Normally in the fall, we are
planning a BBQ, chili cook-off
or pasta night. This year, we
are changing things up and
hosting an all alumni family
pancake breakfast on Saturday,
November 2.
features
One of our goals this year is to
grow our Association and bridge
our younger generation of alumni with our older generation.
The pancake breakfast will do just that. It will be a great family
event too. Chris Cakes St. Louis will be doing some fancy
pancake flipping, and we will have a balloon artist, crafts, and
face painting. This event is totally free to our alumni and you can
even bring your family or a friend. I hope you join us for what
will be a very fun event!
Class of 2013 Reflections . . . . . . 12

This past June we had another successful alumni happy hour, so
we have decided to host several throughout the year in different
locations. This fall we will be heading to J. Bucks in Clayton for
drinks and appetizers. These events are a great way to network
and catch up with old friends. Plus, the first drink is on us!
This year is going to be a great one with lots of new events and
new faces. At the end of the last school year we welcomed 29
graduating sixth graders into our Association.
Our Steering Committee has a few new faces as well. I would
like to thank Brian Collard (’87), outgoing vice chair, for all of
his insight and hard work over the last couple of years. Lisa
Schwartz Engel (’84) is our new vice chair, and Judy Rogers Trout
(’70) is the new Secretary/Treasurer. Also, we have welcomed ten
new members to our Alumni Association Steering Committee:
Bill Adams (’69), Julie Buck Brooks (’84), Ryan Carlie (’96),
Andrew Finefield (’98), David Gast (’42), Mike Johnson (’85),
Kimberle Hesker Kovac (’87), Jenni Serot (’98), Chris Benedict
Skale (’88), and Jamie Stuart (’97). I look forward to working with
them, as well as our entire Association over the next year.
I encourage you to get involved with Rossman School by liking
the Alumni Facebook page or attending our pancake breakfast or
happy hour this fall.
Sincerely,
Michelle Farberman Quatmann (’89)

Alumni Archive Established
Wander into the Alumni Commons during your next visit to Rossman and you
will encounter an array of intriguing artifacts from throughout the school’s 96-year
history. Originally donated in 1998, the
floor to ceiling display case along the wall
is now overflowing with old photos and
trophies, vintage jerseys and schoolbooks,
early costumes and playbills, and even
co-founder Mary B. Rossman’s baptismal
certificate.
Generous donations from the Rossman
community, combined with the hard
work done by alumnus Cliff Saxton (’58)
and Director of Development Cathleen
Wyckoff, who collected, organized and
arranged the artifacts this past summer,
has enabled Rossman to establish a formal
archive to preserve the school’s history.
The highlight of the collection is a brown
ledger, which lists the name and grade
placement of every student since the
school began. A replica of the “Brown
Book” is exhibited in the Alumni Commons display.
In addition to the commons display,
hundreds of additional photos and other
memorabilia have been logged, organized
and tucked away for safekeeping.
If you would like to arrange a visit to
view the Rossman archives or have an
item you would like to donate, contact
Cathleen Wyckoff at (314) 434-5877, ext.

RSAA Facebook Page Surpasses 100 Fans
From event notifications, photos and videos, to news about remarkable alumni, to
updates on current Rossman happenings,
the Rossman School Alumni Association
Facebook page is helping alumni connect
with the school and each other.
“I am so blessed to have been able to attend Rossman,” says Judy Rogers Trout
(’70). “It is hard nowadays with our busy
lives to find a way to stay in touch with
things that are important to us. I feel the
RSAA Facebook page is a simple and fun
way to do so.”
More than 130 people have joined the
alumni Facebook community since the
page was launched last October. Along
with a growing fan base, content is
ever-evolving as well. Last summer, the
Association began invoking memories
and igniting conversations with “Throwback Thursdays,” a weekly unveiling of a
photo from the Rossman archive.
In addition to reliving and remembering
the past, the RSAA Facebook page is a
valuable tool for sharing the present.
“I encourage alumni to use it to share
their lives with others,” Judy says.
“Everyone likes to hear their classmates’
news. It helps strengthen the special bond
formed during our time at Rossman.”

Rossman Players Retell
Classic Carroll Story
Fifteen Rossman fifth and sixth graders
delighted audiences March 12 and 13, with
their production of “Wonder in Aliceland,”
a fun, quirky musical retelling of the classic
Lewis Carroll story. Rossman students were
joined by children and parents from five area
schools for the delightful journey down the
rabbit hole, and an evening performance
entertained parents and members of the
Rossman community.
“It’s easy to nurture creativity with a group
of young actors as smart and open as this
one, a group that always wants to do more,
be more, learn more and contribute more and
more ideas,” said director Susan Rasch from
the COCA Theatre Residency Program, an
afterschool program that enables fifth and
sixth grade students to learn the basics of
acting and theatrical production on a weekly
basis with professional artist-instructors.
Clockwise from top left: the White Rabbit (Ellie Woodley, 5th) sings “I’m Late”; Tweedledum
(Meredith Goldberg, 5th) and Tweedledee (Lauren Wallace, 5th) confront Big Alice (Janie
Shanahan, 5th); the Queen of Hearts (Sriya Bandi, 5th) shows her anger; the Mad Hatter
(Nate Oglesby, 5th), Dormouse (Varsha Krishnan, 5th) and March Hare (Stanley Ding, 5th)
celebrate an un-birthday.

Rossman Community Honors Beloved
Social Studies Teacher, Mary Jane Carissimi
The end of the 2012-2013 school year
was a bittersweet occasion for the
entire Rossman community as the
school helped fourth through sixth
grade social studies teacher Mary Jane
Carissimi celebrate her retirement after
13 years at Rossman.
Thirty-four students, selected at random from more than 60 who volunteered, performed in a surprise historythemed goodbye assembly on May 21.
Mrs. Carissimi was all smiles as the
production opened with the recitation
of the Gettysburg Address, the work
of one of her favorite historical figures.
The narration that followed, captured
all that is special about the treasured
teacher and all that will be missed:
“Once upon a time in the land of Creve
Coeur lived a teacher who resided in
the magnificent Castle of Rossman. She
was known to all as Mrs Carissimi, a
lovely, gentle, kind-hearted lady that
reflected all that was moral and pure of
heart in the world and one that could
always find the good in others.”
The production concluded with “appearences” by influential men and
women from throughout history, heartfelt messages by Head of School Pat
Shipley and sixth grade teachers Jim
Holmes and Annie Menees, and the
presentation of a new American Flag
for the Pratt Performing Arts Center in
honor of Mrs. Carissimi, a gift to
Rossman from the Class of 2013.
A reception was held in the evening,
where parents, alumni and other
members of the Rossman community
gathered to wish Mrs. Carissimi well
in her future endeavors. Mrs. Carissimi
touched the lives of more than 400 students during her years at Rossman.
Below from top: Mrs. Carissimi watches as
students recite the Gettysburg Address; Rossman
School alumni share their well wishes with Mrs.

Message from t
he Head
Dear Rossman Alumni,
We are always considering how we can
better connect with past,
current and prospective families, students
and friends in order to
strengthen these relationships and keep our
community informed
about the wonderful
things that are always going on here. Recently, we launched two new online tools
through which we hope to better communicate with those who mean so much to us,
like our fabulous alumni.
In August, we launched the Rossman
School Facebook page at www.facebook.com/
rossmanschool. Our vision is for this page to
serve as an engaging forum where members of the Rossman community can learn
more about the day-to-day Rossman experience, share their own Rossman stories
and grow closer together. Additionally, we
plan to use this powerful social medium
to offer prospective parents an informal,
interactive resource where they can discover what makes Rossman special. While
the RSAA page is designed exclusively for
alumni, the Rossman School page will be
relevant to the larger Rossman community.
I encourage you to “like” both pages and
share them with family and friends.
Also new this year is the Rossman School
Blog. With articles, photos and videos from
a variety of voices — from teachers, to parents, to students — we hope to share even
more of Rossman’s story plus act as a valuable resource for St. Louis-area parents. I
encourage any alum who is interested in
staying current on what is happening at
Rossman or receiving parenting tips from
our experienced faculty to visit our blog at
www.rossmanschool.org/welcome-to-rossman/
blog and subscribe.
We look forward to connecting with you
through these new mediums this year.
Sincerely,
Patricia A. Shipley
Head of School

Class of ’07 Reunites for Annual Spirit Day Basketball Game
Twenty-two members of the Class of 2007 returned to
Rossman this spring to take on an energetic team of fifth
and sixth graders in the 26th annual Spirit Day basketball
game. Representing nine high schools, the alumni made
a valiant and gracious effort despite being faced with 12
wacky challenges.
Imaginatively designed by physical education teachers
Jenna Babcock and Larry Huusko, this year’s alumni
handicaps included “Togetherness Basketball,” in which
the alumni had to traverse the court in pairs inside a hula
hoop; “Spring Break Ball,” during which they dressed in
beach attire and endeavored to keep a beach ball in the
air while trying to score; and “Balloon Basketball,” which
required players to hold a balloon between their legs and
pause to blow a new one each time it “mysteriously”
popped.
Working together to overcome these obstacles — and
amusing audience members in the process — the Class of
2007 managed to accumulate six points by halftime. Those
points would be their last however. In the second half, the
talented Rossman team combined a flawless defense with
5
an outstanding offense, and when the final whistle blew
the alumni’s six hard-earned points were no match for the
fifth and sixth graders’ final score of 63.
After the game, the alumni gathered in the Ball Library
for a reception to reminisce about the past and discuss
future plans. “My favorite part of the event was getting to
see my old classmates, as well as the school after all these
years,” said Brianna Souers.
Alex Martin agreed. “I most enjoyed seeing all of my old
classmates and how they have changed.”

greeted guests as they entered the gymnasium doors,” said organizational
chair Lucie Dempsey. “It really got everyone in the spirit. As soon as the
horn sounded, no one could help but cheer for their mouse. It was good
friendly competition that kept the mood fun.” The event, which also

Delmar Campus Reunion Brings Early
Grads Together at Conway Campus
Alumni who attended Rossman School at its original campus
on Delmar Boulevard were invited to a special luncheon in
May to experience Rossman today and reminisce about the
Rossman of yesterday. Photos and artifacts from the
Rossman archive decorated the Ball Library, bringing back
many memories for those in attendance.
After lunch, Head of School Pat Shipley shared fun facts and
historical highlights from Rossman’s years on Delmar. She
also described the school today and gave guests a peek at
what is to come. Following Mrs. Shipley’s remarks, the Senior
Kindergarten class treated the group to a performance of
“Proud to Be an American” and Director of Admission

“We learned so much from our alumni as they all shared
similar memories about their teachers, the blacktop, the carryall, and especially Miss Rossman and Miss Schwaner,” said
Director of Development Cathleen Wyckoff. “A few of our
alumni had never been to the new campus, so it was wonderful to be able to show them Rossman today.”

Class of 2013 Reflects on Treasured Times
Before receiving their diplomas, the Class of 2013 shared
reflections from their treasured days at Rossman School.
Together, these heartfelt thoughts and colorful memories paint
a precious picture of what it is like to be a Rossman student.
“Rossman has instilled in me an avid love for reading and
curiosity for life-long learning ... My eight years of Rossman
education have enriched me with values of hard work,
perseverance and organization. They have helped me grow to
be confident and strong, yet compassionate toward others.”
—Divya S.
“Many people have touched my life. I love all of the teachers.
You can really tell that they love what they are doing. They
are all so caring and supportive. I could not have wished for
teachers better than the ones I had at Rossman.” —Shaila L.
“I have grown from a kid to a young man ... Rossman has
done a great job in preparing me for secondary school and for
life. I’m proud to say that I am a graduate of Rossman.”
—Phillipe R.
“This wonderful place has taught me all it can. Like how to be
an authentic person, never telling lies about myself or anyone
else. That respect goes two ways. To take responsibility, be
kind and do things simply because they’re the right thing to
do. These lessons left me changed for the better.” —Sarah N.
“One of my favorite parts of Rossman is the Rossman
Families. I enjoyed getting to know the students from different
grades through this unique program. I also enjoyed being the
fifth and sixth grade leaders because the younger kids look up
to you.” —Catie A.
“The teachers at Rossman are phenomenal in every way ...
They are kind, friendly and very good role models. They
have taught me so much I think my brain will explode with
one more fact. It makes me feel good to know I am very well
prepared for the years to come.” —Chase W.
“Rossman has taught me that being a leader is good, being
yourself is important and learning can be fun ... Rossman is
where I learned to be the best I can be.” —Allison D.
“I can’t even begin to summarize how great my eight years at
Rossman have been. Everyone here feels like family ... Almost
every day we spend here is full of laughter and happiness,
which makes me realize how lucky I have been to have had
the opportunity to attend this incredible school.” —Lindsay B.
“What I found to really like about Rossman was that the
people around me also liked to learn, so I found that I was not
only learning from the teachers but also from my peers.”
—Nikki S.
“Rossman has been a part of my life for four years and will be
for as long as I live.” —Nico F.
“The qualities I liked best about my friends were that they
always followed the Rossman rules, even if teachers were not
around, and the golden rule was in all of their personalities.
They respected each other and were kind, honest and
responsible.” —Chris H.
“Rossman is a unique school with teachers and faculty who
want every kid to succeed ... They also put in the effort to get
to know every kid in the school really well ... Every member
of the Rossman staff has affected my life in a way I will never
forget.” —Drew H.
“The education I have gained here will help me transition into
secondary school, but the lessons I have learned will stay with
me for the rest of my life.” —Lexi Y.

years, this is the sixth grade year. Exceptions are those years

my mother, Laurian Taylor Singleton (’34) passed away
September 17. She had moved to Florida in 2011 to be near
me and we certainly enjoyed our time with her. She had
very fond memories of Rossman School.”

Giving Guide:
Supporting the Annual Endowment Fund
Soon you will be receiving a formal request to support the Rossman
School Endowment Fund. You may ask yourself, “Why should I give to
Rossman?”
At our Distinguished Alumni Awards Ceremony last year, honoree Derek
Rapp (’74), Mergers and Acquisitions and New Growth Platform Lead at
Monsanto, named off all the teachers he had during his time at Rossman.
To Derek, these special teachers are the people that fostered his love of
learning, encouraged him to succeed even beyond his own expectations,
and influenced him throughout his life. They gave him a foundation, he
cherished the memories, and now he gives back to support the school that
supported him.

It’s Your Turn
To submit news for the next issue of Rossman’s
Alumni Magazine, email us at
[email protected], or fill out the
“It’s Your Turn” form online at
www.rossmanschool.org/alumni.
What do you remember about your time at Rossman? What are your
memories? Who was your favorite teacher?
Do you know that salaries and benefits for faculty and staff make up the
largest piece of the School’s operating budget? Gifts to the endowment
are needed to help offset this expense so Rossman can continue to recruit
and retain the extraordinary teachers that make Rossman so special.
Please consider supporting Rossman School with a gift to this year’s
campaign. Watch the mail for your annual endowment letter or give now
