In addition to his classroom duties, Mr. Keller has also served as the Student Council and Chess Club advisor and as the Middle School English Department chairperson. He also created and ran the “Explorations” Program for Middle School students interested in enrichment activites. Mr. Keller’s reach has been felt in most of the schools of Orleans County. In addition to his work in the Middle School, he has been a fifth-block instructor at our high school. (He even has ties in our elementary school where his wife teaches in our Pre-Kindergarten program.) Mr. Keller is a Board of Education member (and parent) in the Medina Central School District. His first teaching job was in Kendall and he student taught in Holley. In nominating Mr. Keller for this honor, a parent noted, “While each and every one of the wonderful teachers on my students’ team could, and should, be credited with his success this year, .not a day goes by where a discussion with Mr. Keller isn’t brought to my attention. Mr. Keller takes the time to show him the respect of his viewpoint, humors him by listening to his sometimes outlandish ideas and then challenges him to think from different points of view. I would like to thank Mr. Keller for taking the time from your day to connect with his students." Congratulations to our 2016 Educator of the Year! On May 16, 2016, the Albion Central School District Board of Education held the eighth annual Academic Convocation Dinner. The guest speaker was 2005 Albion High School graduate, Sarah Brown Dirkes. Sarah currently resides in Washington, D.C., and works as the Director of External Relations for the American Farm Bureau Federation, an advocacy organization for U.S. farmers and ranchers. Sarah graduated from Cornell University’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences in 2009 with a B.S. in Communication and a minor in Applied Economics and Management. In Sarah’s job at the American Farm Bureau Federation, she has created a new focus for the Farm Bureau that she calls “Corporate Advocacy.” While her colleagues are advocating for farmers and ranchers on Capitol Hill and in the courts, Sarah is leading the conversation in board rooms with companies across the US food supply chain to ensure that there is a strong future for families in agriculture. She urged the students to take every opportunity that is available and to “dare to fail.” She encouraged them to learn their strengths and to apply their strengths to all aspects of their lives. The honored students were introduced individually and personally congratulated by each Board of Education member. Students shared their plans for the future. The students’ parents were then presented with a special cord signifying academic achievement. The parents placed the honor cord around the neck of their children. The cord will be worn again by students during their graduation ceremony. Academic Honor Students graduating with a cumulative weighted Grade Point Average of 90 percent or higher were: Marella Albanese, Miranda Allen, Dylan Bader, Matthew Baker, Desiree Barber, Daniel Beam, Bethany Bowman, Scott Daniels, Matthew De Carlo, Alex De Smit, Wynter Dumont, Cheyenna Eagle, Randal Eblacker, Kelley Flanagan, Matthew Flanagan, Madeline Gibbs, Sarah Graham, Mckayla Hastings, Meghan Hurley, Miranda King, Caitlin Malanowski, Alexis Manning, Alyce Miller, Evan Pappalardo, Meredith Patterson, Katelynn Perry, Katlin Pieniaszek, Aliya Rayner, Zachary Shaffer, Kelsee Soule, Melissa Symonds, Kyle Thaine, Nathaniel Trembley, Terry Van Epps, Chloe Weis, Raven White, and Mikayla Yaskulski. At the conclusion of the event the students led the crowd in singing the Alma Mater. A Message from the Superintendent… Congratulations to the Class of 2016! On Fri., June 24, 140 Purple Eagles joined the ranks of the Albion Central School Alumni. The Albion community is rightfully proud of the achievements of these students. As I noted at the ceremony, FOR this class, the future is bright and BECAUSE of this class, the future is in good hands. The Class of 2016 has earned many honors. Highlights include: •Nearly two of every three has taken Advanced Placement and College Credit courses, completing over 1,000 college credits (more than 34 years of full-time college study) in their four high school years •One of every six students completed Career and Technical Education programs at BOCES •80% of these students will pursue further education or training immediately with 11 graduates (8 percent) serving their nation in military duty •More than 41 percent of this class has met the requirements of the Regents Diploma with Advanced Designation… far exceeding the 31 percent state average •During their high school career, Purple Eagle teams have earned •10 League titles •Five Sectional titles •10 Sectional Sportsmanship Awards, and •58 Scholar-Athlete recognitions for maintaining team averages of 90 or better, meaning that 84 percent of their teams carried a GPA of at least a 90 (and EVERY ONE of their teams did so this year) •This class began fourth grade band nine years ago– the same year that Albion earned its first recognition as a “Best Community for Music Education” and we’ve been recognized so every year since and has •Earned 13 marching band championships •Brought home well over 100 top scores in state vocal and instrumental festivals •Garnered many Stars of Tomorrow honors for its drama productions including •2 best singing ensembles, best acting ensembles and outstanding musicals honors and •3 best dance ensembles, best student orchestras and best stage crews nods. •They have logged more than 8,000 hours of community service… the equivalent of more than four years of full-time employment with 25 members completing more than 60 hours, and nine logging more than 100 hours While we send the Class of 2016 off to their futures, with the best wishes of their families, school, and community, we continue providing for our younger students. The Class of 2028 celebrated their own graduation at the kindergarten ceremonies days before the high school program. The event celebrated their growth this year. The kindergarten and high school ceremonies serve as a reminder of how much our students grow and experience from their first days of school to their last. We at school will be busy this summer preparing for the exciting arrival of the new kindergarten and prekindergarten students (the classes of 2029 and 2030!) and the rest of the Purple Eagles on Wednesday, September 7, 2016. In the meantime teachers and administrators are busy with in-service and curriculum projects, buildings and grounds crews are preparing our facilities, and contractors are working on our roof replacement project. It will be a busy summer—to ensure that we are ready for our students’ return! On behalf of everyone at Albion Central, I wish you a safe and pleasant summer with your families. 2016 Art Show and Crossroads Premiere The annual premier of the "Crossroads" literary magazine and the Art Club Student Art Show took place on Thu., May 26 in the High School Arts Foyer. The recipients of this award must show leadership in band and lessons, responsibility in being prepared for both band and lessons, and have shown motivation and growth in lessons. These students must also express dedication to continue playing an instrument in the middle school. The top candidates were selected by the current elementary band teacher, Miss Fix using a rubric form that addresses each of these areas. The Memorial plaque is currently displayed outside the Band Room. This year the “Tap Thy Foot” award is presented to Dallas Ecker and Austin Narburgh. Congratulations to Dallas and Austin! Grade 5 Medal Winners Mrs. Husung’s class held its annual dinosaur dig. This is the 25th year that her students participated in this activity. This year, Mrs. Wolfe’s class joined us for their first expedition. During the expedition, they found a real dinosaur fossil which they concluded must have been an herbivorous (plant eater) dinosaur due to its flat teeth. Then they looked closely at the top of the head and the evidence indicated it might be a head of a Triceratops due to its long nose and points on top of the head. Each child also found a dinosaur of their own during the dig, which they agreed was a fantasy/make believe dinosaur. The classes ended our dig with an ice pop treat since the dinosaurs may have become extinct due to the earth getting colder from meteors. Mrs. Husung said, “We had so much fun being Paleontologists for the day!” Row 1: Emma Foote, Ava Jurs and Logan Graham. Row 2: Nick Harling, Caleb Hyde, Clara Bolton, Keira Sargent, Natalie Baron, Tayler Soule, Bryce Wison, Dallas Ecker, Travis Seitmann and Hailey Crawford. The Albion High School AP Statistics Class presented valuable information to Community Action of Orleans and Genesee last week as part of their service learning project. The students presented information on each program that Community Action offers. They analyzed surveys for Community Action and the Head Start Program and gave Community Action suggestions on ways to improve their website and offices. They also came up with a marketing plan which included creating a poster that lists all of Community Action’s programs to be displayed around the community in places like laundromats, grocery stores, and the library. The students did a great job in researching Community Action and presenting new ideas for improvement! The LINK The annual Grade 4 Pioneer Day has been a ritual at Albion Elementary School for the last 30-plus years. It is the highlight of many fourth graders’ school year and connects classroom learning to history in a significant way. Students dress in period clothing and rotate through stations lasting 35 minutes throughout the day. Because of the rotation, they are able to participate in many activities that bring new meaning to how the early residents of our country lived. The stations represent a wide variety of activities that help students appreciate early American culture. Activities range from doing laundry with a washboard, ironing with a hot cast iron, butter churning, weaving and making useful everyday items out of tin. Students also got a peek at what school would have been like in pioneer days. July 2016 8 ALBION CENTRAL SCHOOL --- Achievement, Character, and Success for Life! Triple “C” Awards C.A.S. The award recognizes the qualities of Character, Courage and Commitment in New York’s students and is sponsored by the N.Y.S. Attorney General’s Office. Elementary School Principal, Rachel Curtin said, “It gives me great pleasure to introduce the students who have received this special recognition for their talents or abilities. This year the award was presented to two students in the Elementary School. I would like to present the Triple ‘C’ Award to third-grade students Zackary Baron and Codey Warney." Quoting from Zackary’s nomination form, his teacher Miss Komendat said, “Zack is an exceptionally responsible, trustworthy and hardworking third grader. Not only is he someone his classmates can rely on, I can rely on him as a teacher too! He is always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone who needs it, and he shows incredible leadership qualities due to his positive attitude, excellence in academics and his warm smile and personality. He works hard every day and balances other activities, such as our school’s Student Leadership Council, Boy Scouts and baseball. For all of this and millions of reason more, Zack is the perfect recipient of this year’s Triple “C” Award.” Codey Warney was nominated by his third-grade teacher Miss Cammarata. She said, “From the second Codey walked into my room, he has worked his little tail off to be the best student he can be! Codey is a leader because he is fearless. No matter what is asked of him, or how challenging it is for him, he always stays determined. He asks questions when he needs help, reads aloud to his teachers so he can better understand what is being asked of him, follows my lead with every task I give him and is working hard to increaser his reading level with his peers and has become a great writer because he puts his heart and mind to work. Codey inspires our whole class each day with his amazing effort. He perseveres and goes above and beyond my expectations daily. Codey has the courage of superman, the character of a saint and the commitment of a true scholar.” Congratulations to Zackary and Codey! The Community as Schools (C.A.S.) program located at the Villages of Orleans (formerly the Orleans County Nursing Home) celebrated “Moving Up Day” for eight students on June 13, 2016. The program is an alternative education program for students who show promise but are struggling in the traditional high school setting. Students are given a chance to succeed in an environment that is completely different. This innovative program has earned rave reviews for its ability to intervene and get these students back on track. C.A.S. students attend classes in the nursing home and interact with residents and staff on a daily basis. Some residents have experience that is helpful to students and oftentimes the connection between students and residents is very deep. This interaction with staff and residents is what makes the program so unique. The program is facilitated by High School Teacher Brennan Meakin and High School Guidance Counselor Sally Schmidt. Meakin congratulated the students for overcoming many of the challenges they faced throughout their High School career and told them how proud he was of their accomplishments. Meakin said, “This program allows students to shine in a different environment and encourages ‘at risk’ students to look beyond their current situation. It stresses the importance of staying in school and the value of graduation.” High School Production of “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat” is recognized by the Rochester Broadway Theatre League Fifth-Grade Class Celebrates “Moving Up” Day (L-R): The award winners from the ceremony: Emilie Sitzer (Essay winner), Yoselin Lauro Ramirez (Butts Award Winner), Maya Knaak (Butts Award Winner), Jillian Ray (Essay Winner), Logan Graham (Butts Award Winner), Dylan Narburgh (Essay Winner & Tap Thy Foot Award Winner), Ashley Mowart (Butts Award Winner), Brianna Sample (Essay Winner), Dallas Ecker (Butts Award & Tap Thy Foot Award) and McKenzie Olmstead (Essay Winner). They thanked their teachers and staff members for helping them grow both socially and academically throughout the last six years. The essays were judged by staff members and each classroom had a winner declared. Essay winners were: These students read their piece to the entire class, faculty and many guests who were present at the assembly. Alternate essay winners from each class read the names of each classmate as they were congratulated for completing the first six years of their academic career. Alternate essay winners were; Bailey Blanchard, William Freeman, Leeanna Montanarella, Austin Aman, Annabella Salisbury and Shaky Luna Colon. Also presented at the ceremony was the Donald Butts Memorial Award. Mr. Donald Butts was principal of the Ronald L. Sodoma Elementary School for many years. Mr. Butts took great pride in education and the importance of good character and behavior. He was very proud of the school’s program of “Respect, Responsibility and Optimism.” Although Mr. Butts has passed away, we are honored to be able to recognize students who live their lives as positive role models through the Donald Butts Memorial Award. This award was presented to one student from each 5th grade class. This year the winners were Yoselin Lauro Ramirez, Maya Knaak, Logan Graham, Ashley Mowart and Dallas Ecker. The LINK Photo compliments of Photos By Bruce and Associates The Rochester Broadway Theatre League recently recognized the Albion High School production of “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat” with several Stars of Tomorrow Awards. The program is dedicated to supporting the process of growth and learning. It encourages commitment, discipline and teamwork while acknowledging excellence. The theatre league sends out adjudicators to judge performances at schools that wish to participate. Once the adjudicators compile their information, they nominate the top schools. The top schools then compete against each other for the coveted awards. The A.C.S. High School performance of ”Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat” received the award for Outstanding Musical, Outstanding Acting Ensemble, Outstanding Dance Ensemble, Outstanding Singing Ensemble, Outstanding Student Orchestra and Outstanding Production Crew. This is a considerable accomplishment and speaks volumes about the quality of the drama department’s productions which continue to astound audiences. Albion Central School District competes with many larger schools with more resources for these awards. We are very proud to have had six individual students selected for Stars of Tomorrow awards through the Theatre League. They were: Kyle Thaine for Outstanding Lead Actor, Angela Tarricone for Outstanding Supporting Actress and Cheyenna Eagle for Outstanding Supporting Actress. Jillian Doyle, Elijah VanEpps and Stephen Williams were recognized with a “Feather in your Cap” award. Congratulations to the entire production crew, actors, musicians and directors on an amazing show! July 2016 ALBION CENTRAL SCHOOL --- Achievement, Character, and Success for Life! Purple Eagles Marching Band Enjoys another Successful Season 9 AHS Marching Band Travels to Virginia Beach Pictured above are the front few ranks of the Albion Purple Eagles Marching Band during the 150th Memorial Day Anniversary Grand Parade, in Waterloo, on May 28, 2016. After exhibition performances in Virginia Beach, VA and in the Rochester Lilac Festival Parade, the Albion Marching Band started their competition season off on the right foot by posting a win at the Seneca Falls Pageant of Bands on May 21. The Purple Eagles’ score of 93.5 was tops in their division, earning them the first place award in Open Class by more than 8 points. On Sat., May 28, the band had the honor of participating in the 150th Memorial Day Anniversary Grand Parade in Waterloo, N.Y. Waterloo is the “birthplace” of the Memorial Day holiday, which was first observed there in 1866. Performances followed in Albion’s Memorial Day parade on May 30, and then in the Nunda Fun Days parade on June 2, where they missed first place by just 4/10th of a point! As always, the Purple Eagles finished the season with the hometown Strawberry Festival Parade on June 11, where they were crowned “Best Band,” in competition with Batavia and Pembroke. The Purple Eagles’ competitive program utilizes the “open class,” or “5-minute rule.” In a nutshell, this competition format allows for any formation and direction changes within the judging area, the only stipulation being a five minute time limit between the first note of music or movement and the last. “It’s almost like a field show on the street, except you have the added element of making an entrance 150 feet down-street, developing the show from left to right, progressing toward a logical exit from the 300’ judging area” Mr. Thaine explained. “It’s not intended to be a ‘Park & Play,’ where bands simply march into the area, stop and play a song, then march away. There’s much more to it than that. Judges look for an artistic development of the whole show, from beginning to end, with a drill that compliments the musical program.” Bands are judged on music performance, visual design and execution, and general effect. Some brass and woodwind players take a knee, while members of the drum line perform. The huge statue of King Neptune, a Virginia Beach landmark, looms over them. After months of planning, fund-raising, and practice, the Purple Eagles marching band traveled to Virginia Beach, VA from April 28 - May 1, 016, for their bi-annual performance trip. Since many of the same students are involved in both chorus and marching band, the groups alternate trip years. While in Virginia, the band performed for a crowd of residents and tourists alike on the Virginia Beach boardwalk, with the Atlantic Ocean as a beautiful backdrop. During the trip, the band members toured the Norfolk Naval Station, home of the US Navy’s Atlantic fleet, and attended a live performance of the Tony-winning musical comedy, The Mystery of Edwin Drood. Students also enjoyed a formal dinner & dancing cruise along the Elizabeth River and Chesapeake Bay, visited The Nauticus Maritime Museum, toured a decommissioned WWII battleship, and spent an afternoon zip-lining through the trees at the Virginia Beach Aquarium’s Adventure Park. While the water temperature was still a bit chilly for swimming, many students took advantage of their hotel’s location right on the waterfront to walk along the sandy beach, wade in the water, and explore the shops along the boardwalk. And, since every hotel room overlooked the water, students were treated to wonderful ocean views anytime they looked out the window! According to Mr. Thaine, the AHS Director of Bands, these performance trips are an important educational experience for students, some of whom have not been outside of New York State before. Middle School Students are “On A Roll” Albion’s program was entitled “The Piano Man” and featured music by Billy Joel. It opened with his “We didn’t Start the Fire” before transitioning into “Piano Man.” “My Life” was followed by “Only the Good Die Young,” and this season’s closer was “Just the Way You Are.” Soloists were: Kyle Thaine on trombone, Alyce Miller on trumpet, and Dan Beam on mallets. The Drum Majors this year were seniors Meredith Patterson and Zach Shaffer. New After School Reading Program Popcorn and Paper Backs: The Garden Edition Albion HS and MS Multicultural Clubs teamed up under the direction of their advisors, Mrs. Della Morales (HS Library Media Specialist) and Mrs. Tina Burgett (ES & MS Art Teacher) for an eight-week after-school reading program centered on literacy and art. The program ran every Wednesday for eight weeks from 4-5 p.m., in the Children’s Library at the Hoag Library. The focus was making a community connection through literacy, art, popcorn, and gardening. The purpose was to target elementary students that lived in and around the libraries neighborhood. The sessions were all very well attended with 12-15 children joining each week. The program concluded with a planting celebration and ice cream. Each child that attended received a certificate of participation and a plant to take in the clay pot that they made during one of the sessions. Plans are already being made for a follow-up session during the fall whose theme will be: Popcorn, Paper Backs and Pumpkins. The LINK Front row: Nicholas Garcia, Rebecca Fugate, Kayli Callard, Emily Richardson, Misty Dawn Mullins, Isabele Sunday, and Marvin Russ. Back row: Samantha Johnson, Ethan Ferchen, Michale Stone, Ann Faery, Mrs. Brown, and Mrs. Berg. Students in Mrs. Berg’s classroom were honored at the June Board of Education meeting for their Character and Leadership. These students were instrumental in creating and implementing a new program in the Middle School called the “On A Roll” program. The “On A Roll” program began as a new way to recognize students for making good choices both in and out of the classroom. Teachers nominate students and the following day the students are announced and called down outside the office to get their “On A Roll slip” and a treat. As the students stop to get their slips they are able to find out who nominated them and in many cases why they were nominated. The students then take their slips write their name and homeroom number on the slip and place it in the “We make good Choices Jar” located in the main office. We keep the jar in the office as a reminder to students that we expect good choices and so they can see the jar fill up! At the end of each month we draw final prize winners out of the jar. One of the names drawn is our Student of the Month and that student receives special privileges, a prize, and pizza with the principal. Other winners receive a variety of prizes from first in lunch line, a sweet treat, pencils, posters, Subway coupons, group lunch with the principal, school sporting event tickets and school play tickets. In addition, students that were nominated for that month are given a special privilege, such as wearing a hat to school. Mrs. Berg said, “We want to celebrate our kids and all the hard work and good choices they are making in our school every day. The “On A Roll” program helps highlight those students who may not be on the academic Honor Roll, but are working incredible hard. It allows teachers to recognize a student and encourage that student to keep working. In order to fund the “On A Roll program” we have turned to the community, asking for their support. Subway graciously donated free sub coupons and other items. The rest of the funding is provided by the teachers through a dress down day once a month. This program has definitely helped shine a light on students making good choices both academically and social and is also helping to foster relationships between teachers and students.” July 2016 10 ALBION CENTRAL SCHOOL --- Achievement, Character, and Success for Life! Albion Elementary Celebrates Flag Day AMS Seventh Graders Commemorate Orleans County Civil War Veterans On Fri., June 10, the Albion Elementary School celebrated Flag Day with patriotic music performed by each grade level. This is the second year in which students were able to invite members of their families who had served in the U.S. Military to be honored at this patriotic event. The assembly began with flag bearers from each classroom in the Elementary School proceeding into the gym displaying the American Flag. The veterans and their students followed close behind while the Elementary Honors Band played “America the Beautiful” and the crowd sang our National Anthem. The crowd then recited “The Pledge of Allegiance” led by Elementary School Principal Mr. Curtain. The Elementary School students have been preparing for this celebration all winter long in their music classes. Each grade level performed a patriotic song for the rest of the school. The kindergarten students performed “Our Beautiful Flag,” first-grade students performed “America,” the second grade led the group in “God Bless America,” the third grade performed “America the Beautiful,” the fourth grade sang “You’re a Grand Old Flag” and the fifth grade performed “This Land Is Your Land.” The entire student body sang the Albion Alma Mater together. Joining each class in the celebration was the Elementary School Honors Band who played “All Hail the Conquering Hero” and “Air of Nobility.” A special slide show presentation highlighted the veterans present and relatives of students who served in the armed services. Together, the students, veterans, and special guests sang “God Bless the U.S.A.” The Character Education Committee led by Cathy Hryhorenko was responsible for the addition of the piece honoring Veterans at the Flag Day ceremony. She said, “This beautiful ceremony, which is always emotional, proved even more meaningful with the addition of the Veterans.” During the 2015-16 school year the seventh-grade service-learning classes were busy with several Civil War projects, culminating in a dedication ceremony commemorating Orleans County Civil War veterans at Mt. Albion Cemetery. The dedication included a bronze plaque affixed to a piece of Medina Sandstone, a solid granite planter urn, and a sugar maple tree. The plaque read, “Honoring Orleans County Civil War Veterans, “A New Birth of Freedom.” The entire seventh grade, numerous area dignitaries, veterans groups, historians, and community members attended the event. Service-learning teacher Tim Archer called the year’s activities a great learning experience for the students. “The ultimate sacrifice our veterans made to give us today’s freedoms,” Archer said, “offer our children a shining example of living for something greater than themselves.” During the year students attended local government meetings, researched church and cemetery archives, visited educational institutions, petitioned government officials, worked alongside historical and veterans groups, and organized three ceremonies. Class guests included historians, re-enactors, authors, and librarians. In the fall students spent many Saturday mornings cataloguing the over 250 Civil War veterans who are buried at Mt. Albion. Approximately 160 of those had old, rusty cast iron Grand Army of the Republic, or GAR, markers that needed repainting. After many long hours, the seventh graders completed the task. The oxidized bronze markers, like those in the Civil War section, were left untouched. The Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Monument (tower) in the back of Mt. Albion lists 466 names of Orleans County soldiers who lost their lives in the war. Classes catalogued the faded and worn names to compile a master list. Through the research, 47 other names were found from primary sources that probably should have been etched into those marble panels, but were not. Out of respect to them, their names were read during the dedication program. Last fall students petitioned Washington, D.C., for an upright marble headstone for Barre native and Civil War veteran, John Frost. He was buried in an unmarked grave at St. Joseph’s Cemetery on Brown Rd. in 1915. A ceremony to dedicate the new headstone was held April 30th. Through the generosity of the Orleans County Department of History, the Orleans County Historical Association, and the 140th Re-enactment Group, the classes plan to acquire a New York State historical marker for Clarendon native Herbert Charles Taylor. Taylor is the only known Orleans County Civil War soldier to fight and die at the Battle of Gettysburg. He is buried at Hillside Cemetery in Clarendon. A special ceremony dedicating that marker will be held in the fall. Throughout the year, the service-learning classes also exchanged pen pal letters with Middle School students at the Gettysburg Area Middle School. They learned about their school, community, and life in an area known for its historical significance. Poetry Winners (L-R): Front Row: MaryJane Ryan Micey, Bella Cooper and Tristan Tilbe. Back Row: Skye Moyer, Ivory Smith and Julia Fuller. Students also competed in a poetry contest. Each grade level wrote patriotic poems in honor of Flag Day. The poems were judged by Elementary School Teacher Mr. VanCamp. Each grade level winner read their poem to the rest of the school during the assembly. Poetry winners were: Bella Cooper (Kindergarten), Mary Jane Ryan-Mincy (1st grade), Tristen Tilbe (2nd grade), Ivory Smith (3rd grade), Julia Fuller (4th grade) and Skye Moyer (5th grade). Albion High School Middle & School Students Attend the 11th Annual Greater Rochester Teen Book Festival held at Nazareth College Artwork Winner Emma McQuillan Also recognized during the Flag Day celebration were students for their artistic achievement. Emma McQuillan was chosen as the recipient of the Patrick DiGirolamo award. The award is presented to a primary school student who has demonstrated an exceptional ability or interest in art. The award is donated by the children of the graduating class of 1987. Emma also had her theme and design chosen for the 5th Grade MovingUp Day t-shirts. These shirts are worn by every fifth grader during the “Moving Up” day ceremony. Congratulations to all of our winners! The LINK On Sat., May 14, 18 middle and high school students along with Mrs. Dawn Squicciarini (MS 8th Grade), Miss Karen Spierdowis (HS English) and Mrs. Della Morales (HS Librarian) attended the Teen Book Festival held at Nazareth College where 32 authors came and shared not only their latest releases but tips on writing and publishing. This event came on the heels of Author Charles Benoit’s visit last month in the high school library, where he conducted two writers’ workshops, promoted the festival, and told the students he looked forward to seeing them at the festival. Students were able to attend up to four sessions with the authors of their choice, purchase books, win raffles, and interact with teens from a variety of school districts from all over Western New York. When asked about his experience at TBF, Freshman Ryan Grandy said, “It was so cool and very entertaining. It was a great way to spend a Saturday. I can’t wait to go back next year.” Not only students but parents felt the same: (from a parent): “Just wanted to thank you for encouraging and spending your Saturday supervising the TBF. Emily had a wonderful time and talked about it all weekend.” It was an amazing event and plans are already in the works for next year.
