Hello Brethren. Welcome Back to Light!
I truly hope that this edition finds you all
well and that you enjoyed your time this
summer. It sure was hot weather and I
for one spent many days after work hiding in the shade, when I would have normally gone out and about.
We have a tight schedule in our last 4
meetings prior to elections due to previous issues during the year. Our new
members are waiting in the wings to receive first Light at our first meeting and
Brother Roark will be raised to Master
Mason on October 11th. Please come out
to give deserved support to this Brother
who showed such great patience waiting
through the dark months.
Brothers, please send us pictures and
stories of your travels throughout the
world or any you have of yourself and
family, what you have been doing
abroad, and maybe even a story you’d
like to share. I know we have Brothers all
over doing wonderful things and I
would like to spread the word. If you can
email it, then please do so to WB Carson
at [email protected] or send
it via the US Postal Service.
We also have a Facebook page that you
can post items to directly, for those with
access (contact the Secretary for access). I
look forward to sharing those letters and
stories, not only in lodge, but through
our electronic communications. Also,
check out the calendar and other articles
in your Trestleboard and on the Community Lodge website
We have Brotherhood, Charity and Friendship to focus on everyday and I would like to
request everyone to please attend a meeting
when you can. It
is always great to
receive Brothers
that we haven’t
seen in some
time.
You are always
welcome in our
company and will
bring smiles to
the faces of old
friends. Dinner starts at 6:45p and we tyle at
7:30p. If you can just come for dinner, that’s
okay. If you need a driver, please let the
Lodge know. If you feel like you have forgotten some things, it is no big deal, we’re
happy to review everything with you so no
one is embarrassed. If you simply live too
far away, drop us a line about how you’re
doing. You all, are always in our thoughts
and prayers.
Brothers, this year I have been privileged to
have helped lead the Lodge through some
difficult restructuring, to have assisted in
restarting temporarily misplaced traditions,
raising new Masons and to have created
some new events, that the new and younger
members will enjoy as well raise donations
for worthy causes. I look forward to continuing in all these and all other new endeavors
that are already in the works for the coming
years, and as always, to raise new Brothers
and make new friends . Thank you.
Fraternally and sincerely,
WM. Gary M Pastor

The Masonic Fraternity is founded on the rock of human dignity. That is the basic concept of all the lessons taught in all the Rituals of
the Craft. The words of the ritual may vary from place to place. They may be in different languages from country to country. But
the fundamental principles of the Fraternity is that man is an individual and should be treated as such. In every man, there is a quality
that deserves respect. Freemasonry chooses good men, educates and polishes them for a place in our profane world, thus fulfilling its
intended purpose of building a new and better society - a monument that will increase in perfection with the passing years and constitute a glowing legacy for the future. We look to God for our strength and inspiration in all our endeavors. As a man on bended knee,
you willingly declared your belief in God as you received and pursued the degrees of Freemasonry. Ours is not a religious society to
replace any church, but Masonry through its belief in God endeavors to make good men better and prepare them with more of the
cardinal virtues of life to fulfill the goals that they seek in the changing world.
The Masonic Calendar*
The Temple is an image of the world, and the
beginning of the world establishes time.
The
Masonic world is symbolically the same age as
the Universe and refers to the moment of Creation as the anno lucis, Year of Light or Year of
Masonry.
English Masons took their dates
from Archbishop James Ussher, an Anglican
priest born in Dublin in 1580.
Although
Ussher produced a considerable number of reli-
gious works, his most famous was his Annals of
the Old Testament circa 1650. In this work he
claimed that the Earth was created on the eve-
ning preceding Sunday, October 23, 4004 B.C.
It is still referenced today by many scholars.
With this being said, the year 2005 would actually translate to 6009. This system of dating
was accepted by many English churches at the
beginning of the eighteenth century, as well as
being adopted by Anderson’s Constitutions, the
basic text of modern Freemasonry, which dates
from the same period. Masonic dating modifies
the 4004 B.C. creation date by rounding it off
to 4000 years. Thus 2005 would translate to
6005 instead of 6009. The Masonic year gen-
erally begins in March, a tradition which is
observed, especially in France. For example:
April 15, 2005 is the 15th day of the second
month of the year for 6005 A.L. (anno lucis).
In the Judeo-Christian culture, Masons ac-
cept the biblical image of a constantly chang-
ing creation and define their mission as a
continuation of the work started by the
“Great Architect of the Universe”. Given the
fact that Masons see themselves as heirs to a
world in the process of being constructed, it is
natural that they should place themselves in
it from the very beginning.
This explains
why the most common practice among Ma-
sons, from the first degree of apprenticeship
onward, is to add 4000 years to the Chris-
tian date. This symbolically associates them
with the “Light” which was shed on the foundation of a work that is still to be completed.
This very notion of dating the creation has
meaning and provides food for thought only,
if it is seen as being symbolic.

The 2nd Annual Pancake Breakfast, Open House and Red Cross Blood Drive went off without a hitch this year.
Guess it takes a year to work out the bugs in any events. Proceeds went to Nationwide Children’s Hospital and it was
wonderful to assist in such a worthy organization. The Open House resulted in interest from some new men, some of
who joined Masonry and the Blood Drive resulted in helping the lives of many people, some even outside of the Columbus area. We should look forward to increasing our showing in all events next year.
The First Annual Shred Day had a few wrinkles, but was still a success for a first time. Mother nature was harsh to us
for the first portion of the day with 40 degree temperatures and wet conditions, but as the day progressed, we received warmer weather and better results. Proceeds went to the Ohio Special Olympics and is always a pleasure to
help those incredible individuals.
Speaking of the Ohio Special Olympics, it was fantastic day! The weather was spectacular and the people as always,
were a pleasure to meet, and support in their endeavors. The Brothers from the Achbar Grotto were the Grill Masters and they had tasty hamburgers and brats. Everyone enjoyed the food before the march around the field where all
the Brothers enjoyed the cheers from the crowd as another years donation total was announced. WM Gary Pastor,
SW Buddy Hummler and JW Brian McMichael were all present with many members of the NW Temple and of
course, Brothers from all over the state. Maybe next year, you will come too! Please enjoy the following pictures
from the many participants and especially note the Upper Arlington Golden Bears.

We had a great Memorial Day Ceremony in the Lodge on May 30, 2016 with a
great turnout, preceding a delicious breakfast provided by Bob Evans. It was a
solemn ceremony that allowed us to remember those Brothers called by the Great
Architect, in a dignified manner and involved many Brothers in it’s completion. It
is hoped that this ceremony will be used repeatedly in the future as part of what is
one of the great traditions of our Lodge. The ceremony was followed up by the
Minute and A Half Club presided by WB Phil Furrow and was followed up by a
wonderful visit and Hello! to Brother Bill and it was fantastic to have so many
Brothers present. God Bless You All.
“Duties of American Citizenship” (an excerpt) by Theodore Roosevelt
Buffalo, NY, January 26, 1883
“Of course, in one sense, the first essential for a man’s being a good citizen is his possession of the home virtues of
which we think when we call a man by the emphatic adjective of manly. No man can be a good citizen who is not a
good husband and a good father, who is not honest in his dealings with other men and women, faithful to his friends
and fearless in the presence of his foes, who has got a sound heart, a sound mind, and a sound body; exactly as no
amount of attention to civil duties will save a nation if the domestic life is undermined, or there is a lack of the rude
military virtues which alone can assure a country’s position in the world. In a free republic, the ideal citizen must be
one willing and able to take arms for the defense of the flag, exactly as the ideal citizen must be the father of many
healthy children. A race must be strong and vigorous; it must be a race of good fighters and good breeders, else it’s
wisdom will come to naught and it’s virtue ineffective… But this aside from my subject, for what I wish to talk of is
the attitude of the American citizen in civic life. It ought to be axiomatic in this country that every man must devote
a reasonable share of his time to doing his duty in the Political life of the community. No man has a right to shirk his
political duties under whatever plea of please or business; and while such shirking may be pardoned in those of small
cleans, it is entirely unpardonable in those among whom it is most common-in the people whose circumstances give
them freedom in the struggle for life. In so far as the community grows to think rightly, it will likewise grow to regard the young man of means who shirks his duty to the State in time of peace as being only one degree worse than
the man who thus shirks it in a time of war. A great many of our men in business, or of our young men who are bent
on enjoying life (as they have a perfect right to do if only they do not sacrifice other things to enjoyment), rather
plume themselves upon being good citizens if they even vote; yet voting is the least of their duties, nothing worth
gaining is ever gained without effort. You can no more have freedom without striving and suffering for it than you
can win success as a banker or a lawyer without labor or effort, without self-denial in youth and the display of a ready
and alert middle age. The people who say that they have no time to attend to politics are simply saying that they are
unfit to live in a free community… “
This made me think and I hope it does the same for others. Read complete story @ artofmanliness.com -WB Pastor
Blessed is the servant who loves his brother as much when he is sick and use-
1
less as when he is well and can be of service to him.
And blessed is he who loves his brother as well when he is afar off as when he
is by his side, and who would say nothing behind his back he might not, in
love, say before his face.
