“La Festa Della Befana”
Sunday, Jan 7 at 1:30
January arrives with the New year and as tradition has it, La Befana passes like Santa
Claus (Babbo Natale) over the rooftops and drops presents to all the good children
(bambini buoni). In Italy on January 5th, children go to sleep hoping that the kindly old
lady called La Befana will visit them during the night and leave presents for the children who have been good. One of Italy’s oldest and most renowned legends, La Befana
is honored with special events throughout Italy. The Town of Urbania in the Marches
holds the largest festival, La Festa Nazionale della Befana. Over four days, ending on
the Epiphany, the mythical woman is celebrated with music, markets and shows. In
Sacramento, California and other cities across the Unites States with Italian communities, the Legend of La Befana is celebrated with an annual Children’s Festival. This
years festival in Sacramento features folk dancing by the Italian Cultural Society’s children’s dance troupe
The Bambini Dancers and the Society’s teen dance troupe La Danza Italiana. Also featured is a puppet show, crafts,
children’s books and Befana T-shirts, special Italian Christmas cookies and cakes, and a special visit by the Befana herself and
gifts for all the kids who attend. Donations of traditional Italian biscotti are needed as well as volunteers for the
crafts tables, the kitchen and the book and T-shirt tables. Call Jennifer Caruso at (916) 690-5634 to help out.
Meet The Author: “Welcome To Nicktown”
Sunday, Jan 14 at 2:30 pm
at the Italian Cultural Center – Rm 13
2791 – 24th St. (24th St. & 4th Ave)
Author and musician Annamaria Arcangeli of Rimini, Italy is coming to Sacramento to speak

- granddaughter Annamaria travels to Pennsylvania in search of her family’s American side,
her own identity and some lost place called Nicktown. The story touches the collective and
scorching theme of the Italian emigration to the United States. The book is bilingual in
English and Italian and will be available at the book signing. Free.

... “I’ve just returned from a three week trip in Italy. Thanks to all of your excellent teaching and valuable tips our trip was a complete success. We felt comfortable
in bars, restaurants, and train stations knowing how the systems work. We enjoyed
meeting the Italian people and talking with them in their own language. That really
opened doors for us! Train conductors thanked us for learning Italian cheering us on
with “brava!” Wine shop owners eagerly took us to their private cellars and shared
stories of their grandparents while showing us their ancient barrels, bottle storage
carved into tufa walls and opened their special vin Santo and grappa. This was my
first trip abroad and it was so much fun. Our whole experience was deeper and richer
because of what I learned from you. Thank you for all the education and passion for
Italy that you shared with me.”

The Italian Center Fund
Making A Difference
Each of us is presented with an opportunity to make a difference
in the future of our community by making a gift to the Italian Center Fund. It is not very often that we as individuals are presented
with such an opportunity to support a major initiative by our community and change the outcome for future generations. If you ever
wanted a chance to make a difference, to be part of something Italian, this is it.
We plan to open the new Italian Center in the Spring. In order to complete the Center, we have taken out a
construction loan. When the Italian Center is completed, we will be left with a mortgage to pay off. The size of
the mortgage will depend upon how much we are able to raise between now and then. In other words, it will
depend on how much you care about our heritage, about us, about our future. The smaller the mortgage, the
better we will be able to operate the Center and develop the social, educational and cultural programs that
are the life of our community. The new Italian Center is our lifeline to the future. We urge all of you to make
a generous donation.
