GLOBAL CELEBRATIONS OF LIVING AND DYING October 31 and November 3, 2016 M ond ay, Oct ober 3 1 UC Theater 6:00 pm “Life, Death, and Metamorphosis on a Little Known Planet,” by Dr. Kefyn Catley (Biology) and screening of Flight of the Butterflies Dr. Catley will highlight migration patterns of butterflies and other insects such as dragonflies with an explanation of the ecological/ evolutionary aspects of such behavior. This presentation also touches on metamorphosis as an agent of diversification in the larger group of insects that also contains butterflies and the role of many arthropods in decomposition and recycling. Thursday, November 3 Illusions Sessions on Living and Dying 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm “Death Café” with Harris LifePath Palliative Care and Hospice Talking about life and death can be difficult. Come learn about your resources for dealing with life and death while enjoying coffee and delicious desserts. 7:00 pm - 7:30 pm “Representations of Death in Spanish Literature and Art” with Dr. Santiago García-Castañón (World Languages). This presentation will be in Spanish. La muerte es el destino inevitable del ser humano y por tanto es consustancial con la vida. Podría decirse que la muerte es una parte de la vida. En esta presentación se hará un repaso al concepto de la muerte en España desde la Edad Media hasta la actualidad, tal como se refleja en la literatura y las artes. 7:30 pm - 8:00 pm “Day of the Dead” with Garrett Fisher (World Languages) Come learn about this holiday, which is celebrated in Mexico to honor loved ones who have died. 8:00 pm - 8:30 pm “Buddhist Perspectives on Living and Dying” with Dr. Michelle Sorenson (Philosophy and Religion) What do Buddhists think about death? We will discuss the Buddhist view that death is part of the process of what it means to be alive, taking into account the Buddhist idea of the impermanence of all things. We will consider how a Buddhist’s awareness that one does not know when one will die supports living each day with wisdom and compassion. 8:30 pm - 9:00 pm “Faith, Even in Death: Muslim Traditions at the End of Life” with Dr. Colin Shaw, Hospice Chaplain We will explore Muslim traditions regarding death.
