Susan LET T ER FR OM TH E B OARD P RE S I D E NT Golf season in full swing at Wexford Hello Friends and Neighbors, W ell, that was a rather mild winter for a change. I didn’t see any front yard water features frozen solid this year!! Our yards are coming back and flowers are blooming making our community as beautiful as ever. The scars of Matthew are still visible but with each project completed the damages are less visible on our streets and in those homes with significant damage. Much work still to do but I’m confident we have the leadership and the resources Paul Klasing to continue the restoration task at hand. President This issue of the Club Times is focused on the Golf Course, Golf Activities, Golf Course Maintenance Crew, and Golf Shop Leadership Teams. First of all I hope we all appreciate the attention to detail, passion and professionalism of our Golf Maintenance Crew and Pro Shop. It has been an “Extraordinary” (not in a good way!) five months for our Golf Course Maintenance Team led by Chris Neff. Chris’ crew is comprised of many hard-working folks who are already busy when we wake up every morning. This crew overcomes the challenges of heat/humidity in the summer and the chilling cold mornings during our “winter.” We all see (and hear) these folks blowing, mowing, and cleaning up the course and driving range so each round of golf for owners and guests is safe and enjoyable. The maintenance crew has their plate full with restoration projects for the cart paths, turf, bunkers, and replanting trees/ shrubs in the areas destroyed by Matthew. The crew almost always has a smile and a wave for the golfers as we work our way around the course. I know they always appreciate a thank you from the players when we are out on the links. The Golf Shop Team, led by Scott Hunter is always ener- getic and enthusiastic to help out in any way they can. Their expertise in the technical aspects of playing golf for players of all levels is invaluable. In addition to their coaching and teaching activities, they are quite fluent in organizing and conducting events, tournaments and weekly matches for small and large groups of members and our guests. It always amazes me how positive and supportive Scott and his staff are while the golfers are struggling to find that perfect swing. I encourage you to take the time to stop by the Golf Shop and check out the new merchandise which just arrived. While you are there take the time to thank them for their efforts to make playing golf at Wexford fun and relaxing, while also helping us control our frustration on the links! Susan, Scott and Chris will share many more details in this issue about where we are and what is new in the golf program, including restoration and upcoming programs to help us enjoy and improve our game. I think it is safe to say that we have a very valuable asset in our golf course. The Golf Maintenance crew and Golf Shop Teams both deserve our appreciation and a pat on the back for everything they do on a daily basis to make our course, facilities and golf experience everything we could expect. Safety Reminder An operator/driver of a golf cart must have a current driver’s license; it is our policy. Our Security Staff can and will intervene if necessary. We have had some close calls in the last 12 months and one injury is too many. In closing, please slow down on the roads, as many children and visitors will come through the gates in the coming weeks and months. Avoid distracted driving, and I hope you have a wonderful and safe spring with your friends and families. Golf Professional (843) 686-8812, ext. 142 [email protected] Teaching Tip with James Scales Use less wrists for more consistent pitching W hen hitting pitch shots, one of the most important aspects is consistency. Consistency in pitching, as in all golf shots, is achieved through consistent ball striking. Inconsistent ball striking affects both distance and direction. During my time teaching golf, I have found that the most common hindrance to consistent ball striking is too much wrist action in the swing. Excessive wrist action usually causes inconsistent hits such as fat or thin shots. To hit pitch shots more consistently, use less wrist hinge in the back swing and turn the body and arms together. When making the down swing back through the ball, the body and arms should again turn together through impact to hit the shot. This is a simple move that will help make your pitching a lot more controlled and consistent. To give you an idea of what a typical weekday looks like in Savannah’s world — she starts her day with Yoga/stretching, goes to school from 9 am - 12:30 pm, golfs from 1-5 pm, then works out from 5-6 pm. This young lady’s dedication is evident in every word she speaks and every time she tees up the ball. She is #1 on the Wexford Women’s Golf Team, and her list of accomplishments on the Hurricane Junior Tour continues to grow weekly. This summer, Savannah will travel to Palm Springs California, where she will compete against some of the world’s top junior golfers, in the FCG Callaway Junior World Championship! Upon completion of high school, she plans to attend a Division I college and play golf on that team, with the end goal of becoming a professional women’s golfer and joining the LPGA. Hunter Hylton is the youngest at age 8. He also attends Island Academy. Last summer he participated in the PGA Junior League and he enjoys the Junior Golf Clinics offered by Wexford. With three aspiring golf-driven children, two cats and two dogs, Heather is a wonder mom, and someone deeply adored and respected by her children. The best advice James has ever been given comes from his mother — “Always do what makes you happy.” And while their father, Mike Hylton, doesn’t live on Hilton Head, he plays a huge role in the success of the children and also supports their golf careers every step of the way. The future of golf is truly looking bright for these children. 7 • The Club Times hile golf is a highly-regarded sport by many Wexford owners, we typically don’t think of it as such among our youth. However, after meeting the Hylton family, you will surely see it differently. Although Heather Dobbs-Hylton can’t swing a club, she has one child who will soon graduate college with a degree in Professional Golf Management and two others currently at Island Academy who are well on their way to following in their older brother’s footsteps. So how did they get there? Let’s start from the beginning. At about the age of 5, living in Athens, Georgia, James Hylton expressed an interest in golf and what started out as weekly practice with three friends soon turned into the development of the Athens Area Junior League, which was the start of something great for James — and the entire Hylton family. James’ coach from Athens mentored him through school and helped him pass the PGA Playing Ability Test on his first try during his senior year of high school. (The 36-hole playing ability test for golf is something you must pass if you want to become a PGA Professional, and just to give you an idea of the difficulty — fewer than 20% of those taking the test achieve a passing score.) Since then, James has interned at Colleton River and Grandfather Golf & Country Club in Linville, North Carolina, and this summer he will intern at The Honors Course in Chattanooga, Tennessee. He is currently a Senior at Clemson University, majoring in Professional Golf Management. Savannah Hylton, 14 years old, grew up watching James and was also inspired by and had a desire to excel in the game of golf. Wanting to support Savannah’s passion, Heather learned about the Junior Players Golf Academy, which is ultimately what brought them to Hilton Head Island. McCarty, Clemson University H The Benefits of Turfgrass ealthy turfgrass is a great place to run and play, especially on the golf course. Not only is it nontoxic and lead-free, but it also offers several other environmental benefits. We all know it can get extremely hot in the Lowcountry during the summer months. One of the great things about living next to a golf course is that it keeps it cooler. Grass can be up to 30° degrees cooler than asphalt and 14° cooler than bare ground. It’s hard to imagine how hot it would feel without the golf course in our backyard! Along with the cooler temperatures, grass can clean out impurities that are produced naturally. Water runoff and erosion can be extremely detrimental to the environment. Many impurities can run off or leach into our bodies of water. When it rains, that excess water will begin to run and drain towards the waterways. The grass will help to reduce sediment and pollutants from entering our waterways. Turfgrass roots also purify the water as it leaches through the soil into the aquifers. Along with cleaning the water, it will also clean the air. Can you imagine how bad our pollen season would be if grass wasn’t around to clean some of it? All that said, one of the greatest benefits to turf is oxygen production. A 2,500-squarefoot yard absorbs carbon dioxide and releases enough oxygen daily for a family of four. A golf course fairway on average can absorb 1,500 pounds of carbon dioxide a year! Besides providing a beautiful backdrop and place for golf recreation, turfgrass is great for us and the environment. Tennis Tip: Making too many errors in doubles matches? M any times during a doubles match when we start making too many errors, we tend to panic and speed up the points. This rushing of our shots creates even more errors! Next time this starts to happen, instead of speeding things up, have you and your partner both play back on the baseline. Your goal is to slow down, and create more time for you both to hit your shots. Also, slow your swing speed down, and start aiming higher over the net. In reality this type of thing gives you a more controlled approach to anchoring, particularly in less than ideal conditions. There is also less wear and tear on the engines and gearboxes, the shift is essentially smoother and the computer doesn’t hesitate, so no more grating of gears. Have you ever watched one of those GUN (Australian for highly skilled) charter captains back down on a fish? He deftly uses the throttles to feather the boat keeping the lines behind. Now, with a joystick control, you can do that as well! There is, of course, a word of warning. This, like so many other wonderful things on a modern boat, is an “aid to navigation” (yes you still need the knowledge and experience of the Captain). The system is very complex and has a fair amount of redundancy built in, but I will bet that on a day when you least expect it, the system will fail. On a final note, if you are using one of these systems attached to outboards, try not to look at the engines, they move independently of one another and it is very off putting, at least to me anyway. I learned to keep an eye on an outboard motor to know exactly where it is point- ed. When watching these independent outboards operate, it reminds me a little of that famous Irish dance guy. His legs are flailing about all over the place and the rest of him doesn’t move; very unsettling. Small Craft Advisory I hope that some of you have noticed that we are flying a red triangle flag from the flag pole during windy or inclement weather. When you see just one pennant that means there is a small craft advisory, so think twice about leaving the harbour. If you see 2 triangles, there has been a small craft warning issued, and I suggest you turn around and go back to your slip as the weather outside is “frightful.” Also look for the new white board on the Lock control box; it will give you information about anything in the near vicinity that you should be aware of. For instance, if a floating dock is sighted near the entrance to the May River, wave height and duration, brief weather outlook, or any news that may be useful to you as you travel away from Wexford. 13 • The Club Times t has always been a challenge to dock a boat, particularly in wind or tidal situations. I’m sure many of you have had the pleasure of taking fuel at Broad Creek while the tide is going out and the wind is blowing in the opposite direction. These conditions make it tricky to accomplish the procedure safely. Over many years of trial and error, some of it expensive, I am pretty sure that I can approach any docking situation. I still get a little tense no matter what I’m putting alongside. However, with the advent of modern technology, we have the simple Joystick as a part of the equipment on many helms these days. These wonders of engineering and computer technology have made even the most difficult docking maneuvers attainable to the newest of boat owners. For instance “walking” the boat (moving it sideways) used to be a ballet of rudder control and deft touches to the throttles, now a flick of the wrist and a little turn can accomplish the exact same thing. This gives confidence to the operator and contributes to a much safer experience on the water for all. The technology is not limited to bigger boats either, virtually any boat can have the system retrofitted. The introduction of outboards with the ability to operate independently has also contributed to the system’s wide adoption. If this option is available to you on a new boat, I recommend you get it. I believe you will find it very easy to use and the learning curve not very steep — just look on YouTube to see 6-year olds leaving and returning to their slips in 30-foot-plus boats.
