Worksheet ii) Coastal Formations along the Jurassic Coast: Coastal
feature description
Waves erode notches
into the base of cliffs
that eventually cause
the rock above to
crumble and fall
Softer rock is worn
away easily and
quickly by the waves
to form a wide
sheltered hollow in the
land which can
sometimes contain a
beach
Hard rock erodes
more slowly than soft
rock and juts out into
the sea like the head
of an arrow.
As cliffs continue to
collapse they move
inland leaving behind
a flat bench of rock
Sometimes a cave will
get eroded all the way
through a headland
from one side to
another.
The sea attacks
cracks in the cliff. As
they grow larger the
cracks form into a
large and deep hollow
space in the rock
Eventually an arch will
collapse leaving behind
tall pillars of rock which
have waves on all sides
