Warhawks On The Move Toward Excellence North Chicago Community High School Venesa Woods, Principal Warhawk Pride is Visible; it’s contagious. Pass It On! From the Principal… November 2015 We have finished our first quarter of the 2015 -2016 year, and we have much to celebrate. Our enrollment has climbed to 812 students; our attendance peaked at 90.5%, and our parent-community participation is steadily rising. This is due to the fact that we are a community of individuals who work together in the best interest of our students, our most valuable evidence of a bright future for all. Our students have celebrated culture and spirit during a great Homecoming Week where over 200 tickets were sold for the dance (another all-time high), where the halls of the building were decorated with Warhawk Pride including the ‘red carpet’ rolled out by the Class of 2016, the Rain Forest extravaganza by the Class of 2017, the Warhawk Land pathway to success by the Class of 2018, and the spectacular Warhawk “Cage the Eagles” balloon galore by the Class of 2019. We were bursting at the seams with school spirit. In addition to spreading the Warhawk spirit, our students are coming to class daily to engage in academic preparedness by participating in all school testing and daily scaffolding towards more rigorous teaching and learning in the classroom. We had our Advanced Placement night, our Schuler Scholar night, our Carnegie Math Workshop, our FAFSA night, and many more college and career events. We are also giving back to the community. Seniors volunteered at the Feed My Starving Children organization and other students exhibited leadership skills in the Chick-Fila leadership program. All are coming together for NCCHS and its entire learning community as evidenced in the recent Health and Wellness Open House. It is the right time to be a Warhawk. As our teachers are developing and implementing best practices to target student learning goals and engage students in the learning process, we encourage you to ask your student about his/her data profile, about classroom data displays, and how they are tracking their academic skill growth using data such as MAP test benchmarks, Common Formative Assessments and overall grades. We value your participation in the learning process. We encourage you to check PowerSchool for your student’s status, set goals with your student for increased academic gains, call teachers with supportive questions, and attend Report Card Pick Up night on Monday, rd th November 23 and Tuesday, November 24 . Every step is a step towards a proactive partnership where parents, teachers, and community support our students to set goals, reach them, and set even higher ones. Our attendance goal of 92% is within our reach and our students being there daily supports our improved achievement goals. This second quarter has more systems for success in place to continue an upward movement. We have accomplished a lot, but we know it is our ongoing, continuous effective effort that will make the difference. Join us and be part of the success. Schuler Scholar Program The Schuler Scholar Program values community service and encourages Schuler Scholars to be informed citizens who engage in their communities. During high school, all Scholars are encouraged to participate in community service on their own and through Schuler’s Social Awareness and Action (SAA) program. SAA is a service-based learning initiative that aims to construct and inspire well-informed, responsible, and active citizens. So far this semester, NCCHS Scholars have engaged in a number of SAA activities. Sophomore Scholars attended a civics oriented exposure at the Jane Addams Hull House where they learned about social reformer, Jane Addams, and the legacy of her work in Chicago. Scholars also participated in a “gleaning” trip, where they harvested the extra crops from a farm and prepared them for donation to food banks. Several also participated in the recent Carnivals hosted by North Chicago Community Partners at local elementary schools. 2 Homecoming 2015 Pep Assembly, Parade, Dance “A Night in the Rain Forest” 3 Community Service NCCHS Students volunteered at North Chicago Community Partners’ Health and Wellness Open House on October 29, 2015. “It was great having a mix of some of our veteran volunteers from past HWOH events, and volunteers new to NCCP and North Chicago. For young adults at that age to be willing to share their time, talents, and energy in connecting people to resources is very admirable. Because the high school students knew the lay of land we had them take on a variety of different roles throughout the event. They helped with the event set up in the cafeteria, placed signage throughout the school, assisted with greeting and walking other volunteers and partners to the event location from the front of the school, some led actual enrichment stations, and we had a few volunteers take on a very special role. As the families were nearing the end of the grocery store line, several of the high school student volunteers joined NCCP staff in walking families to their cars and carrying their bags of food. Families were very appreciative of the service, and we appreciated your high school team for being willing to do A LOT of walking. By night’s end, we had not only distributed nearly 7,000 pounds of food and served 100 families and 250 guests, but we engaged that same number of people in over ten different health and wellness-focused enrichment stations.” - E. Nix The NCCHS All Stars were: Renee Blake, Paris Claypool, Monica Gutierrez, Nancy Trejo, Janet Vazquez, Diana Huicochea, Karina Huicochea, Eberardo Nevarez, Cesia Flores, Sonia Ramirez, JaQuisa Bell, and Beatriz Tochihuitl. ● ● ● “Every student can learn, just not on the same day, or the same way.” -George Evans ● ● ● NJROTC On September 28, NJROTC spent a day onboard Naval Station Great Lakes. The cadets really enjoyed a full day touring around the base and mingling with active duty sailors. The cadets especially enjoyed getting underway onboard a landing craft on Lake Michigan as well as earning their sea cruise ribbon. The cadets also visited the naval museum and learned about Great Lakes long and interesting history. Additionally, the cadets toured the USS White hat, a mockup ship used to train sailors going to the fleet. While there they were greeted by Lt. Stokes, a graduate of North Chicago Community High School, who shared his experiences in the Navy. The cadets had a wonderful time and really appreciated the Navy’s hospitality.
