On the Way to Angels Camp
WorldMark Angels Camp overlooks the Greenhorn Creek Golf Club and is part of a beautiful recreation and residential development.
The club's restaurant, Camps, is known for serving some of the finest food in the area. The town of Angels Camp is best known as the
backdrop for Mark Twain's first published story The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County. You'll find many throwbacks to the
Gold Rush era throughout Angels Camp, from the nineteenth-century clotheslines across Main Street to the mini-Main Street in the
visitor's center parking lot. You could say that scenic Calaveras County is a literal gold mine for visitors. Historic and picturesque Gold
Rush towns dot the landscape, along with award-winning vineyards and tasting rooms, micro-breweries, art galleries, museums and
antique shops.
From the east on Hwy 4
Murphys—just eight miles away on Hwy 4—is home to the majority of Calaveras County wineries. Chatom Winery is on Route 4, and
many smaller tasting rooms are mixed among the restaurants and shops on Main Street. Ironstone Vineyards and Stevenot Winery
are the largest operations in town. Take a left on Algiers Road from Main Street to get to Ironstone; turn right on Sheep Ranch Road to
find Stevenot.
From the south on Hwy 49
Sonora, 17 miles southeast of Angels Camp on Hwy 49, is a hub of tourist activity. Established in 1848, this town enjoys the distinction
of being the region's premier shopping area. Sonora's historic Main Street is lined with specialty shops, clothing stores, fine art
galleries and restaurants. Visit the Tuolumne County Museum, housed in the 125-year-old county jail. Just south of Sonora is
Jamestown and the Railtown 1897 State Historic Park. Catch a steam train for an excursion from the Sierras to the plains along one
of the oldest railroads in the West.
From the north on Hwy 49
Northwest of Angles Camp is the town of San Andreas, named after the patron saint of early area miners. San Andreas has a
checkered past, with one of its most colorful citizens being none other than Black Bart. Handsome and debonair, Black Bart was a
stagecoach bandit. This eccentric criminal often left bits of original limerick verse at the crime scene. The jail that held Bart after he
was apprehended still stands as part of the County Museum.
