Margaret River Caving—caves, beaches and forests
Tim Moulds – [email protected]
The Margaret River region is about a three hour drive south of Perth,
Western Australia, and contains a wonderful mix of world-class caves,
forest, wineries and beaches. The caves are syngenetic in nature, being
formed at the water table during the lithification process of calcareous
dunes, and are young (<500,000 years). The caves are mostly horizontal
in nature and generally can be completed within a few hours, so most
likely we will visit several caves each day depending upon individual
trip leaders and participants. There is excellent opportunity for
photography in many of the caves, and also above-ground.
The caves are dry and you will not get wet underground. It may be cold
and raining on the surface, and we will be walking off tracks through
sometimes thick undergrowth to access caves, so it is possible that you
may get very wet above ground. Bring a rain jacket.
