Year 6 - St Michael and All Angels Catholic Primary School

PSHCE
Year 6 pupils will be looking at Healthy Eating
for the first part of this term exploring which
foods are healthy and the importance of a
eating a balanced diet. The second part of the
term will look at being different.
RE
At St Michael and All Angels, all
pupils follow The Way, The Truth and The Life
RE scheme. Year 6 will explore Jesus as the
Bread of Life looking at both the Jewish
tradition of the Passover and the Christian
Eucharist
After half term, Year 6 then begin their topic
on Jesus as Son of God which gives them the
opportunity to study the life of Jesus and
explore the ways in which He was divine.
Pupils will also look at the events leading upto
Easter and what makes the crucifixion and
Resurrection so important to Christians
Art/DT/Music
These areas of the curriculum will link into
our topic of Early Islamic Civilisation. Pupils
will make a cuneiform tablet from clay
inscribing cuneiform lettering with a stylus.
They will also create paintings of the 14
Stations of the Cross for use in Lent.
P.E
Year 6 will be doing gymnastics for the first
half term and will be concentrating on
balance and creating shapes fluently and effectively using various parts of their bodies..
After half term, Year 6 will then focus on
Outdoor Adventurous Activities.
ICT
This term Year 6 will be using a programme
called ‘Hour of Code.’ They will complete an
online course, where they will learn to design
and write programs that achieve specific goals,
including controlling and stimulating
physical systems. They will solve problems by
breaking them down into small parts and
learning how to sequence, select and repeat
programs.
How you can help
You can encourage your child to read on a
daily basis for pleasure as well as helping your
child to widen their vocabulary by
introducing new words into your
conversations and asking the children if they
know what the words mean.

Maths
This term, Year 6 pupils will be
exploring the concept of algebra and how this
can be used in other areas of Maths to help with
measuring and problem solving. Pupils will also
be looking at the properties of 2D and 3D shapes
exploring how to make 3D shapes from nets.
Pupils will look at what we mean by probability
and the different ways this is used in everyday
life. Students will continue to develop strategies
for mental maths and for using the 4 basic
operations in calculations. Towards the end of
the term, we will look at ratio and proportion
and recap on other areas such as area and
perimeter.
Science
This term Year 6 will be learning about
Evolution. The children will learn about how
living things have changed over time by
examining fossils and exploring how they
provide information about living things from
millions of years ago. The children will also learn
about basic genetics and investigate
characteristics which may be passed down
through families. We will go on to explore how
animals and plants are adapted to their
environments. The children will carry out some
practical investigations to explore this concept.
History and Geography
Early Islamic
Civilisation
Year 6 pupils will study the beginnings of
early Islamic civilisation by focusing on the
geographical properties of locations such as
Mesopotamia and Baghdad. They will learn
about the significance of such places and
how ancient civilisations began there.
Children will analyse the advantages and
disadvantages of a civilisation based in
Baghdad focusing particularly on trade
routes and academic scholars.
They will study the Mongol attack on
Baghdad and the devastating effect this had
on the city particularly on the inhabitants.
Pupils will explore the Cuneiform Alphabet
and learn how letters were formed comparing how they have evolved with our
alphabet today.
As part of the topic, pupils will also learn
about the House of Wisdom and what its
significance was as well as exploring what the
ancient Islamic civilisation has left behind for
modern day societies.
English
The Year 6 curriculum, this term, enables pupils
to study a number of genres as well as
improving their knowledge and practice of
written and spoken grammar.
In writing, pupils will be exploring poetry,
narrative, journalistic writing, argument as well
as myths and legends. As part of their grammar
course, Year 6 will be developing their
vocabulary and punctuation, looking at
prepositions and articles and ensuring they can
use similes, metaphors and alliteration effectively in their writing.
As far as reading goes, pupils are encouraged to
read on a daily basis both in school and at
home to develop their vocabulary as well as
their inference and comprehension skills. As
part of their guided reading, children will read a
variety of texts including fiction, newspapers
and poetry in order to widen their own
experience of reading. Children will be
encouraged to question what the author’s
purpose is in the use of language, layout and
content.
Speaking and listening will be developed in
pupils’ ability to give presentations and
participate in question and answer sessions
perhaps as part of a hot seating activity. Pupils
will be given the opportunity to develop their
confidence and ability to speak in public.
