Essential Question(s):
Big Idea(s): Ask and answer the questions, “How are you?” “What is your name?” “Where are you
from?” “How old are you?” and “When is your birthday?” “What day is it?” “What is the date?” Also,
learning basic greetings, formalities, and good-byes. To learn these concepts, successful students will
learn numbers, days of the week, and months of the year. Students will also learn cultural norms of
communication.

Proficiency Guidelines:
Speaking: Novice Mid – Successful students communicate minimally using a number of isolated words
and memorized phrases. They can respond to simple questions using stock answers.
Listening: Novice Mid – Successful students recognize and begin to understand a number of highfrequency, highly contextualized words, phrases and questions.
