Please request a space for lunch in the museum
or Usher Gallery when you make your booking.
On fine days it is possible to have a picnic lunch
on the lawns of the Usher Gallery grounds.

MUSEUM VISITS
The Investigate schools programme received the
Sandford Award in 2010 for quality and excellence in
heritage education. The programme is designed to
engage your pupils with hands-on activity and create a
lively stimulus for further study. The programme is
flexible and we will try to accommodate your needs
wherever possible. Please talk to us about how to get
the most from your visit.
Gift shop
The museum has a well-stocked gift shop
with lots of items under £2.00. School
parties are welcome in small groups with
accompanied adults.

USHER GALLERY VISITS
Investigate Art is a programme of workshops and
resources designed to develop children’s visual literacy
and ignite their creativity. The programme includes
hands-on activities in the gallery and exploration of
materials and techniques in the learning studio.

courtyard door, directly into the coats and bags
storage area. For art workshops go to Usher
Gallery reception. A member of the team will be
waiting to welcome you. The group leader will
be asked to sign in the group.

When we have taken your booking requirements,
we will send you a booking form to complete
requesting a £25.00 deposit per workshop. Once
we receive your deposit the booking is
confirmed. Please bring a cheque made payable
to ‘Lincolnshire County Council’ for the amount
outstanding on the day of your visit. Where
possible, please book at least 3 weeks in advance.
Recommended ratios of adults are 1:10 for KS2
and 1:8 for KS1
Costs: £3.50 per pupil for a two hour
morning workshop
£3.00 per pupil for a one and a half hour
afternoon session
Access
All floors and spaces in the museum are fully
accessible to wheelchair users.
Independent Visits
You are very welcome to visit the museum or
Usher Gallery independently with your class.
Please let us know when you would like to visit
and we will send you a guideline sheet.

The Collection Museum and
Usher Art Gallery in Lincoln
There is a timeline tour suitable for KS2 pupils
and their teachers to use whilst in the permanent
gallery of the museum. For schools visiting the
Usher Gallery there are full downloadable
resources for the six topics covered in the Gallery
led workshops.

Loan Boxes
Loans Boxes are available for all the subjects we
cover for a cost of £4.00 per week. The boxes
contain a mixture of real and replica objects for
handling and display together with information,
photographs and suggested classroom activities
supporting Key Stage Two curriculum. For further

Coats and Bags
On arrival, your coats and bags can be stored
safely in the education suite at the museum or
the Clore Studio at the Usher Gallery
Toilet facilities
There are toilets designated only to school
groups in the education suite of the museum.
There are public toilets at the Usher Gallery.

Curriculum-linked Workshops for KS1 and KS2
Our staff-led museum workshops are available on Tuesday,
Wednesday or Thursday, Usher Gallery workshops take place
on Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday throughout the year,
subject to availability. Wherever possible, activities can be
adapted to suit your needs. Please contact a member of
the education team to discuss this.

Viking Medley all-day workshop
Ideal for two classes. Includes a tour of the
extensive collection of Roman artefacts, a
selection of crafts and a visit to the Big Dig.

Romans at Home
Viking Invaders
Find out about everyday life in Roman Britain
and Roman Lincoln through handling and
looking at real and replica objects. Make a clay
lamp or face pot and take a visit to the Big Dig
room where children can discover Roman
objects for themselves.
Find out about the Invaders who came from the
north. Take a staff-led tour, handle replica
objects and make Viking beads. Discover Viking
objects in the Big Dig.
Roman Lincoln
Discover how the Romans shaped the city of
Lindum Colonia during the Roman occupation,
and learn what remains can still be seen around
the city today. Activities include a gallery tour
with our staff, shopping at the Roman market,
and a craft activity based on Roman jewellery.
Roman Army
You are soldiers of the IX legion. Gaius Valerius
is your Standard Bearer. Will you make a good
soldier? Handle replica weapons and armour,
learn Roman marching, make a collage shield
or collage dagger & scabbard as seen in the
museum gallery.
Roman Invasion
Compare life before and after the Roman
Invasion. Find out what changes the Romans
brought. Activities include a gallery tour and
two practical activities based on Ancient British
crafts and Roman military equipment.

surviving evidence. Take a tour, go Viking

Anglo-Saxon Medley all-day workshop
Ideal for two classes. Includes a tour of the
artefacts, selection of crafts, object handling
and a visit to the Big Dig.
Learn about how the Ancient Greeks have
influenced our every day life through language,
democracy, architecture, theatre and the
Olympic Games. Take a tour of the gallery
viewing real objects, handle replica objects,
and make relevant crafts.
Anglo-Saxon Settlers
Find out about the Anglo-Saxons through real
and replica objects, crafts and clothing. Take a
staff led tour of the amazing artefacts, dress
like a Saxon, discover objects in the Big Dig
room and learn about grave goods as evidence.

DINOSAURS
Jurassic Sea - KS1 pupils
Learn about the Jurassic era through looking at
fossils and view our amazing plesiosaur
skeleton. Includes a craft activity, big dig and
staff-led tour
Places
Shape and Form
Investigate how artists have represented places
in paintings and explore these through your
imagination. The gallery tour will provide an
opportunity to investigate ideas, methods and
approaches - including creating a soundscape!
Choose to make a peephole landscape, a mixed
media weave, press print or paint a landscape.
Investigate our large collection of ornate Derby
porcelain and pots by Turner Prize winner
Grayson Perry. Learn about the function,
aesthetics and methods of making shapes and
forms. Design and make a container from
recycled materials or clay. Key Stage two
students can also explore making
three-dimensional models inspired by our
clock collection.
Pattern and Line
Through personal engagement and discovery
learn what a pattern is, develop drawing and
design skills and increase your knowledge of
shape and symmetry. Design and decorate a
plate or create a pattern before printing it onto
paper or fabric.
Colour
Develop an understanding of colour, techniques
and textiles with an exciting gallery tour at the
start of the session. A specific focus will be
placed on exploring colour in seasons and the
impressionist style employed by Tom Warrener.
Create either, a large group abstract mural, an
abstract felted square, individual collage or an
impressionist landscape.
Sculpture
Investigate a variety of materials and methods
used in sculpture. Handle sculptures, exploring
their shape, form and tactile qualities and
develop ideas and creative responses to
larger sculptures through observation and
discussion. Create either a clay head or a mixed
media sculpture.
People and Portraits
Learn about portraits and self portraits through
studying composition, expression and costume.
Pupils will be encouraged to draw on their own
experiences and thoughts to develop ideas
and understanding. Create a life sized paper
collage portrait, print, painting or small
individual collage.
