dad, Les, laid the foundation for the company in 1956 and now Steve, the current
Chief Executive Officer (CEO), is building on it by championing the Cruickshank
brand and providing strategic direction and vision with a focus on driving
corporate growth.

Steve began working for his family’s company at the age of fourteen in
Cruickshank’s equipment repair shop. He went on to become an equipment
operator at the company for several years before obtaining a Civil Engineering
degree from Queen’s University and a Master of Business Administration degree
from the University of Western Ontario. In the summers between school and after
graduation, Steve acquired on-the-ground experience, including work in Alberta’s
construction industry, before returning to the Cruickshank family business in
1984. In 2000, Steve took over as Cruickshank’s CEO, and since then the
company, now over 500 employees strong, has continued to grow, with new
operations in Ontario, Alberta and the United States. Under Steve’s leadership,
Cruickshank has also ranked as one of the 50 Best Small & Medium Employers in
Canada for the past three consecutive years, been named one of Canada’s most
environmentally-conscious companies by Maclean’s magazine for the past two
years in a row (The Green 30), and become a 2011 winner of Canada’s 50 Best
Managed Companies program sponsored by Deloitte, CIBC, National Post and
Queen’s School of Business.
In 2007, Steve was chosen as the Salute to Kingston and Area Businessmen Cover
Profile Award winner. He is a current board member of the Canadian Construction
Association and past President of both the Ontario Road Builders Association and
the Ontario Hot Mix Producers Association.
