ADVANTAGES
Dale Carnegie franchises pride
themselves on the company’s core
training values never changing, but the
company is also continually updating its
content, delivery and service offerings.
One of the key business competitive
advantages cited by the regional
franchise is the process that each
trainer must go through to achieve and
maintain certification. Dale Carnegie
is ISO 9001 certified for quality, and it
has accreditation from the American
Council on Education and Accrediting
Council for Continuing Education and

THE NAME “DALE CARNEGIE”
is synonymous with selfimprovement and performancebased training. Dale Carnegie
authored such renowned books as
“How to Win Friends and Influence
People” and “How to Stop
Worrying and Start Living.”
Dale Carnegie world-wide,
which is a year shy of celebrating
its centennial, has spread to 85
countries and 30 languages around
the globe.
What may be less known about
Dale Carnegie Training is its work
in corporate solutions, in addition
to its four public programs that,
with more than 250 competency
modules, can be tailored to fit any
business.
“Our corporate solutions
side of the business is when we
meet with a company’s leaders
and through a strategic process
develop a training solution for that
“We strengthen
Arkansas companies
so that they can
strengthen all
aspects of the state.”

particular company,” said Sarah
Carter, marketing director of Dale
Carnegie Training of the MidSouth.
Dale Carnegie Training, she
said, “is for organizations looking
to improve the performance of their
employees, increasing the bottom
line and for individuals looking
to grow and develop themselves
professionally.”
The regional franchise,
purchased by Seth Mohorn and
Daren Howard in 2008, has plenty
to boast these days. Last December,
the parent company revealed that
the Dale Carnegie Training of the
Mid-South topped all 166 franchise
offices in the world based on
Qualty Trainer scores.

Top Quality Trainer scores
are measured by a Trainer Quality
Index, a composite score of superior
results from 10 key questions on the
Dale Carnegie standard program
evaluation. After each training
session, participants evaluate the
trainers based on the 10 factors,
including skills, preparation, impact
on job performance and overall
satisfaction.
The Little Rock-based franchise
blew the competition, the other
franchises, with a 21 percent higher
than average satisfaction rating based
on the Motorola University survey.
Dale Carnegie as a whole has a 75
percent “exceeds satisfaction” rating,
while Dale Carnegie Training of the
Mid-South has a 96 percent “exceeds
satisfaction” rating.
The Mid-South franchise operates
offices in Little Rock, Springdale,
Memphis and Springfield, Mo., and
also serves northern Mississippi and
northeastern Oklahoma.
“We hold our offerings in many
cities small and large,” said Carter,
noting that the office has held
training classes as far as Jackson,
Tenn., and Tupelo, Miss., and has
traveled to nearly every average-tolarge city in Arkansas.
Howard and Mohorn, who
serve as managing partners, have
a combined 31 years of experience
with the franchise, taking over a
38-year-old business in 2008.
“Along came the greatest
recession in our lifetime,” said
Les Risner, CFO of Dale Carngie
Training of the Mid-South. “We are
substantially stronger today than
we were at the end of 2009. We are
highly confident that if we do the
right things for the right reasons, we
will continue to be a viable business
entity.”
The partners expect to double
business during the next five years.
Some of that may be achieved
through “webinars” and other hightech means.
Howard said, “We will be
tapping into new markets that have
traditionally been ignored. This will
require us to carefully adjust our
business model as needed, as we
go.”
Howard noted that 30 years
ago the vast majority of company
revenue was generated from
“individual” self-pay enrollment,
with trainees attending evening
classes for self-improvement
purposes. Now, he said, “virtually
100 percent of our revenue is
generated from companies who

want to develop higher-performing
employees.”
That means more and more
classes will be conducted during the
regular 8-to-5 workday, but that will
put new demands on the office’s trainer
capacity.
“Each new employee we hire must
appear capable of becoming a certified
Dale Carnegie trainer,” he said.
The Dale Carnegie Training
emphasizes practical principles and
processes by designing programs that
offer people the knowledge, skills
and practices they need to add value
to business. Dale Carnegie partners
with middle-market and large
corporations as well as organizations
to produce measurable business
results by improving employee
performance, with an emphasis on
leadership, sales, team building and
interpersonal relationships, customer
service, public speaking and other
management skills. Dale Carnegie as
a whole has 2,700 trainers which have
implemented instruction to more than

The target audience here is
growing, Sarah Carter said. Training
(Generation.NEXT: Dale Carnegie
Training for Young Adults) is now
being directed at high school students
beginning with a first test class last
summer. Three classes are planned
for this year.
“All 34 employees/trainers
completely believe in what we do and
considers their job not only a job but
a passion,” Carter said. “Not too
many companies can say that.”
And no other office in the Dale
Carnegie family other than the MidSouth one can say they’re the best of
the best. “We offer global reach with
a local Arkansas touch,” Carter said.
“We strengthen Arkansas companies
so that they strengthen all aspects of
the state.” l
