PINSTECH is one of the premier research and development centres of the country. A standing of a
research centre is gauged by the number of papers published per year in international journals of
repute. Apart from some universities where post graduate students play significant role in raising
the number of publications, PINSTECH is contributing commendably amongst the R&D centres.
Pakistan Council for Science & Technology (PCST) has recently announced Research Productivity
Award (RPA) for the year 2010 for the most productive scientists of the country. It is a matter of pride
for PINSTECH that the list carries maximum number of scientists from our institute among the R&D
centres. Sincere felicitations are extended to all the recipients of RPA. Editors would like to
congratulate our two colleagues who have been honoured with National Civil Awards on the
Independence Day of Pakistan 2011. We take the opportunity to advise our younger colleagues to
follow the path of dedication and hard work so as to earn more laurels for PINSTECH in future too.
Training Course on advance Data Acquisition
Control & Process
Management Information System (MIS) Division,
Directorate of Coordination, PINSTECH organized a
short training course on Advanced Data Acquisition and
Process Control from 18-22 July, 2011. The objective of
the course was to provide a comprehensive training to
Scientists, Engineers, academicians and students to
develop integrated, high performance data acquisition
systems enabling control, processing and accurate
measurements. Forty two (42) participants from
Eighteen PAEC Establishments(KCP-1, KCP-II , KCPIII, KCI ,NILOP, NPEP, NTFP, O-LAB, PIEAS,
PINSTECH, NMC-DG KHAN, DGRE , ACL, C2, C-3/4,
DNPER, DTD) and two (2) National Universities
(Islamia University Bhawalpur, International Islamic
University Islamabad) attended the event. The Faculty
from PINSTECH COMSATS, UET Taxila, MAJU and
PIEAS delivered lectures.
The course was inaugurated by Dr. Jamshed Hussain
Zaidi, Director General PINSTECH. In his inaugural
address, he highlighted the importance of data
acquisition systems, control and process as well as
hands-on-practice in the laboratory environment. Mr.
Abdul Karim, Head MIS Division, PINSTECH welcomed
the participants and explained salient features of the
training event. The course coordinator Engr. Muhammad
Athar Farooq PE, MIS Division introduced the course.
Director Coordination Dr. Riffat Mahmood Quershi
chaired the concluding session and distributed
certificates among the participants.

Great Muslim scientist
Abul Qasim Khalaf ibn al-Abbas alZahrawi (known in the west as
Abulcasis) was born in 936 C.E. in
Zahra in the neighborhood of
Cordova (shaim). He became one of
the most renowned surgeons of the
Muslim era and was physician to King
Al-Hakam-II of Spain. He is best
known for his early and original breakthroughs in surgery
as well as for his famous Medical Ecyclopaedia called AlTasrif, which is composed of 30 volumes covering
different aspects of medical science. The more important
part of this series comprises three books on surgery,
which describe in detail various aspects of surgical
treatment based on the operations performed by him,
including cauterization, removal of stone from the
bladder, dissection of animals, midwifery, stypics and
surgery of eye, ear and throat.
He perfected several delicate operations, including
removal of the dead foetus and amputation. The book
contains numerous diagrams and illustrations of surgical
instruments, in use or developed by him, and comprised
a part of the medical curriculum in European countries
for many centuries. Contrary to the view that the Muslims
felt shy of surgery, Al-Zahrawi's Al-Tasrif provided a
monumental collection for this branch of applied science.
Al-Zahrawi was the inventor of several surgical
instruments, of which three are notable: (i) an instrument
for internal examination of the ear, (ii) an instrument for
internal inspection of the urethra, and (iii) and instrument
for applying or removing foreign bodies from the throat.
He specialized in curing disease by cauterization and
applied the technique to as many as 50 different
operations.
Visit of students from NUST
