Cardboard Boat Race Rules
Construction Material & Rules
Design and build a boat that will complete a short relay at the Arapahoe Plunge on
the 4th of July.
The ENTIRE boat must be built from cardboard & duct tape. No additional
building materials are allowed.
Teams will compete in relays. One team member must captain the boat for two
laps, exit the boat and then another team member must enter the boat to complete
one more lap. The first boat and team member back to dry land wins.
Fastening material is to be duct tape only: No glue, epoxy, nails or caulking, etc.
No industrial type of cardboard is allowed-Boats will be inspected.
The crew compartment CANNOT be enclosed so as to interfere with escape.
Unique boat designs and creativity is encouraged.
Crew costumes are encouraged.
Design is left to builder(s). Let your imagination take over.
Boats are not to be over 24 inches wide or over 48 inches in length.
NO surfboard style boat is allowed.
The boat must be completed before 1pm on the 4th of July. Anything other than
minor fixes of the boats at the park will not be allowed
JUDGES DECIDE ON THE INTERPRETATION OF THE RULES.
Race Rules
Crew members must be at least 8 years of age to participate. It is suggested that
everyone knows how to swim or at least float.
Both boat crew members must bring and wear their own approved personal
flotation device (life jacket) of the correct size.
Both boat crew members must bring and wear helmets.
Boat can be propelled using hands or paddles.
Teams must check in with the judges by 1:30pm on the 4th of July at the
Arapahoe Plunge. All boats will be inspected for seaworthiness.
You CANNOT race without the proper signatures on the entry form.
During competition, crew must be IN the boat, not towing it, or holding it between
their legs, swimming, or allowing the life jacket to provide the floatation of the
vessel.
Sunken or discarded boats must be disposed of in designated trash receptacle.
This is the team’s responsibility.
ANY BEHAVIOUR THAT IS DEEMED TO BE DETRIMENTAL TO THE
EVENT OR OTHER PARTICIPANTS WILL RESULT IN TEAM
DISQUALIFICATION.
