townsville remained in
control.
GAME 10
: Bendigo Braves Girls 76 defeated North West Tasmania Girls 32
Bendigo established their authority early on and, despite North West Tasmania’s best efforts, cruised to a comfortable 76-32 victory. The
Braves pushed up the floor on defence and quickly raced to a double-digit lead before the Devils scored and Piper Dunlop (18 points) and
Meg McCarthy (15 points) led a balanced Bendigo scoresheet. Zoe Crawford (9 points) and Sophie Furphy (8) led North West Tasmania’s
scorers.
GAME 11
Sturt Sabres Boys 87 defeated North West Tasmanian Devils Boys 55
Sturt showed brilliant speed up and down the floor which set the tone for an exciting match as they began their tournament to defend the
2015 title. Maximising any errors made in transition by the Devils, the Sabres secured an impressive win.
GAME 12
Horsham Hornets Boys 66 defeated Geraldton Buccaneers Boys 41
Benjamin Hobbs exemplified by the style of play set by Horsham who were attacking in their defence and free-flowing in their offence to open
up an early lead. The Buccaneers kept pace with that speed as the game wore on but the deficit proved too much to overcome.
GAME 13
Joondalup Wolves Boys 79 defeated NT South Suns Boys 20
Proving too big in the paint, the Wolves capitalised on offensive rebounds and second chance points to put the Suns to the sword. Jacob Gray
proved key to Joondalup’s chances with his work on the glass while Deijahnelle Vaha kept the Suns ticking along on the scoreboard.
GAME 14
Hills Hornets Boys 57 defeated by Norwood Flames 73
A close match throughout was finally broken open by Geraldton in the final term as they showed a steely resolve down the stretch while
hitting a number of big shots. Their first ever game at the Club Championships was led by a fantastic performance from Julia Teakle.
GAME 15
North Adelaide Rockets Boys 93 defeated Newcastle Hunters 58
The home-town Hunters took it to North Adelaide in the opening minutes but the Rockets settled by quarter-time to take a 15 point advantage.
Darcy McDonald (14 points) showcased some excellent shooting and big man Fiston Ipassou, who finished with 49 points, found clear air
midway through the fourth quarter for a rim-rattling two-hand slam. Michael Walker (20) worked hard inside to lead Newcastle’s scorers.

GAME 16
Diamond Valley Boys 61 defeated Townsville Heat 35
Boxing out on the rebounds and showing tremendous speed up the floor was the recipe for Diamond Valley’s success while their passing also
allowed a lot of open looks. Townsville were aggressive in chasing down loose balls and creating space but just could not keep pace on the
scoreboard.
GAME 17
North Bears Boys 55 defeated Cairns Marlins Boys 45
The Bears looked like they could pull away throughout the game but never owned a comfortable margin until their fitness showed late in the
contest. Both sides were adept at drawing fouls and getting to the line but the Bears showcased a strong team work ethic that will benefit
them throughout the week
GAME 18
Willetton Tigers Boys 65 defeated South Adelaide Panthers Boys 52
The Tigers’ long range shooting proved the difference with Blake Nielsen hitting four triple’s but it was only after half-time that Willetton were
able to pull away following a spirited contest from the Panthers..
GAME 19
Knox Raiders Girls 91 defeated Darwin Cyclones 31
Knox set the tone from the outset with a combination of half-court trapping pressure and slick transition which proved very difficult for Darwin
to handle. The Raiders built a 25-point lead at quarter-time and it was always going to be a long way back but the Cyclones continued to work
hard, ignoring the scoreboard, showing they are here to compete. Charlisle Dunn (18 points), Paige Price (16) and Alannah Chatfield (13) led
Knox’s scoring effort but everyone contributed in some way as the Raiders rolled to a 91-31 victory..
GAME 20
Gold Coast Waves Girls 47 defeated Newcastle Hunters 38
There were never more than a few points between these teams for most of the game, so it was only fitting that it took overtime to separate
them. The Waves took a ten-point lead into quarter-time but Newcastle were spurred on by the home crowd support to tie the match with
three minutes remaining. Gold Coast took over in the extra period though, scoring all nine points.
GAME 21
Sturt Sabres Girls 62 defeated Illawarra Hawks Girls 42
Sturt’s defence saw them over the line in this game, turning steals into fast break points and while Illawarra were able to match with pace for
most of the contest, they could not string together enough points at the offensive end.
GAME 22
Nunawading Spectres 94 defeated North Tasmania Tigers 24
Nunawading got the job done at the defensive end, opening up fast break opportunities thanks to their numerous steals. The Tigers were just
as tenacious in their attack on the ball but the Spectres ultimately proved cleaner with their ball use as they secured their first win.
GAME 23
Hornsby Spiders Girls 56 defeated Willetton Tigers 46
A physical and entertaining contest saw both teams scrapping for loose balls and causing lots of turnovers in a free-flowing game. The
Tigers struggled to avoid foul trouble though which eventually wore them down as the Spiders got on top, eking out a lead that they never
surrendered.

McLeod (8 points) and Tylah Hooper (20) finished well for the Tigers but Sinead McNamara (14) kept the Spartans in the match. It was only a
swift three-minute burst in the third quarter which saw Melbourne finally secure a handy lead as they went on to grind out a solid win.
GAME 25
Sydney Comets Boys 87 defeated Hawthorn Magic Boys 47
This was a much-anticipated meeting after both teams had registered first-up wins earlier in the day but the Comets hit the floor running
and made sure the Magic never got close. Sydney playmaker Jordan Roman was inspirational, regularly beating his man off the dribble and
dishing out assists to multiple targets inside and out as the Comets built a 50-23 half-time lead. Ignatius Mitchell (18 points), Roman (15) and
Theo Kidd and Angus Ole (11 each) all reached double figures for the Comets although Oliver Dempsey never quit for Hawthorn and Cooper
Granger scored 11 points
GAME 26
South Adelaide Panthers Girls 73 defeated Maitland Mustangs Girls 45
The Panthers even line-up got the job done against the home team as they controlled the boards and forced the issue in the open court which
was a concern for the Mustangs. Maitland fought back in the second term but their effort was to no avail as South Adelaide cemented the
victory with a strong finish.
GAME 27
Canberra Capitals Girls 85 defeated Geraldton Girls 21
Geraldton looked to be able to match their opponents early as both teams found the basket but Canberra were able to maintain that
consistency after the break and began to pull away. They kept their foot on the pedal until the final siren but the margin looked worse on the
scoreboard as Geraldton never gave in.
GAME 28
Southern District Spartans Boys 72 defeated Northern Tasmania Boys 53
The Spartans showed their skill early with superior passing and once they were able to open the lanes to the rim and draw fouls, they quickly
opened up a lead. Sejr Deans scored 18 points for the Tassie team but they were unable to stop Tristan Lacy who top-scored with 30.
GAME 29
Knox Raiders Boys 80 defeated Darwin Cyclones Boys 34
Darwin came to play against perennial powerhouse Knox and that made for an entertaining first quarter as they took a lead but once the
Raiders found their rhythm, they powered away in the second term. Billy Paterson (11 points) impressed for the Cyclones but Ivan Rajher (21)
and Harry Johnson (15) led the rampaging Raiders fightback.
GAME 30
Canberra Gunners Boys 53 defeated Coffs Harbour Suns Boys 49
Canberra produced the best comeback win of Day One, rallying from a double-digit deficit to edge out Coffs Harbour. Lachlan Mihai (12
points) was again dangerous for Coffs and Connor Watt (15) was a powerhouse on the boards as the Suns built a 30-21 half-time lead but
Canberra clawed back to level the scores at 41-41 heading into the final period. After a see-sawing fourth quarter, the Gunners emerged
victorious by four points to give both teams a 1-1 split after Day One. Charles Potter (14), Jarrod Barker (12) and Daniel Busing (10) shared the
scoring spoils for Canberra.

Diamond Valley Eagles Girls 77 defeated Kalamunda Eastern Suns Girls 67
A tight game throughout the contest saw Ella Thornton-Elliot starring for the Suns but once Diamond Valley brought their running game into it,
they began to open up a handy advantage. Paige Andrews was the Eagles’ best player although a double-digit margin did not do the score-line
justice.
GAME 32
Manly Sea Eagles Girls 83 defeated NT South Suns Girls 14
A composed performance from start to finish saw Manly secure a dominant victory as they were patient in offence before finding the best
shot as well as aggressive in defence with a number of steals allowing them to get out in the open court.
GAME 33
Bendigo Braves Girls 46 defeated Townsville Flames Girls 32
The Braves created space at the offensive end with ease and looked to be getting the shots they wanted early but they just wouldn’t fall.
Townsville at the other end were more efficient but once the Braves tightened their defence, it proved enough to secure a closely fought win as
they capitalised on turnovers.
GAME 34
Southern Tigers Girls 62 defeated by North West Tasmania Girls 68
North West were quick out of the blocks and built a handy ten-point lead early but the Southern Tigers were persistent and refused to allow
the Devils to break away as Abby Beeche (16 points) and Hanna Mawdsley (18) consistently found their way to the basket. The Tigers made a
mini-run in the third quarter, pegging back the lead to six as the Devils experienced significant foul problems but they were able to hang on for
the win behind Emerson Wells’ 23 points.
