WESTERNCONNECT A publication for alumni of Western Technical College August 2015 Volume 13, Number 1 A Golden Year by Leslie Hill This year marks the 50th anniversary of varsity athletics at Western or Coleman Technical Institute as we were known in 1965. Starting with four sports, men’s basketball, wrestling, golf and bowling, Western’s athletics program has continued to grow throughout the years. Those first teams had 33 players total, while current teams average 75 players per year. But while some things have changed, others have stayed the same. We have always been the Cavaliers! The first years Western had had informal basketball teams since the 1920s, but in 1965, the first intercollegiate team was established. Coached by Ted Kothe, who went on to serve as athletic director for nearly 30 years, the team played six home games against the technical institutes in Wausau, Madison, and Wisconsin Rapids and ended the season with a 4-2 record. A time of growth Golf was also offered as a varsity sport. One golf match was played that season at Lawsonia Golf Course in Green Lake, Wis. The team placed third out of five teams and had one medalist in Tom Hinytzke. As athletics continued to gain in popularity, student participation increased, as well as the number of sports offered. In December 1968, the college had a wrestling team for the first time, with nine participants. In 1970, the very first baseball team was formed. As the 1970s progressed, students could choose from baseball, basketball, track, tennis, cheerleading, pom poms, and varsity women’s volleyball. 1979 saw the best season ever for golf; the team was named conference champs, placed second in the state meet, and eighth at nationals! During the 1966-67 season, the Wisconsin Technical College Conference (WTCC) was formed. We also added bowling as a varsity option. In November 1967, Coleman Technical Institute, joined the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA). The basketball team had a 12-6 record. Competition grew to six teams statewide and saw Coleman win the WTCC tournament over Waukesha, who had defeated us twice during the season. John Dall was selected as a first team all-conference performer and to the all-tournament team, while Jack Horsfall made the second all-conference team and was selected the most improved player on the squad. The basketball team had a 12-6 record that year. email: email: [email protected] [email protected] As the 1980s and 90s wore on, teams came and went. We had players named to all-conference teams and teams that were state champions. What remains today are four varsity athletic teams: Men’s baseball and basketball and women’s basketball and volleyball. They provide an important element to the college and help carry on a tradition of sportsmanship, teamwork, and opportunity that was sparked 50 years ago. read more about athletics on page 2 phone: phone: 608.789.6083 608.789.6083 1 website: website: westerntc.edu/alumni westerntc.edu/alumni Hello Western alumni! continued from cover Athletics Today A familiar face for Western’s athletics today is Dave Fish ‘79, high school relations associate and athletic director. He started coaching basketball when he was in his second year of college at Western, co-coaching for a number of years with Tom Smith, another graduate of Western. He served as the interim athletic director in 1993, which became permanent in 1994. 93. That is the percentage of our graduates that are employed within six months of graduation. Pretty impressive, I would say. According to a recent report from the Wisconsin Technical College System, the placement rate is 92% statewide. The report went on to say, “The technical colleges prioritize developing Wisconsin’s talent through responsive curricula and training, with employers serving on program advisory committees. This job-centered mission has roots in Wisconsin statute, which requires the technical colleges to provide individuals with the skills training necessary for full participation in the workforce. Why is it important to offer NJCAA athletics? Western is known for its “college experience,” which includes the Residence Hall, Wellness Center, clubs and organizations, and its varsity athletics. It’s a major selling point with students. Now only 4 of the 16 technical colleges offer NJCAA sports, and one of them, Southwest Tech, only offers golf. If you are looking at a technical college and want to use competitive athletics as either your outlet or a chance to move to the four-year level, then Western can offer that. “When you pair that focus with faculty who teach to the latest industry standards, it allows us to create demand-driven education that leads to jobs,” said Wisconsin Technical College System President Morna Foy. “That’s a win-win for students and employers and it accelerates Wisconsin’s economic growth.” Congratulations Western alumni for making a smart educational choice and thank you for contributing to the economic health of our district, our state, and the nation. If you are seeking employment, don’t forget to utilize resources available to you in the Career Services office or visit westerntc. edu/careerservices. What do athletics add to a student’s academic career? Athletics can teach them time management, priority setting skills, not to mention the team building and leadership skills that come from it. Number (approximately) of athletes during your career If you use an average of 75 student athletes that make our teams over the years, then over 2,500. Alumni and Foundation Manager Highlights for you, either as coach or athletic director The highlights are the former players I run into. I’m seeing more and more of the children of our former athletes coming here. They had a great experience here and encouraged their children to attend. They might not all be going out for a sport, but they are coming to college here. 50th Anniversary of Athletics Celebration Saturday, December 5 Watch westerntc.edu/athletics50 for details! Washburn is a first-year associate of science Landscape Horticulture degree student, who is involved in several extracurricular activities. She is currently an active member of, and serves as the treasurer for, the Landscape Horticulture Club at Western; is a member of the Natural Arts Garden Club, a local garden club; and volunteers in the local community, performing landscape maintenance duties. Washburn chose the two-year program at Western because she felt the program structure fit her lifestyle best; she is able to maintain her job in retail while going to school. As Student Ambassador, Washburn will have opportunities to speak to potential students, community leaders, community groups, and others, and will spotlight the important role of technical and occupational education to the economy and society. Community Engagement and how U Get Connected The winning “All Rudy Team” featured alumnus Dale Rudy along with his sons Gary, Bill, and grandson Chase. Not only was Dale on the winning team, but at almost 89 years of age, he was the oldest and traveled the farthest, visiting us from his home in Florida. One of the tenants of Western’s mission is to “provide relevant, high quality education.” One of the ways we achieve that is through service learning. Coursework is applied as service to the community and helps meet an identified need. Called service-learning, it is a win-win for all involved; students learn the material they need to know and the community benefits. Leading these efforts is the Community Engagement Department at Western. The department is tasked with taking learning to the community. They also support student service-learning through Community Education. Current Western students use skills learned in the classroom to deliver the offerings in the Community Education program. Courses are offered at no cost. The awardwinning “Get That Job” event in February was well attended, featuring panelists Ann Weidner, Gundersen Health System; Kim Magnuson, La Crosse County; Jeanne Colsch ’02, Mid-City Steel; and Ashley Sletten ’10, Reinhart FoodService, with Alumni Association President, Brian Rietzel ’92 as moderator. In addition to these representatives, many Western alumni and personnel shared their expertise with alumni and students on topics such as interview success, using social media, and marketing your past experiences. Whether you are looking for a job or want to be prepared for new opportunities, you won’t want to miss our next event on Tuesday, February 2, 2016. Recently, Western partnered with Great Rivers United Way, UW-La Crosse, Viterbo University, and more than 100 community agencies to help people find volunteer opportunities that fit their interests, skills, and availability. Ugetconnected (www.ugetconnected.org) is the virtual place to go to find volunteer opportunities and is available for alumni and all community members in Western’s district. Using it is easy; search the need listing by seven different counties or filter by category. If you find something that interests you, click on the need to read more, then click “respond to need.” Create a user account and you’re on your way! Supporting and encouraging people to be engaged in our community is the main goal for the Community Engagement Department. We encourage all present and former students to share your talents or volunteer. In this feature, we’ll track down a retiree and get an update on his/her life after Western. Mickey What have you been doing since retirement? I do some gardening at my daughter’s and spend many days visiting. I often take road trips back to Wisconsin to visit my son and his family and my friends. My grandson attended Western last year. I toured the campus with him and was amazed at the changes. I especially liked the Student Development Office, the cafeteria, parking ramp and the new book store. Huebsch What was your role at Western? I spent 15 years in the Student Development Office and thoroughly enjoyed my job as secretary/administrative assistant. In that position, I had many opportunities to work with students, staff and faculty. I retired from Western in June 2008 after 17 years of service. The highlight of my retirement years, so far, is the mission trip I took last December to Bogota, Columbia, with my daughter as part of the leadership for the Community Bible Study of the Chicagoland area. I worked and stayed at Children’s Vision, Intl. a home/school for (100) children. We distributed food, clothing, and toys to the “poor of the poor” living in the mountains above the city. Heart wrenching but at the same time an unforgettable experience. As far as getting away from the harsh winter, I have been able to visit friends in Arizona a few of those cold seasons. But the nice thing about retirement is you don’t have to go out when the wind is blowing or the snow is falling. I curl up with a good book, look out the window and smile. Where are you living now? My plan after retirement was to move down south to get away from the harsh winters in Wisconsin. I ended up moving to Oswego, IL. Not quite as far south as I planned, but I had a good reason, I moved to be closer to my daughter and her family. At the time, she had two small girls and a big house to care for. I was blessed to have a son-in-law who welcomed me as part of the family. I lived there for over two years, enjoying my granddaughters and meeting all the young families in the neighborhood. Then it was time to get my own place. Now I live in a senior apartment complex. I’m just a few miles away from my daughter’s home. What did you like best about Western? I really enjoyed working with students. The daily student interaction when I was in the Business Office was something I loved. The staff was always pleasant and Dr. Rasch was very nice and has done a lot for the College!
