The real “work” of prayer is to become silent and listen to the voice that says good things about

of THANKS!! :
From Pam Burks: To My Church, I just wanted to express my gratitude for your support with
prayers for my father for the last few years. I also want to express the shear feelings of
light that surrounded me and my family during our time of desperate grief. God was
ready for my daddy and I was more understanding of that by being with my church family
for the last 4 years.
A special thanks to members who provided food. My brother and I would have been lost
without your help.
From the Brigitte Carver Family for the love and hospitality extended to our family and friends
at the memorial service

WHY SAY “THE BODY OF CHRIST, BROKEN FOR YOU”?
Why do they say "the body of Christ, broken for you"? Was His body broken?
Someone shared a question about a term heard in a communion service, that Christ's body was "broken for
you." That is not usually what is said in the United Methodist communion ritual. We do not say, "The body
of Christ, BROKEN for you." We say, The body of Christ GIVEN for you."
However, there are reasons for both terms. As the Rev. Taylor Burton-Edwards of Discipleship
Ministries explains, what is given has first been broken.
Here's why.
First, it is what the gospels report that Jesus said about the bread he broke and gave to his disciples at his last
meal with them. "This is my body, broken for you. Do this in remembrance of me."
Thus we remember the action of Jesus breaking the bread in the Great Thanksgiving.
Second, and more deeply, perhaps, is the understanding of sacrifice implicit in these actions — both what
Jesus was about to do himself, what Jesus was doing at that moment with his disciples, and what we are
doing as we offer ourselves to God in the Great Thanksgiving in union with Christ's offering for us.
Ritually, this is how sacrifices are celebrated in the Old Testament. The priest TAKES the elements to be
offered (whether grain, wine, oil or animal flesh), BLESSES God and seeks God's blessing upon them, and
then BREAKS and GIVES them to those who are present for the sacrifice to consume them together.
In consuming what has been offered and blessed by God, the whole assembly is nourished by God's presence
among them. Thus, when Jesus TOOK bread, BLESSED God, BROKE the bread, and GAVE it to his
disciples, ritually, he was enacting a sacrifice of thanksgiving in which it was understood the bread was his
body, and the cup was his blood. And when the disciples ate the bread and drank the cup, they were (and
we still are!) nourished by the presence of Christ in his body and blood.
UNITED METHODIST WOMEN LAUNCH PROMO VIDEO, RESOURCESFOR ASSEMBLY 2018
CONTACT: JAY ROLLINS, COMMUNICATIONS PRODUCER FOR ASSEMBLY 2018 EMAIL JAY
A new promotional video and resources have been launched in anticipation of the 19th quadrennial Assembly of United
Methodist Women in Columbus, Ohio, May 18-20, 2018.
The theme for Assembly is “The Power of Bold.” The event will mark the official celebration of the organization’s
150th anniversary and will also be a return to the location of the first Assembly in 1942.
“Our movement was launched by the bold action of women who saw a need and claimed their power as disciples of Jesus
Christ to address it,” said Harriett Jane Olson, chief executive officer of United Methodist Women. “They sent women
leaders—Isabella Thoburn, an educator, and Dr. Clara Swain, a doctor—to India to serve women and children in
1869. This daring continued when leaders took a bold stand for racial justice and moved their first Assembly in 1942
to Columbus, where African-American women were welcomed at hotels and other public accommodations.”
The website and resources share this legacy and highlight the action-filled weekend where United Methodist Women
members, friends and partners will gather to worship and learn about the needs of women, children and youth in the
21st century. The new resources, available in color and black/white, may be downloaded from the
website, www.UMWAssembly.org/share. The video can also be viewed on YouTube at: http://bit.ly/UMWAssembly.
“The Power of Bold will be evident again at Assembly 2018, when 8,000 women come together in faith to address priority
challenges of their day: mass incarceration, economic inequality, maternal and child health and climate justice,” Olson
said. “We hope these resources will encourage our members to share the word, invite their friends and demonstrate
that when women unite, bold and courageous actions occur!”
The early registration fee for the 2018 Assembly is $295 with a November 30, 2017, deadline. After that date, regular
registration fee is $330. This fee includes two healthy lunches for attendees.
Assembly is a great value at $295 early registration fee. Few other faith-based conferences offer Worship/Plenaries
infused with music and performing arts, quality Workshops & riveting Town Hall Meetings with important leaders,
Action opportunities and Experience Hall with educational immersion experiences for such a low fee.
