As modern India’s National Channel, Doordarshan holds a unique collection of archival material on India’s
exquisite and classic performing arts that have survived, without ‘formal documentation’, as understood by the
transcribing tradition of western societies.
Today, Doordarshan Channels – DD-National, DD-Bharati, DD-News, DD-Sports, DD-India, DD-Urdu and
regional channels – substantially cover and present the millennia-old heritage of India.
Many genres of music, dance and theatre in India, now termed ‘classical’, have flourished along with folk forms
in contemporary milieu, in a fascinating blend of continuity and evolution, for over 2,500 years.
Doordarshan celebrated the centenary of recorded music in India (1902-2002) with its first set of seven VCDs
and ACDs in January 2003.
Now, there are 156 titles available and many more are in the offing – the cherished performance-highs of a great
nation with a hoary heritage.
Doordarshan Archives has taken up the task of digitization of all its content, collected and preserved in its libraries
across the country. It is a fabulous visual history of the last five decades, as the Public Service Broadcaster has left
almost no aspect of life in the country untouched.
This Media Asset, a great treasure, is being converted into virtual archives through a high-end Media Asset
Management (MAM) solution which will preserve this treasure for posterity and also ensure its easy retrieval.
Repurposing the content for dissemination on various digital platforms like webcasting, interactive video on
demand, podcasting, DVD customisation etc. offers a new dimension to mainstream media. These initiatives will
be fully supported by Media Asset Management.
The aim is to make these cultural heirlooms user-friendly and accessible to votaries of culture.
Wishing you happy viewing of Doordarshan’s treasure trove.

MS Subbulakshmi (1916-2004) was a Carnatic singer whose
fame spread to North India through the lustre of her soulful
voice and her felicitous choice of devotional songs in several
Indian languages. In the post-Independence confusion about
faith, her voice provided a sanctuary of sound in which
many modern Indians prayed under the cover of listening to
music. Doordarshan’s selection offers rare moments with this
luminous, beloved singer.

The doughty musician from India’s holiest city, Varanasi, would
play his auspicious Shehnai (Indian oboe) each morning at the
gate of Varanasi’s most important temple, Kashi Vishwanath.
Over the decades, he raised the status of the Shehnai from
its limited role as “Mangal Dhwani” (auspicious sound) at
weddings to that of a solo concert instrument. Doordarshan
offers a splendid selection from its archives. The highlight of
this compilation is Raga Puriya Dhanashree which the artiste
played inside Diwan-e-Aam of the Red Fort on 50th anniversary
of Independence in 1997.

In this album, Ustad Amjad Ali Khan plays a freewheeling duet or
jugalbandi with eminent Hindustani violinist Vishnu Govind Jog,
who has played with three generations of classical performers.
The other jugalbandi with Mysore Duraiswamy Iyengar is a rare
and beautiful event in the history of classical music in modern
times: the coming together of two deeply reposeful musicians
whose serenity is never dull, but magnificent, sonorous and full
of joy. The third jugalbandi in this album is more of a “happening”
or “encounter”.

In the Sufi poetry of India, the female note is dominant. The poet
views himself as a woman who yearns for her lover and is so
lost in her love for him that she gives up her own identity and
becomes one with the lover. Generally, a woman waits for the
lover to lift her veil, but in the spiritual realm, the woman herself
lifts her veil to have a glimpse of the lover; Love in Sufism is
exalted to the spiritual realm.

The Dance of the Enchantress’ – this genre was invented in
medieval times for the pleasure of courtly male connoisseurs
of Kathakali. The legendary poet of the Malabar, Vallathol, was
pioneer in rescuing this art from dereliction. This slow, seductive
form is usually danced to languorous tunes taken from the old
Kerala tradition of Sopana Sangeetam with charming lyrics.

DVD-Rs.395/-
From its earlier form of missionary group tradition, Kuchipudi
has evolved into a highly entertaining and technically complex,
sophisticated and stylised solo dance form, which enjoys
the added artistic advantage of a large space for histrionic
improvisations. In its journey from dance-drama to solo format,
Kuchipudi dance has altered the course, from being addressed
to a largely rural audience, to a mainly urban one.
The ancient temple-dance art of South India was offered in
devotional ritual as a part of worship. It mapped the human
heart through exploring the dynamics of vipralambha (separation
from) and sambhoga (union) with the Divine. Falling into colonial
disgrace under the British, the dance was revived in the 20th
century and it has flowered into neo-classical splendour through
generations of contemporary Indian dancers.

Bharatanatyam, along with all other art forms, shares the
common aesthetic aim of evoking aesthetic joy or ‘rasa’ in the
viewer. Also shared is a spiritual aim where all art forms become
disciplines in aid of self-realisation and in experiencing a higher
level of consciousness. Spirituality and dance become soulmates, with devotional themes becoming a part of dance.

Evolution of Hindustani classical music has had a deep impact
on the form of Kathak as we see it today. Inspired by the gentle
blossoming of the raga in Khayal singing, the Kathak dancer
develops the poetry of the tala in pure dance or nritta. The
creative senses are gently awakened by the orbit of the tala,
played as a musical refrain on the Sarangi. The dancing body
responds with delicate micro-movements of the eyes, the
eyebrows, the wrist, the torso and finally the entire being.
The exciting blend of the folk tradition of dance-drama in the
‘Krishna Belt’ of Brijbhumi in North India with the court dancing
favoured by later Muslim rulers, Kathak (literally the dance of
the storyteller) is renowned for its rhythmic virtuosity.

Dance Drama
Nauka Charitam
DVD-Rs.395/- & VCD-Rs.295/A set of two VCDs/DVDs of dance dramas based on devotional
music from the medieval Bhakti era.
This is the most popular of Thyagaraja’s operas as the story
is of captivating interest. The Nauka Charitam is a creation of
the composer’s own imagination. The opera is full of delightful
music and beautiful poetry. Krishna has been depicted as a boy
of about seven years.
In Nauka Charitam, Thyagaraja displays considerable poetic
gifts which include mastery over Telugu idiom and grandeur of
his poetic conception. The esoteric significance of the story lies
in the unqualified surrender or abandon of the devotee to the
Lord in his hour of trial. This is based on Bharatanatyam style.
Choreographed by Radha
Tum Chandan Hum Pani
DVD-Rs.395/-, VCD-Rs.295/- & ACD-Rs.195/Born in the village of Mandur near Varanasi, Ravidas imbibed
the spirit of devotion to God from his parents as well as the
holy precincts of Varanasi. The subtle influences, he absorbed
in this atmosphere, constituted his education. When he was 18,
he became devoted to Lord Rama. Initially, Ravidas could not
keep his attention on his profession of shoemaking. Whatever
he earned, he would spend in the service of ascetics and those
whose life was consecrated to God.
For Ravidas, one’s work is the path to God - realisation.
“Honest work is my religion. It will always enable me to cross
the ocean of the world”, he sings. Some events from his life
have been choreographed as a dance drama presentation. This
is based on Kathak style.

Dance Appreciation Series
Bharatanjali
DVD-Rs.395/Presented by Sudharani Raghupati
EPISODES 1&2
Dancer and teacher, Sudharani Raghupathy, begins her story
of Bharatanatyam with a quotation from the Natyasastra
“Dharmyam yashasyam ayushyam….”
The Guru with the Tattukazhi (wooden plank and stick with
which he strikes to mark rhythm) conducts classes. Sudharani
explains how the young child begins his/her initiation with a
long cloth tied tight and snug round the waist. This is a must to
ensure a proper posture and straight back as any stooping or
awkward bending down will create discomfort with the waist
tied secure.
Sudharani mentions Koottanool by Saattanaar, assigned
approximately to the 14th century Muktavali by Mahabharata,
Choodamani and Sangeeta Saramrita as the old treatises that
give details about Bharatanatyam.
EPISODES 3&4
Continuing with the demonstration and explanations for the
‘Margam’ or concert format prescribed in Bharatanatyam,
about 200 years ago by the Tanjore Quartette-Chinnayya,
Ponnaiyya, Sivanandam and Vadivelu, who were the court
nattuvanars during the reign of Sarfoji and Swati Tirunal,
Sudharani Raghupathy points out that while the sequence and
designing of the format was by the four brothers, the items had
been in existence much earlier.
Smita Magul Karpur demonstrates eye and head movements
and Priya Mahadevan, the hand gestures, both single and
double, with Sudha demonstrating the gestures that denote
various ideas and images.
EPISODES 5&6
Sudharani Raghupathy, in this episode, focuses on the abhinaya
or communicative aspect of the dance form .
Kshetrayya, Muttutandavar, Ghanam Krishnaiyyer, and several
composers have composed Padams and Javalis and Sudharani
Raghupathy sings snatches of different Padams and Javalis in
different moods with a glimpse of its interpretation.
The episode features Kamalambal, perhaps the last known
devadasi attached to the Tanjore Brihadeeshwara Temple who
interprets a song through expressions, in the seated position.
EPISODES 7&8
Sudharani Raghupathy goes to the theme of the Karana without
which no discussion on classical dance can be complete. She uses
the services of colleague Padma Subrahmanyam, an authority
on the Karana, to deal with this subject. The fourth chapter of
the Natyasastra, the earliest encyclopaedic treatise on Natya,
deals solely with the Karana which, as Sudharani introduces,
is profusely illustrated in sculptured temple panels, freezing in
stone one moment of a movement.
There are some highly acrobatic Karanas, a demonstration
of which is given by dancer Swarnamukhi, who has mastered
these difficult Karanas, like Lalata-tilakam, Vrischikam, VidyutBhrantam, Bhujanga-trasitam etc. from her teacher, Sri Sampati
Bhoopati. Taken from the Balarama-Bharatam, these Karanas
are used decoratively and meaningfully. As Padma maintains, she
would define the Karana as “Atmakaya samayogaha, Nrityahasta
Karanam Bhavet.,” I.e., combining the inner and the outer
dancer.
Sudharani draws attention to the figure of Nataraja, the God
of Dance, who as teacher (Dakshinamoorthi), mendicant
(Bhikshatanar), one striking awesome terror (Bhairavar)
combines many roles, and integrated in him, are all the polarities
of life. He also incorporates within him the Energy of the ‘Five
Elements’, symbolizing the Universe in rhythm. And what better
example of this rhythmic ecstasy can Bharatanatyam have,
than its abstraction in the joyous Tillana where the rhythmic
syllable transcending the musical word and note, spell ‘Ananda’
or ecstasy. Describing various aspects of the Tillana, Sudharani
concludes by presenting Chitra Viswesvaran, rendering a Tillana
in the ragam Revati, a composition of Madurai N. Krishnan.
Chitra has her husband Visweswaran and Madurai Sethuraman,
providing vocal support.

Natyasastra, as the scene opens to a view of the majestic
Himalayas , the Sahasradhara and the backwaters of Kerala,
with the flute music playing Raga Pahadi.
Episode 2
Angikaabhinaya : Anga, Sthaana & Adavu
30
Episode 7
Angahaaras and Pindi
The vocabulary of percussion syllables or mnemonics for these
Angahaaras–Sthirahastakam, Pariyastakam and Sucividham,
sound quite different from what one finds in the Desi
traditions.
Episode 8
Abhinaya : Padartha, Vakyartha, Vacika, Mukhaja &
Aharya
Padma centres on the visual interpretation of literature, which
provides thematic fodder for dance, based on a word by word
expression, as ‘padaartha abhinaya’ or reflecting the essence of
a whole sentence as ‘vaakyaartha abhinaya’.
Episode 9
Aharya & Satvika Abhinaya, Dharmi
Padma, in this episode, further substantiates how art traditions
in India, selectively emulate the Margi principles, spelt out in
this text, even while preserving regional identities.
Episode 3
Angikabhinaya : Saka, Cari & Nrtta Karana
Padma reveals her intense faith in indigenous sources like the
Puranas, an information treasure unfortunately treated as myth,
providing premises for reconstructing India’s “history, history
of geography and history of ethnology”.
Episode 10
Bhava and Rasa
Dr Padma Subramaniam continues on this fascinating journey of
the Natyasastra’s in-depth concern with the body as a means
of communication.
Episode 4
Angikabhinaya Ntrrakarana
The mind/body togetherness which the Natyashastra embodies
is best experienced in its theory of rasa, the central motif for all
Indian classical art.
Episode 11
Vrtti & Pravrtti
All along Padma Subramaniam through cross references,
stresses on the Natyasastra’s enormous unifying influence,
its application, cutting across different art disciplines while
integrating various regions of India and even South-east Asia.
Episode 5
Angikabhinaya Nrttakarana
The beauty of the Natyashastra’s inclusiveness, as Padma
explains to students, lies in its respect for, and acceptance of,
stylistic differences pertaining to thought, word and action called
vrittis, which act as counterpoints in a polyphonic oneness.
Episode 12
Dasa Rupa
Padma Subramaniam has shown us how these separated
movements can be integrated in an entire unit of movement
involving the whole body divided into the angas.
Episode 6
Nrttakarana Saushtava, Recaka & Satva
Bharata identifies “Dasarupas” or ten forms of presentation,
containing all or chosen vrittis and rasas in varying combinations.
Embodying all vrittis and rasas, the topmost category is Nataka
concluding on a wondrous note, based on the epics and
Puranas.
Revealing awareness of the gap between theory and practice,
Bharata’s Natyasastra provided space for individual creativity.

Natyopasana
DVD-Rs.695/Presented by Leela Venkataraman
Indian performing arts have a strong spiritual base. Smt. S.
Sarada of Kalakshestra explores this important aspect of
Bharatanatyam in this 13-episode series. Each aspect has been
extensively illustrated through appropriate dance segments.
Episode 1
The single great motif in art of all times, embodying the
philosophy of truth, goodness and beauty is the dancing
Nataraja, a metaphor for eternal cosmic movement, the
Universe being the theatre for the dance, with the sun and the
moon serving asNataraja’s ornaments.
Episode 2
In this episode focused on how movement geometry, mnemonic
syllables, rhythm and music, are all engaged in a spiritual quest
for the ultimate state of Being.
Episode 3
In this episode, Sarada pinpoints thematic concerns of dance
with a discussion on the Ashta Nayikas or eight situations of a
heroine in love, a common theme in all Indian classical arts.
Episode 4
S.Sarada in this episode, highlights the Abhisarika - the nayika
who secretly sets off on her own for a tryst with the beloved.
This situation involves both nayika and nayaka, who embark,
under the cover of darkness generally.
Episode 5
S. Sarada, explains, how in the Padam “Valaro mova Gopala
minnu dalachi” the sakhi admonishes the Nayika for being so
small and walking away from the Lord without recognising that
his all -pervading consciousness feels all her joys and pain.
Episode 6
The episode on rasa is linked to pure metaphysics. S. Sarada
begins by explaining the recited hymn from the Taitireeya
Upanishad describing the limitless nature of Nirguna Brahman
or pure spirit . This episode explores sringar, hasya and veera
rasas.
Episode 7
The story of aesthetic joy and fulfilment continues with ‘adbhuta’
rasa or the state of wonderment, raudra rasa and karuna or
compassion. Themes are drawn from the scriptures and myths.
Episode 8
In the final episode dealing with rasa(s), Sarada gives viewers
a peep into other three moods, starting with the mood of
‘bibhatsam’ or that which evokes the response of disgust to
something found odious. This continues with bhayanakam or
fear and ends with shantam or tranquility.
Episode 9
S.Sarada explains how each finger symbolises specific cosmic
element and energyes. The thumb representing the Earth is
related to our physical body or Annamaya Kosha, controlling the
force of enlightenment and subtle forces of our life principle.
Episode 10
S. Sarada’s informative lessons on the gestural vocabulary of
Bharatanatyam opens one’s eyes to the integrated nature of this
classical art form and several other disciplines.
Episode 11
S.Sarada now shifts the focus on to certain deities, frequently
treated in dance themes. The elephant-headed Ganesha, the
remover of obstacles, is always evoked at the start of the recital,
auguring an auspicious beginning.
Episode 12
In this episode, Sarada discusses different categories of Daruvus
and their usage, with demonstrations providing us examples
from Kalakshetra productions.
Episode 13
S. Sarada, now focuses on aspects which pertain to preperformance preparations.

This series is the first major work which connects the tradition
of painting in India from the time of Ajanta to the present day.
The films show many sites of painting which have never been
clearly photographed before.
Governments of many countries have very kindly co-operated
to make this comprehensive project possible. Museums around
the world and state governments and museums in India have
co-operated immensely for the widespread shooting of these
films.
Many concepts in the development of Indian painting have
been altered by the massive and first-of-its-kind coverage of
this project.

‘Mind Watch’ is a 26-part documentary focusing on emotional
and psychological issues that underlie mental
health and mental illnesses. It was produced by
Doordarshan and telecast first in 1995 on DD
National (potential reach 250 million viewers,
at that time) and, subsequently retelecast
several times on other channels of Doordarshan
like DD-Metro, DD-Bharati, DD-International.
Originally in English, it was later dubbed in Hindi
and seven other regional languages. The series
is one of the most frequent and longest run, in
the a history of television that is exclusively dedicated to Mental
Health and Well-being.
India has been called ‘The Golden Sparrow’ (denoting
prosperity) and ‘Land of Spirituality’ (denoting wisdom of
our traditions), embodying how materialism and spirituality
can co-exist. We have given some of the most ancient texts
to the world. India has also had the good fortune of being
the birth place of many religions, religious leaders, spiritual
traditions and value systems. We have had robust community
support; joint family; family ties; value systems like respect
for elders, teachers and environment heritage of meditative/
yogic life styles and wisdom of folklore and scriptures to deal
with internal strife and external stress. These have also helped
generations over a period of time to cope with problems of
living and maintain ‘Mental Well-being’. Yet, sometimes, what
one has in abundance, is taken for granted.
