Creative Writing, 2005 Fairleigh Dickinson University Madison, New Jersey M.A. English, 1998 Montclair State University Montclair, New Jersey B.A. English, 1988 Saint Lawrence University Canton, New York PROFESSIONAL HISTORY University of Wisconsin-Fox Valley Asssitant Professor of English (2006-12) Associate Professor of English (2012-present) After a lifetime on the East Coast, my wife and I made the big move to the Midwest to raise our children in Appleton, a place new to us. Most often, I teach creative writing, Shakespeare, and composition. I was elected UWFox faculty senator during my first year. The UW Colleges senate is the self-governance body comprised of faculty, staff, and students spread out among thirteen campuses across the state and represents the interests of just under 20,000 people. In my fourth year, I was elected chair of the Senate Steering Committee, chair of the full senate, chair of the Faculty Council of Senators, and Faculty Representative to the UW System. The chair plans for the four face-to-face meetings per year, and, as you might imagine, the challenge of planning for those large meetings is daunting. Facilities and meals need to be right, of course, but also I prepare the business meetings during which we conduct efficiently and fairly a lot of important work. Each senate meeting runs the full day and is comprised of committee meetings, presentations, a working lunch, various council meetings, and a full senate meeting. The Senate Steering Committee, a group I also chair, meets every other week via conference call, which I lead. Those agendas are packed with important business, as well. As senate chair, I work in concert with UWC administration on long- and shortterm policy goals as well as in the establishment of new programs and revision of existing ones. I am busy many times daily on the phone with faculty, staff, and students answering policy and process questions and solving problems. It is important work and I enjoy it immensely. Gillard c.v. Page 2 of 10 ================================================================== Service UWC Senate Steering Committee Chair (2010-12, .50 FTE) Managed the senate budget, which includes travel, conference calls, staffing backfill, and meeting expenses. Supervised one LTE employee including budget and payroll Planned and presided over two senate retreats, a day and a half of discussions about long-term trends in higher education, the future of the Colleges, and major projects Worked with the nineteen senate committee chairs to efficiently accomplish a great variety of senate business Addressed a major gap in our ability to communicate by moving all senate policies, agendas, minutes, and committee memberships to the web. Previously, senate polices had been buried in Public Folders, out of reach of all but the most intrepid Streamlined communication between senate steering and the various committees by using SharePoint to manage all pending issues; this was a big shift in thinking and process and it worked wonders Expanded the list of those receiving regular communication from the senate chair to include deans, associate deans, and, at times, everyone in the entire UW Colleges Participated in the strategic planning process for the Colleges in 2008 and 2011 Recruited faculty, staff, and students for senate committees Prepared agenda and presided over meetings of the Senate Steering Committee, UW Colleges senate, and Faculty Council of Senators Shepherded proposed amendments through committees and the full senate Wrote new sections and extensively updated old sections of The Senate Leaders Handbook Wrote bi-weekly reports for senate steering, senate, and general distribution Wrote an annual report UW System Vice President for Academic Affairs Search and Screen (2011-12) Nominated by UWC provost and named by the UW System president to this important search the UWSA VPAA is the chief academic officer for the entire 26-campus UW System UW-Fox Valley Foundation Board of Directors (2011- ) Served as a leader of a group that raises money for student scholarships, to support faculty professional development, and for special campus projects member of the Development Committee, where we plan events to fundraise and friend-raise on campus and in the community Gillard c.v. Page 3 of 10 ================================================================== UWC Faculty Council of Senators Chair (2010-12) Was ambitious with this somewhat ill-defined group and prodded them to take a much greater leadership role within the Colleges Crafted resolutions around various important issues, including institutional priorities and faculty compensation UW System English Conference Planning Group Chair (2009-10) Planned the third ever gathering of English departments from across the fourteen institutions of the University of Wisconsin system Solicited panel and paper proposals Planned all logistics, including meals and travel Put on a good show for the hundred or so folks who showed up UWC English Department Planning Committee Chair (2008) This is usually a pretty easy job: reserve a room, plan for lunch, etc. But I gave it a very different feel: I planned for a two-day meeting, the bulk of which would be my colleagues and me collaborating on fourteen academic panels as part of the Fox Cities Book Festival. That took some work to accomplish, part of which was cultivating buy-in within my department, but in the end, we offered a rich literary experience to our community while at the same time forging stronger professional bonds among us. Within a year, I had been named associate director of the University Honors Program and had been asked to teach a variety of literature courses. I also taught the University Honors Seminar, a course in research methods that resulted in a poster presentation and lecture series for the entire university community. During my third year, I was asked to lead the Freshman Intensive Studies program. 115 students who would otherwise not meet FDU admission requirements are admitted annually to the FIS program. These students are supported in math, writing, and social science. The director establishes and hires staff for about fifteen sections devoted to FIS students. As director, I advised students throughout the year and ran programming aimed toward student success. I managed a budget in excess of $150,000 and supervised a staff of four. Gillard c.v. I had the students for a few hours and took them out into the 600 acres and surprised them with what we found. An absolutely ideal early-career teaching job to have. When something didn’t go as well as I hoped, I knew that the kids were leaving shortly and I could start fresh with the next group. A fun job and an excellent education in its own right. St Patrick’s School Seventh and Eighth Grade Teacher (1993-94) I did my best here, but this school, located in the toughest neighborhood in Boston (Roxbury), was not an ideal first teaching job. On the plus side, every classroom after St. Pat’s has seemed sedate and productive by comparison. Chocolate Popcorn Company Production (1989-1992) I worked for two years at this ancient and now defunct company in Kingston, Pennsylvania. About twenty-five of us made caramel corn and popcorn balls. I worked the popping room and mixed the batches of sugar, corn syrup, oils, and flavorings in just the right mixtures. I learned more about mechanics and steam that I ever thought I would know. I also heard the stories of men who fought in World War 2, Korea, and Viet Nam while we all made popcorn treats together. The warehouse—floor to ceiling with boxes of popcorn—was where my band set up each night to practice… Gillard c.v.
