The New York Immigration Coalition in collaboration with other local organizations is organizing a rally on Thursday July 8th outside the Major
League Baseball Headquarters in New York City to send a message to Arizona: we oppose the un-American law (SB1070) that threatens civil rights and
undermines basic notions of fairness!. The 2011 All-Star Game is currently
scheduled to take place in Phoenix, AZ. The NYIC is calling on MLB Commissioner Bud Selig not hold the All-Star game in Arizona unless the law is
revoked. SB 1070 is a law passed by the Arizona state government that forces
police to ask any person who looks “reasonably suspicious” for their immigration papers. In effect, it will encourage the police to engage in racial profiling
that will target Hispanics and other people of color living in or visiting the
state. It will also marginalize immigrant communities in the state and will
drive a wedge between them and law enforcement officials. Enforcement, police states, and racial profiling: these are not the standards for immigration
reform, and they are not the standards for American public policy.
Hundreds of teenage ballplayers arrive every year in the United States trying
to make a better life. They come from the Dominican Republic , Venezuela,
Mexico and elsewhere, all to play the most American of games. Most grew up
in poverty. Few know English. The game welcomes them anyway. The Major
League Baseball Players Association opposes this law as written.
If the current law goes into effect, the MLBPA will consider additional steps
necessary to protect the rights and interests of its members. There is a long
history of sports leagues and organizations standing up for what is right: from
the international boycott of South Africa during Apartheid, to the NFL’s refusal to hold a Superbowl in Arizona when the state did not acknowledge
Martin Luther King Jr. day. The MLB itself is tied to the struggle for civil
rights in America, beginning with Jackie Robinson who was the first AfricanAmerican player in 1947. The NYIC call on Commissioner Bud Selig to continue in this tradition of demonstrating that the sport values fair play both on
and off the field. The MLB should refuse to hold the All-Star game in Arizona until all baseball players and their fans can live and visit Arizona with
the confidence that their civil rights will be upheld and the police will not
single them out because of the color of their skin.
EIIC would like to invite the community to participate in this Rally in support of Immigration Reform, not Racial Profiling .

July Celebrations
Independence Day
In the United States, Independence Day, commonly known as the Fourth of July, is a federal holiday commemorating the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, declaring independence from
the Kingdom of Great Britain. Independence Day is commonly associated with fireworks, parades, barbecues, carnivals, fairs, picnics, concerts, baseball games, political speeches and ceremonies, and various other
public and private events celebrating the history, government, and traditions of the United States. Independence Day is the national day of the United States.
During the American Revolution, the legal separation of the American colonies from Great Britain occurred
on July 2, 1776, when the Second Continental Congress voted to approve a resolution of independence that
had been proposed in June by Richard Henry Lee of Virginia. After voting for independence, Congress
turned its attention to the Declaration of Independence, with Thomas Jefferson as its principal author.
One of the most enduring myths about Independence Day is that Congress signed the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. The myth had become so firmly established that, decades after the event and
nearing the end of their lives, even the elderly Thomas Jefferson and John Adams had come to believe that
they and the other delegates had signed the Declaration on the fourth. Most delegates actually signed the
Declaration on August 2, 1776. In a remarkable series of coincidences, both John Adams and Thomas Jefferson, two founding fathers of the United States and the only two men who signed the Declaration of Independence to become president, died on the same day: July 4, 1826, which was the United States' 50th anniversary.
2010 New York 4th of July fireworks will be display at approximately 9:20 pm on July 4th, the Macy’s fireworks will be set off from six barges positioned between 24th and 50th Streets on the Hudson River.

Rose of Tralee
The Rose of Tralee festival is held in the Co. Kerry town of Tralee each August and has evolved into much
more than a simple beauty pageant. From its humble beginnings in 1959, the Rose Of Tralee has emerged as
one of the most important cultural events in the Irish social calendar, second only to St Patrick's Day for its
colour, fervour and popularity.
The Rose of Tralee International Festival is a five day festival attracting some 200,000 visitors from all over
Ireland and the world. Contestants come from each county of Ireland as well as girls of Irish descent from as
far a field as New York, Boston and Australia, to compete for the title of The Rose of Tralee.
One lucky girl will be chosen to represent The Empire State at The Rose of Tralee Festival in County Kerry,
Ireland. The Association is most pleased to announce that Katie Hannon, (granddaughter of Danny & Peggy
Hannon) will don the green and gold to represent the Kerrymen’s P&B in the competition, in a joint venture with the Emerald Isle Immigration Center (EIIC) of Woodlawn.
